Australia Day...

I love Australia Day for being the day to reflect about the wonderful lifestyle we have… We will have a few beers, a feed, a surf and watch some cricket.

I'm also open to debate the date and why we could move it to lesson the burden/history on our Aboriginal Brothers/Sisters... I think it's a discussion we need to have.

I totally agree that it's a Day to reflect on what a wonderful country we live in and just how lucky we are.

BUT….....
I think it's a total lack of respect to our Indigenous people, it's a bit like rubbing salt in the wounds.
It's a discussion we have had amongst the Family and friends over the years that changing the Date would be appropriate.

I had a discussion with an Indigenous mate of mine at work in regards with the Date thing a few years back and he said to me " how would you feel if Lets say you lost a loved one on Christmas Day for arguments sake in a Car accident, celebrating Xmas Day just wouldn't feel right anymore after such event right"? Made total sense to me and understand why indigenous people feel the way they do.

I think the message is aimed at those extreme people from other countries who arrive and want to totally change our country from our way to their way. Those that are grateful and thankful to be here - the message isnt towards them

idk where the middle ground is. to me, australia is a very accepting society. i've never come across people at work, uni or everyday life that say stuff like "like it or leave it" "speak english" etc. it comes back to the fact that there are idiots in every society

Our history books identify the Constituation of Australia came into effect on the 1st January 1901, and while I dont want to simply say "this should be the day", I'd prefer we have a balanced debate about it.

The same needs to be done about our Flag. The changing of our flag I'm opposed to, but we could debate its relevance?!

Agree with Watto, I'm all for celebrating what makes this country one of the most accepting, safest and most stable liberal democracies in the world, but there needs to be a discussion about when this needs to be had. Australia Day is no longer tethered to British settlement of this country so I think it is high time it is moved in a gesture of sensitive consideration for the Aboriginal community.

I have no problem with people using the day to call out our shortcomings either, we should always look to improve on ourselves and you have to take the bad with the good.

It was just a **sticker I saw.**

No other intentions or racial over tones meant by it.
No where did I say I condoned it, or agreed with it.

Its the date that is the problem. Our indigenous population can not be expected to celebrate today given what their ancestors were subject to. A day of reflection definitely - but the 26 Jan is not a celebratory day for ALL Australians.

Yeah, New Years day is really Australia Day as before federation it was just a group of independent colonies. However, any new date would allow me to once again proudly celebrate our nation upon it.

Bloody hell ghost, seems like you have placed a very high priority on this 'beers and kebabs after midnight' vision of yours. Pretty sure you can get a beer and kebab after midnight in most suburbs in our country unless you live in the sticks somewhere. Go to a casino if your stuck,plenty of endless food and grog there.

Sure things haven't always been pleasant but we seem to have ended up ok.
Talk of 'Invasion Day' really gets my back up - people tend to forget the world was a different place over 200 years ago.
Nations conquered other nations and took the spoils.
Although I don't agree with what the Aborigines endured, taking a viewpoint from our time, it was the norm in those days.
It was distasteful and regrettable and should not be forgotten - but it sure as hell was not my fault.
Everyone is entitled to enjoy the day - no matter what anybody else thinks.
My hope is everyone can enjoy it together.

I guess that some people feel like they are being personally attacked or blamed with Invasion Day discussion. I certainly don't feel that way, but do think another date would be more tactful. These things change over time anyways, just like we now sing a different anthem. Maybe if we become a republic we can have the celebration on that day.

Right now I just hope everyone can have a safe and fun day.
