Why is everyone so hyped? He'll be 30/31 when he plays for us and will happily collect his retirement pay. We will also inevitably lose Simpkin who is a future star and only 20 years old. Can't wait to watch Simpkin kill it for the Dolphins in 3 years while Api (who by all accounts is a poor character) is proving to be another Blair, Tamou, Packer, Mbye

Cornerstone of Panthers going from contenders to the real deal. For years they were going on 5th-8th and lacked the final ingredient to go a step further. A good hooker in my opinion has been the difference maker along with other factors albeit.

2 time GF winner, played Origin this year.

Koro is a winner. Simpkin/Rua will still be early 20s at the conclusion of Koro’s deal.

Grant and Starling are both 23 and still transitioning to full time roles.

Best we can hope for is that Simpkin is fine with playing 20mins per game for the next 3-4 years

He may not get that much, he is still learning his game and as I and multiple posters have said, he is under contract, so it doesn’t really matter?

Simpkin is long term. Not close to being ready for the demands of DH in FG. Api K is the perfect signing to transition him through.

Some people need a reality check
The fact we argue over who is better Liddle/Simpkin shows how important Api signing is.

Liddle is NRL standard but not for 80mins
Simpkin you can clearly see can become an NRL player but needs a few good years before it happens.

Everyone complained about ball service and poor decisions and not playing 80mins let alone 60mins - Api solves that.

If we didn’t sign Api then we are stuck with potential one day players which will never happen and is the normal WTs narrative.

Api for 2yrs gives us that quality which is a clear step up but also will switch out as one of the other 2 becomes ready. It gives Simpkin who is clearly the Tigers future time to get ready and someone who knows how to win to show him how game in game out.

Liddle I really like and will have a future in the game but he needs support. Simpkin is just younger and more rounded player - he doesn’t have the speed & game breaker player but offers more robust structure to a style Madge wants us to play.

I'm not sold on Simpkin yet. To me Liddle looks the better player now. It's not a huge difference but Simpkin's hog plays are something that could stop him progressing to anywhere near his potential.

We need a quality hooker and Api provides that. I think you still need 2 hookers but now we should get close to 80 quality minutes from our dummy half. I don't know what we do next year though.

Having a player signed to another club a year in advance is the biggest concern. Api is a dual premier ship winner doesn't need to achieve much more other than setting himself up financially - which he has done with this contract. Liddle and Simpkin on the other hand both still have years ahead of them in the game. They both lift this year and Api has an indifferent year then the signing creates dilemma.

Can anyone explain what a mutual option is? In the third year I suppose we offer market value if we want to keep Api? And Api has the right to decline? I just don’t understand why it’s referred to as a 3 year deal?

Besides Simpkin we have another couple of outstanding young 9s coming through the junior grades. Great to see we have one position covered for the foreseeable future for a change.

Totally agree! I think Rua will be a champ and jump both Liddle and Simpkin. If so we are in a great position in terms of Hookers in the next few years. Will be competing with Stilletto’s!

A mutual option is an optional year at the end of a contract. In order for the optional year to become guaranteed, both parties must agree to exercise the option.

If a player enjoys a strong season, the club will often exercise its half of the option in the hope of retaining the player on a one-year deal (same price as the previous year). However, the player may wish to test the open market in search of a larger guarantee on a one-year or a multi-year contract. Likewise, a player whose stock is down might exercise his half of the option rather than test free agency, but the club may no longer view him as worth that salary.

I guess it has some value in that it declares the intentions of both parties that should conditions be favourable then a third year is an option, providing of course both parties agree to terms. I wonder if the option could be contested if say Api has 2 good years , performance wise, and although he wants to exercise his option the club do not? Perhaps that’s where the MO is of value and so be called as a 3 year contract?

didnt he have off field incidents?

Cheated on his Mrs during Origin camp. Hardly a hangable offence

At least you know he'll be available for origin, Freddy has marked his card "never to play origin again". In all seriousness, it's a good signing, he will add dimensions in attack and I've never seen him overplay his hand, mmm well done Mick and Tim.

Simpkln will be gone mate

Don’t think so mate Simpkin is still learning the ropes of anyone will be let go its Liddle the club still sees Simpkin as the next big one and Api was signed to help Simpkin as well as the team I don’t think we’ll lose Simpkin due to signing Api

The club "hopes" Simpkin is the next big thing.

They obviously see something in him to extend him before Liddle we most likely will have Liddle for 22 but after that he’s out

Unless you know something none of us know, Liddle is contracted here to 2023, if the club wants to keep him, they will.
