Australia Day...

I don't agree with anybody who wants to change the day - the 26th January was the day we were founded.
It should be celebrated for the growth the nation has achieved and how we have changed.
Sure things haven't always been pleasant but we seem to have ended up ok.
Talk of 'Invasion Day' really gets my back up - people tend to forget the world was a different place over 200 years ago.
Nations conquered other nations and took the spoils.
Although I don't agree with what the Aborigines endured, taking a viewpoint from our time, it was the norm in those days.
It was distasteful and regrettable and should not be forgotten - but it sure as hell was not my fault.
Everyone is entitled to enjoy the day - no matter what anybody else thinks.
My hope is everyone can enjoy it together.

Disease that the white man brought killed far more Aborigines , Native North ,Central and South Americans Indians , Hawaiians and the South Pacific Islanders than they killed with guns ,cannons or any other device

It is still the norm these day. Australia still fully supports Israel in the United Nations. In fact it was Australia who moved the motion in the UN to create the State of Israel on land already completely occupied. We are responsible to this day for Israel and white Australia receiving stolen property.

As long as Oz day is on the 26th, I think these types of discussions will happen. In the UK there is talk of changing their National anthem after the Queen's reign ends..and some other changes in the Monarchy. There is talk by Malcolm Turnball that the Republic issue may go to a referendum then. And we might see some change here as well.
Hope everyone had a good Australia Day. I certainly did. Down along the harbour in Manly, every second pop up marquee tent had the Hottest 100 countdown pumping out. The star of the beach was one bloke who was doing cartwheels in his mankini. Good times.

All I know is that we don't know how good we have it here.

I love this place and will do my utmost to keep it free of the crap that is floating around overseas.

Quite understandably but we were instrumental in creating crap for Palestine that has endured for 70 years with no sign of justice. The Palestinian issue has been and still is a major focusing point for terrorist recruitment. Australia repeatedly votes in the UN to keep the crap at the highest stink level.

A dated and exclusive holiday. Needs to change.

I blame those that set the date of Federation as January 1\. If they had chosen any other day, that could be our national day.

Perhaps change the date to when all citizens were granted suffrage (1962). Democratic nation where everyone "can have a go". Isn't that what the place is about?

Thats a great idea…..but i think at the moment we are more of a "like it or leave it " kind of place.

I blame the media for making people hate eachother!

I don't know if the homeless or people living in the remote Indigenous Settlements would agree

Quality discussion here. Lots of different points of view and respect shown for others on this topic.
This is why i prefer to look at the WT forum for Opinion pieces , rather than read the Comments at the bottom of News articles.

Ok Australia day has been done and enjoyed.
Only 364 more days till the hand wingers (who will do nothing during this period) come out and mount their high horses again….

SJW's are lazy scum.

What's wrong with it being 1st January every year?

Would definitely justify all levels of governments spending millions on Fireworks for a change.

And 1 less Public Holiday on the calander will increase productivity of the nation.

You don't know what you are talking about. It is only during breaks that I am not a highly active politicised person. I am just slowing down in my retirement, letting the next two generations take over.

I even did a political demo at that repeated grand final about 1977 or 78, the cops had to escort me off the field, actually around the perimeter of the playing field - was pelted with beer cans, even full ones. Fun day that was. Mohammed was going to the mountain that day - ha ha

We are still having fun here in Wagga. Joe Williams, ex NRL super star, boxer and all round super guy ( this is what they keep telling us ) was nominated for our citizen of the year award. Prior to the day he came out saying it would be hard for him to accept such an award as he is a young Indigenous man and getting an award on Australia Day would be a bitter pill.

Well he won and refused to stand for the national anthem as "it does not have any meaning for him" so the poop has hit the fan around here with a local councillor now asking him to return the award. The whole change the date debate is still going and could for awhile.

Top stuff. In 1988 Aussie Day I went to BB celebrations with Aussie flag but Union Jack changed to Aboriginal flag, people kept standing in front to try and hide. That was before the Aborigines became involved in the day's activities. Now they get top billing in BB township. BTW I may have been the first to use such flag. I took a foto to Redfern Aborigines afterwards.

Nothing wrong, I just think that Federation would lose out to New Years Day in significance. Not sure why though, I think NYD is a waste of a public holiday….I mean who cares if a new year starts? I would rather celebrate Federation.

We could lose a public holiday, but probably better just to make another one up:
