Wests Tigers urge contract reform after Aloiai's shock release request

Wests Tigers chairman Lee Hagipentalis will urge the NRL to create rules that stop players breaking contracts to cash in at rival clubs after prop Josh Aloiai stunned the joint-venture with a release request and scathing assessment.

Aloiai's manager Tyran Smith has asked for an immediate release after Manly are understood to have tabled a two-year deal believed to be significantly more lucrative than the extension offered by the Tigers recently.

The news stunned Tigers officials given Aloiai's vocal support for Michael Maguire in recent years and his professed commitment to turning the club around.

**But when negotiations around a two-year Tigers extension stalled, Aloiai's intentions were made clear in a text to a senior Tigers official that read: "I have no desire to represent the Wests Tigers organisation or put a Wests Tigers jersey on again".**

Privately the Tigers believe Aloiai's release request stems from the Sea Eagles' own two-year contract for 2022-23 being contingent on him joining the club next season.

Manly CEO Stephen Humphries denied any contingency exists.

NRL.com understands though that the club has salary cap space to accommodate Aloiai if he exits Concord early.

"We have a high regard for Josh, he's a fine player and a leader but he is contracted for 2021," Humphries told NRL.com.

"We're interested in attracting him to our club, but all our discussions have been for 2022 and beyond. 2021 has not been mentioned in our conversations."

I have no doubt Humphries is lying.

The Wests Tigers have warned Josh Aloiai he will be “mowing grass at Leichhardt or Campbelltown” if he fails to fulfil hisplaying commitments as the prop agitates for a move to Manly.

Hagipantelis said a breakdown in contract negotiations between Aloiai and the Wests Tigers has led to the 25-year-old asking for an immediate release to join Manly.

Tigers chairman Lee Hagipantelis said there was no chance the club would entertain letting one of their best players go a year early.

“He is either a Wests Tiger or he is mowing the lawns at Leichhardt or Campbelltown or painting the change rooms at Concord — as long as he fulfils his contract,” Hagipantelis said.

“Anecdotally we are told he has come to an agreement with Manly for 2022 and 2023. I was informed that the ‘22 and ‘23 deal may be contingent on a release for 2021.

“There will be no release of Josh from his 2021 contract unless the club agrees to an advantageous outcome. We had entertained negotiations with Josh so one can assume (he has a more financially rewarding offer elsewhere).

“Perplexing and disappointing that a failed contract negotiation would be met for a release with a level of disrespect to the current employer.”

Hagipantelis said the Tigers had been used as a doormat for too long.

“There will be no release of Josh from his 2021 contract unless the club agrees to an advantageous outcome.”

“The days of players or others thinking they can use the Wests Tigers as a stepping stone are over,” Hagipantelis said. “You don’t come here to bide your time. You fulfil your contract and then you are free to do as you wish.

“There is a perception the Wests Tigers could be bullied but now it’s time for perception to meet reality – we will not be bullied by anyone.”

“The chairman, coaching staff players or ground staff – if we commit to the Wests Tigers then we fulfil that contract.”

The Sea Eagles have identified Aloiai as a replacement for Addin Fonua-Blake.

Manly boss Stephen Humphreys denied any deal had been struck.

“We rate Josh very highly both as a player and a leader,” Humphreys said. “He’s contracted to the Wests Tigers for 2021. We are very interested in attracting him to the Sea Eagles from the 2022 season. We’ve had some discussions with him and his manager about that. We remain hopeful.”

The Tigers and Aloiai’s management will meet on Wednesday. The Aloiai news follows that of Josh Addo-Carr’s decision to remain in Melbourne and is similar to the exit of Ryan Matterson from the Tigers last year after just one season.

Hagipantelis will meet with the NRL next week to campaign for restrictions on what players can earn should they break their contracts. ARL chairman Peter V’landys has floated the concept that players cannot earn more than their current deal if they exit it early and Hagipantelis wants the idea explored further.

“It’s a line in the sand across the game,” Hagipantelis said. “We are aware of numerous instances where players have asked for an early release. It shouldn’t be happening.

“If you seek a release from a club on compassionate grounds then you should not gain a commercial advantage.”

Wests Tigers are set to secure the signature of one rising forward as Aloiai agitates for a release from the club.

Alex Seyfarth, who is currently a free agent, is close to signing an one-year extension at Concord after making his NRL debut this season.

Seyfarth, an under 18s and under 20s NSW Blues backrower, is about to secure his immediate future at the Tigers.

Forward Luke Garner has two more years left on his deal at the Tigers but it’s believed the club have explored the option of moving him on.

Like Aloiai, Garner could end up at Narrabeen after the Sea Eagles inquired about his services.

The other very expensive piece of the Tigers forward pack puzzle in 2021 is Russell Packer, who has one more year remaining on his deal believed to worth around $750,000. The Tigers have attempted to offload Packer to a rival but have no takers for his services.

Rising backrower, Sam McIntyre, who made his NRL debut in 2020 for the Tigers and played 12 games, has joined the Gold Coast Titans on a one-year deal.

The Tigers might have missed out on Josh Addo-Carr but could welcome Penrith young gun Daine Laurie, who is close to agreeing to terms, as soon as this summer.

The Tigers want Daine Laurie to join the club for season 2021.

Laurie was set to sign a two year deal from season 2022 but the Tigers are in talks with Penrith about the possibility of an early release for the outside back.

Hold the player to the contract no matter the salary cap implication or possible trade. We have to stop it from happening next one will try it Cleary set the tone and Matterson set the example. It will continue to happen if you buckle. If the player won’t wear the jersey he will forfeit payment and be on the sidelines for the year.

Wow! Remember how Stephen Humphries ran this club a decade ago? Seems like he can't stop stinking up this club.

There's a piece missing here. The SMH article said his agent said 'he's improved so much under madge and he likes it' and then suddenly this. Something has gone on behind the scenes cause saying you are 'never going to wear the jersey again' is a pretty big claim.

Or the agent is full of it....shocking to think of but its possible.

Where is @tiga4eva when you need him (or her)? I'd like an authoritative update on what led Josh to (allegedly) make his comments today? Perhaps just summarise his/her last 6 or so chats with him today will be sufficient. No need for grandstanding now.

Well apparently he will meet you behind the grandstand and "show you the documents".

Headline says “Tigers secure one star as another seeks to leave”. Behind the paywall.

Found it. It’s Seyfarth they’re talking about

Media really need to stop using the term "star" for every player in the game.

One game and you’re an ‘NRL star’ lol

Desperate times in news media - stars get more clicks

TBH I'm quite happy with the way this is being handled. If they continue this hardstance, next guy that wants out early or starts flapping his mouth about us might think twice. Starts to (And i say this gingerly) SLOWLY win back more respect to the club, depending on if we stay this route. And yea we are going to have an almost complete new side next year and especially 22, but I'm still excited to see what they can do.

We must stay strong with Aloiai over this, and I don't care if he doesn't wear the Wests Tigers jersey ever again.
Our CC team wears Western Suburbs colours, so go and introduce yourself to Wayne Collins.

This is on par with the Dons being cheated,it has really brought out our frustration in being put down by players and showing no respect for our colours, hope most of this doesnt come from josh but his agent who needs to be investigated ovef his actions

It's sort of funny how we are screaming for Aloiai to honour his 2021 contract and rightly so with the right hand while secretly fist pumping the air should Laurie be able to obtain a release and join us for 2021 with the left..
