Can anyone explain what a mutual option is? In the third year I suppose we offer market value if we want to keep Api? And Api has the right to decline? I just don’t understand why it’s referred to as a 3 year deal?

A mutual option is an optional year at the end of a contract. In order for the optional year to become guaranteed, both parties must agree to exercise the option.

If a player enjoys a strong season, the club will often exercise its half of the option in the hope of retaining the player on a one-year deal (same price as the previous year). However, the player may wish to test the open market in search of a larger guarantee on a one-year or a multi-year contract. Likewise, a player whose stock is down might exercise his half of the option rather than test free agency, but the club may no longer view him as worth that salary.

I guess it has some value in that it declares the intentions of both parties that should conditions be favourable then a third year is an option, providing of course both parties agree to terms. I wonder if the option could be contested if say Api has 2 good years , performance wise, and although he wants to exercise his option the club do not? Perhaps that’s where the MO is of value and so be called as a 3 year contract?

didnt he have off field incidents?

Cheated on his Mrs during Origin camp. Hardly a hangable offence

At least you know he'll be available for origin, Freddy has marked his card "never to play origin again". In all seriousness, it's a good signing, he will add dimensions in attack and I've never seen him overplay his hand, mmm well done Mick and Tim.

Simpkln will be gone mate

Don’t think so mate Simpkin is still learning the ropes of anyone will be let go its Liddle the club still sees Simpkin as the next big one and Api was signed to help Simpkin as well as the team I don’t think we’ll lose Simpkin due to signing Api

The club "hopes" Simpkin is the next big thing.

They obviously see something in him to extend him before Liddle we most likely will have Liddle for 22 but after that he’s out

Unless you know something none of us know, Liddle is contracted here to 2023, if the club wants to keep him, they will.

We do know that Api won a grand final under Madge’s coaching.

What I know is he won a comp under Madge cause Isaac Luke was suspended for the Grand Final..

Despite him coming in 2023, this is a brilliant signing. It goes a long way to giving the club some credibility with future signings tbh.
Api is in his prime and just maybe feels a similar vibe happening at the Tigers as he saw at Penrith.
At worst it should see both Liddle and Simpkin lift their games in 2022 as they are both in the firing line.

It's still big game experience, and no doubt helped him at his second tilt at a premiership as well.

Obviously Madge can’t be that bad of coach if he’s prepared to play under him again

Whose to say Madge will still even be here when Api gets here. It’s 50/50 atm

The point was that Madge is the coach at the moment and Api would know he has the strongest chance of being the coach in 2023. No one would even know who the other contenders are.

Api played 14 games for the Rabbitohs in 2014 with 9 wins.
Issac Luke played 18 for 12 wins. Momirovski type luck? Or as Woody Allen says”being there is 80% of success”?

You have a point. But do you expect any player would sign on expecting a coach is going to get the spear and they won’t have to play for them. Not very realistic

My view on this signing …… best outcome from the two available options.
This player is better than anything we have on our roster.
And I disagree about the age issue that some have raised. He’s in my opinion type of player that will still be effective in his mid thirties.
He’s everything you could want from a effective hooker …. Reads the game, great defence, explosive from dummy half, fast and has accurate left right passing ability.
Man I just can’t see what some can be complaining about about this signing. Well done Madge and Sheens recruitment team.
