Are Fifita and Gibbs off to the Sharks?

hmmm if that Tele article is accurate, I'm not all that happy about losing either really, especially Fifita.

//Salary cap pressure from signing Adam Blair has now forced coach Tim Sheens to release both players.//

Can't they do math? surely they would have worked out what was what BEFORE and seeing how much they could then spend?

That's what makes me think that it is multiple signings for us . They can't have stuffed up the salary cap this badly , could they with one signing .

Has there even been anything official about the tigers signing Blair yet? Is this a done deal or simple conjecture? I am living in WA and the league coverage out here is minimal at best.

nothing official - just stuff like this: (from the over a month ago)
The Roosters have also been linked to Williams' former New Zealand teammate Adam Blair, but it is understood they are not realistic contenders for the Melbourne forward.

Instead, Parramatta and Wests Tigers are leading the race for Blair, although the Tigers could find it hard to make room for him.

yeah you would hope there's no sort of stuff up, so maybe there is multiple signings. I hope this doesn't go on for too much longer and they can end all this speculation for the fans.

I personally feel that losing Andrew Fifita is a big mistake, but to lose him with this suggestion of some sort of stuff up…. he just had an extension to his contract, I don't get how they could suddenly find themselves in trouble and now have had to release him.

Cronulla went after Fifita and made an offer and you should be upset with Fifita"s manager for getting in his ear and saying its a good thing..Dont be upset with the tigers for not wanting to pay big overs its a mistake they have made in the past .. and the tigers do have the money to keep him just not at the price his manager was asking

Who else is likely to be given a hessian bag? Surely McKinnon, Payten, Fifita and Gibbs would free up enough coin 😕

I'd say he is trying to tell us we won't see that International Backrower combination…

I'm hearing alot oof back logged contracts hence the removal of four players this year so far, I hope it's more then one new signing but highly doubt mire then one high profile player coming next year unless humphreys can perform a miracle

I'm wondering if some of those contracts had bonus payments for players who were selected in rep games, eg: city v country.

That would at least explain why 6 weeks ago everything was cool ( or sort of), and then suddenly you have 6 or 7 players picked which activates contract clauses for bonuses and upgrades, then you have further pressure on the cap. Still not to that extent though.

But still, activating an option to keep someone and then a month later letting them go because of money sounds very odd to me…..

Perhaps we could get some tips from the salary cap accountants at Souths or the Roosters. They always manage. 😱pen_mouth:

Humphries has a lot to answer for. Everyone says he has financial sense but this is a monumental screw up. This will ruin our season and next as well. Now sheens can say we are in a rebuilding phase when we drop out of contention.

We needed something to happen to improve our forward pack. We haven't got aggression nor do we dominate any teams. Adam Blair will help us with that and we have plenty of juniors coming through to cover fifita.

If all true, I take my hat off to the club for making some very hard decisions that needed to be made. Hopefully this instills a bit of fear in the boys. Half the team plays like they are way too comfortable knowing their position is safe.

While Humpty should take the brunt of this, he pretty much inherited alot of these problems… The Tigers have been paying overs for a long time for under-performing players all for the sake of LOYALTY!!!

The think the finger needs to be pointed higher, ALL players should be put on notice that a pass mark is not 55% regardless who is your suitor on the Board, and the Club MUST get rid of dialogue like 'merger' & 'Football Club' from its business plan moving forward...

everyone is saying management are to blame but their is a salary cap - we have a lot of big name players and players who would have seen their price increase - Marshall, Farah, Lawrence, Tuqiri, Hieghno, Ellis, Galloway, Woods recently upgraded, plus the rest - we were always going to have to shed players for next year with Woods, Lawrence upgrading for a start -lets wait and see what our squad looks like and if we really think we could do better for the same price - knowing that Gibbs and Fifita would be getting more from the sharks then they are due to get at the tigers and while some of our forwards have been great over the last yr or 2 as a unit nearly everyone of you has complained about them

Spoken by a supporter that confuses passion/emotion with reality and facts :crazy

the deal's aren't 100% done just yet, the sharks are still trying to make us pay a little bit of the contract. we are telling them to gtfo

i have to say i'm pretty disappointed in lossing Fifita, i honestly thought he was the future of our forward pack. They should have used the same gusto they used on Woods to get Fifita as well. If there is a young player we should have payed overs now for later gains it was Fifita in my opinion.

And i still can understand paying 500k for Blair (if the rumors are true), this seems crazy to me.

This. It looks to me that the board is finally demanding that the direction of the club be driven by results. Unfortunately when you refer to expendability in our squad it's a case of Animal Farm because it would appear some squad members are pivotal to our success, irrespective of consistency.

The one thing I will say in regard to this whole kerfuffle with Gibbs & Fifita is that whoever signed Gibbs to a long term deal should be given an uppercut, when they knew his position at the club might not have been tenable. He was given security at the club he played his junior football for, and now he's been expected to up stumps and move on. Some would argue that it's a professional sport and that players should take what they can, but IMO the club has been unprofessional in this instance.

Not too disappointed to be losing Gibbs, on the other hand filthy of the thought that Fifita could be heading out the door.

Oh well…..Benji--------------tumble weed-------more tumble weeds-----Robson LOL

Losing Fifita will see our pack gain aggression and dominate teams? He is the only forward in our pack with those qualities.

I'm not saying that your not right But if playing city v country is classed as rep duties thats a joke . Rep duties should be Origin or playing 4 Nations test football

Fifita is really starting to look like he could be the best prop in the game. He is agressive, mobile and skillful. I will be spewing if we lose him.
