Australian basketball star Andrew Bogut has unloaded on the NRL's "disappointing" proposed changes to grassroots football, saying losing provides important life lessons.

Bogut was one of several professional athletes left baffled after the NRL released a proposed series of radical changes to overhaul rugby league at the junior level in Australia. Speaking to Wide World of Sports Radio, Bogut explained how learning how to win and lose respectfully allows children to navigate inevitable setbacks that may come later in life.

"It's disappointing," Bogut said. Bogut has experienced both the highs and the lows throughout his NBA career (AAP) "I think some people say it's mainly aimed towards the parents, but the kids are the ones that are going to suffer."

Bogut has been an outspoken critic of both the AFL and NRL's proposed changes at the junior level, particularly the AFL's 'scoring ban' for juniors below the age of 12, and explained the lessons that can be taken out of both wins and losses. "There's a beauty in winning and there's a beauty in losing," he said. "In losing, (you learn) the harsh reality of what you need to improve on instantly and winning can also get people comfortable to where they don't win again.

"So there's a lot of life lessons within sport. There's life lessons whether you win by 50 or lose by 50, but to say that it affects your confidence and what not, I don't believe that."

Fully agree there are to many do gooders these day trying to tell us whats good for us,mind your business life these days is hard enough the only way to prepare kids for later in life is to prepare them for winning and losing in their early years is it any wonder that kids are turning to drugs and alcohol these days let kids be kids.

I agree with what he is saying totally ......but maybe Andrew needs to learn about the beauty of losing after the way he carried on like a pork chop after the last World Championship game loss

I think that the current systems in the sports of soccer, league and union that my young son has played in over the past few seasons, worked much better than those in place when I played in growing up, then later coached and trained. The field sizes and player numbers are much more appropriate for a start.

I also like the general lack of specialised position aspect and if my son decides to play union again this season for instance as an under 10, they will step up to field size with eleven players playing in position and competing for points for the first time. If he decides to play league, it will be similar and appropriate for their development. The kids generally still know how things have panned out, but personally I have never kept a tally when involved over these past few years, as I truly believe it is much more important for them to play, than compete.

The more important change for mine in junior league, would be for the scoring team to kick off, like it was in that otherwise crap Super League competition, as it shares the possession a bit better in unbalanced matches.

I first became aware of the proposed changes when discussing my sons progress with his teacher around 20 years ago. With discussion moving to sport and his desire to win . I thought it was essential to have this desire to win but the teacher disagreed. She said they didn’t keep score for that reason. I found it a real battle of wits with the teachers. The kids would tank in an 80mt sprint on the weekend because they were losing their desire to compete. But dad why do we have to run fast if we have no chance of winning? They asked.

Nothing annoys me more than people complaining about the youngsters eating McDonald's, getting picked up at school in 4wd's and drinking out of plastic bottles etcetera, as this is the world they were brought up in and had nothing to do with creating.

The generations (including me a young me) that used to have one small rubbish bin and bottles of delivered milk made this exploding capitalistic corporatist world of waste and pollution, yet many of them [This word has been automatically removed] and moan about our youngsters being concerned about their future on a planet that overwhelming scientific evidence shows is struggling at an increasing rate.

Yet in some countries and particularly the US, there is a massive opioid addiction problem that has been pushed legally by profit driven pharmaceutical companies and dispensers, to the great detriment of the local communities across the nation and particularly the white populations of the north.

The main difference between other opium derivative abuse and dealing, is the demographic and policing of it.

There are plenty of opportunities for our kids to win their medals in their individual events, such as my son winning his beach sprint events at Nippers and he gets medals for that at carnivals, but when young as part of a team sport, I want him to be part of that collective and in footy encouraged him to wait for a teammate if he can give him or her a try assist whenever possible, rather than going for the glory that his natural pace allows. He gets more out of helping them than just planting the ball down himself and so do they, so he now waits at every opportunity.

Really though it doesn't seem to bother the kids that much ..it's more the parents up in arms ....the only thing I would say is my sons side dominated in the non finals years ....now when it counts ...diddly squat
