Im sure we prob would like Api for 2022. However i wonder how much we push it. We have plenty of cap room for 22 but if you sace some of that and front load extensions for Stefano and Laurie for example or even Brooks then if you think that 2023 onwards will be berter years you can fit more in moving forward. One thing the Roosters dont get enough credit for is every 4 or 5 yrs they have a average year where they let good players go and then dont replace them until the year after and use it to frontload contracts. Even 2022 for them they will lose Cordner, Friend, Morris, etc but will bring in players like Smith for 2023 allowing them to frontload in 2022

Exactly.

If we get Api in 2022, we need to frontload the Contract like anything. I am sure we can Frontload Blore, Stefano, etc a bit.
The other Frontloading name, Noffa. He has a 4 year contract, which was signed in a rush. I believe its 500k so easier to frontload. Yes many want to trade him, sure, even then frontload him now. If we have to subsidize him to have him leave i would rather do that with 2022 money.

Meh, if we get Api in 2022, grab him with both arms. If not, prep for 2023.

Why is everyone so hyped? He'll be 30/31 when he plays for us and will happily collect his retirement pay. We will also inevitably lose Simpkin who is a future star and only 20 years old. Can't wait to watch Simpkin kill it for the Dolphins in 3 years while Api (who by all accounts is a poor character) is proving to be another Blair, Tamou, Packer, Mbye

Cornerstone of Panthers going from contenders to the real deal. For years they were going on 5th-8th and lacked the final ingredient to go a step further. A good hooker in my opinion has been the difference maker along with other factors albeit.

2 time GF winner, played Origin this year.

Koro is a winner. Simpkin/Rua will still be early 20s at the conclusion of Koro’s deal.

Grant and Starling are both 23 and still transitioning to full time roles.

Do you stop and think maybe he has come on board to support Simpkin as he progresses. He’s never been an eighty minute player so have a young player to feed off can benefit him also.

Simpkin is signed till the end of 2024 so I don’t think he’s going anywhere anytime soon.

Best we can hope for is that Simpkin is fine with playing 20mins per game for the next 3-4 years

We have Robbie Farah to support and develop Simpkin. Players leave early all the time, if the club lets him leave I'll be fuming

don't think Api is double vaxed so at present can't play in Melbourne or qld for 2022. Hope this changes in 2023 for us
probably why we are only paying 650k

Which is Exactly why we have a strong chance at keeping either Liddle or Simpkin or even both.

Think 2023, sydney is 90% Vaxed, 94% now. By 2023 most states will be at a similar level. Covid will hopefully be a thing of the past. Api may even change his mind by then.

Yes it will be an issue for international travel, more good news for us.

Yes Robbie and Api.

Api is a NR1 hooker. Robbie, IMHO an awesome hooker, physically tough and great at the role.

Mentorship isnt a once off thing. Api+ Robbie would be the best training ever.

We may loose Liddle. But if I am Simpkin I am thinking I can have occasional game time, maybe Bench hooker + two of the best hookers ever coach me.

650k, Bargain!

Maybe he plays more especially with the use of a hooker as a lock at the back end of halves. Api could be the one who’s playing 20 in 2024 and the club decides not to take up the option in 2025.

Because he brings the main thing we need for all these young players.... Experience
Hooker is one of the main positions in the team and he is the current SOO player so picking him up for 2 years at 650k is a fantastic deal for a Team that has not made the finals for 10 years and has had trouble attracting players.

Yeah perhaps he leapfrogs Api in a couple of years. The question is what do we do with Liddle. Player swap with the Eels?

He plays next year and is free to take up an earlier deal in 2023. Or maybe something in 2022 changes the situation. Let’s see what the season brings

Don’t think so mate Simpkin is still learning the ropes of anyone will be let go its Liddle the club still sees Simpkin as the next big one and Api was signed to help Simpkin as well as the team I don’t think we’ll lose Simpkin due to signing Api

We will see mate

We can't afford to let him go yet, and Parra don't want him yet. Let's see in 9 months time.

Besides Simpkin we have another couple of outstanding young 9s coming through the junior grades. Great to see we have one position covered for the foreseeable future for a change.

I took it as both parties sharing the ability to choose to take up such option for 2025, rather than that of one choosing not to take the opportunity and thus ending the deal.

I may be wrong, though I expect that it was used as a carrot for an aging player’s potential last contract. If we can nab him early with some extra dollars I would hope that the last year could be renegotiated to performance based.

Either way, much happier with Api than Hodgson.

Just enjoy the fact that for once the WTs are finally making some decisive moves in the player market…

And if you have actually followed Api’s career you’ll find his a much better player now!, then at any other point in his career, so, who cares how old he is?…Age is just a number.

Interesting take on things. I guess time will tell how things play out. I can also see Simpkin moving on. Or at least fielding offers in the not too distant future.
