Couldn't wests tigers change to wests magpies just like balmain tigers changed to sydney tigers?

No…When they did that as with the Sydney Bulldogs the Competition was the ARL and was by invitation prior to SL...clubs could call themselves what the want...which allowed them to jump ship so easily..

With the introduction of the NRL a licence system was put in place with franchises agreeing to certain lengths of time in the competition...These are bounded by NRL Deeds to mainly avoid breakaway competitions but also ensure branding etc...At the Time of the re-structure of our board Wests Tigers extended it's agreement until 2022..

So does every licence run out in 2022 - I only ask this because I thought most clubs were only signed until 2018.

Not every Club..most do in 2018 …I think Dragons Knights Titans and Us are 2022..there was a cuffle around the Origin time in Melbourne Gould and Politis and Co weren't happy with the ARLC and the NRL wanted to break up licence dates...read it in an article around then...see if I can dig it up..

So in theory if a rebel comp wanted to start up in 2019 funded by Murdoch and Packer and shown on channel 9 and Foxtel as a 12 team comp - they would have 12 teams not under licence to the NRL. Funny that only teams signed till 2022 are those run by the NRL except for Saints which is a bit strange.

Wests Tigers aren't run by the NRL though…don;t know where that misconception comes from..

St George Illawarra, Wests Tigers, Newcastle and Gold Coast are the only clubs to have signed new participation agreements. The other clubs plan to hold out until the NRL agrees to some of their demands.

Keep their dinosaur dream alive.

How rude!!!

Understandable for someone who bloviates, not with facts, but rhetoric.

Personal attacks get us nowhere and says more about you than the "old dinosaurs".

Read Gregs posting before you run off at the mouth.

So what i'm suggesting is a possibility if the NRL don't give these 12 clubs what they want - the other 4 can whistle Dixie - so once again history repeats itself - by aligning ourselves with the establishment we are a possibility of being screwed over. Do the people who run WT have any understanding of the politics of rugby league.

Actually I forgot the Other 12 Clubs have fallen into line until 2022 as well…

"The clubs and the Commission are now entirely aligned and our fans and sponsors can get behind their clubs with the confidence that we will be around for the long term."

Key elements of the funding agreement include payments to clubs of $1.5m each year from 2016 to 2022 to be directed to improving their operational capability and to driving commercial revenues, and a grant of 130% of total player payments from 2018 – 2022.

Oh well that's good - all 16 clubs are in the same boat - I had visions 0f Super League. So I guess its all in the NRLs court now - they have the opportunity to build an NFL style business.

Following on my previous post I think this what the NRL wants - 16 licences - doesn't matter who holds the licences - until 2022 Wt is owned 50% by Wests and 50% by ?. Come 2022 that licence is up for grabs . Come 2023 Wests Tigers may be playing out of Perth. The cowboys may suddenly become the Karatha cowboys. We have americanisation everything else in this country why not rugby league.

You know what Eddie - there will still be a tiger on the jumper - but the whole show will be run by Wests - the only extinct dinosaur in this is Balmain.

If that makes you happy great.

I have followed the Wests Tigers for over 15 years so i really don't care.

I think you do - and the fact you slagged off ex Wests supporters is the only reason I responded.

I agree with Died Pretty; you are very transparent. Shame really that people need to be like this.

Call me whatever you want.

Im a Wests Tigers fan.

When I see stuff about Balmain and Wests I just roll my eyes.

If the shoe was on the other foot i would be saying the same thing.

Its over guys, it was over back in 1999.

Move on.

If we're financial by that point and regularly making the 8, there will be no case to move us on. Wests is a huge part of the Sydney market for the NRL.

I don't think the NRL will just chop and change licences willy nilly, there's no value in it and they'll alienate a tonne of fans for little to no benefit.

Paranoia about Perth again? Do people actually pay attention to the dribble that Buzz writes? Seriously?

Balmain Tigers and Wests Magpies both left the NRL in 1999 and won't be seen again at that level. Let them focus on juniors and live on in the community.

Any changes might only happen at board level. Who here can name anyone on our board, other than Go, without googling them?

The board are taking the club into the future, people need to leave the past where it belongs. It would create such a huge mess and divide the club, and probably destroy it, if all that bickering gets dredged up again.

That's why Balmain v Wests should be left in the past and possibly even banned from discussion. Why continue to promote disharmony amongst the fan base?

Agree BB,however it doesn't matter if Balmain eventually go out of the JV because of the financial status they are at in this point in time,or even if Wests group keep growing financially at a huge rate..NOTHING will take away the historical fact that the Balmain Tigers and the Western Suburbs Magpies united to form this great club, more success on the field and in admin will only help make us even greater….It doesn't matter what side you supportered or favour ....we are one..." That my friends is the Future",the rest is noted in the history books, and it was a great part of history to be revered by both sides of the JV...

There will always be a NRL Team based in Greater Western Sydney, its just a matter of whether its the WT or not.
The Perth thing gained a lot of impetus from David Gyngell banging on about it,both privately and publicly, for about 3 years.Since he's gone the whole thing has gone quiet, the focus from David Smith seemed to be shoring up Qld, with a 2nd Brisbane team and a Western Qld based team.Since he spat the dummy who knows what direction Grant and the new CEO will take.

I can …Marina Go (Chair) Lucio Di Bartololeo (ind) Rosemary Sinclair (Ind) Simon Cook (Wests) Tony Andreacchio (Wests)...

Show-off!

Let's just put the matter to bed before handbags start being thrown. For those holding out hope that the Magpies will fly again at NRL level, lets use some common sense.

Lets say for argument's sake that roughly:
-1/3 of our supporters come from Balmain
-1/3 come from Western Suburbs
-The remaining 1/3 are new WT fans with no allegiance to the parent clubs. This includes basically all of our supporters aged under 20.

By reverting back to the magpies logo, you would be alienating at least 2/3 of the supporter base, in additional to many former maggies who are more than happy supporting the Wests Tigers in their current form. And for what purpose? Misplaced feelings of nostalgia?

And if you think that current Wests Tigers fans will somehow automatically support a rebadged wests magpies, ask yourself how many Norths fans support Manly these days?

There's your answer.
