Balmain Tigers face extinction

I believe the WT grant is a seperate line item.

A contribution to Wests Tigers would not be itemised in the Balmain Leagues report. It is captured in the grant to the Balmain Football club as they are the shareholder in the JV. $400k is a big drop in the grant.

Back to the article, I note Sironen's comment that Wests Tigers will struggle. How?

Also, why can't we just move forward with the joint venture? Why do we need to keep the name Balmain as per Sironen's quote? Leave it behind and embrace the JV.

Gary,
I agree on the joint venture. Why does Balmain get so much kudos when it is Wests Magpies with all the cash? The Rozelle towers are inappropriate for the area and the football club members were conned by Benny Elias into signing a petition in support of them. The original proposal was for around 12 storeys then it was amended to 32 then it was 'downsized' to 25\. If 12 was too big to start with what will 25 do to the area?

i dont know how souths got as many people behind there march but supporters from most clubs got behind them , we will need that and the nrl to also support it , and the premier of this state and number 1 wests tigers fan , barry where are you ?

No win situation for Barry(IMO),best to stay out of it publicly and not show any sort of preferential treatment.
It was always going to be a big ask to get the approval thru.,there were options that involved the Leagues Club to continue trading whilst development plans were approved but they were overlooked for various reasons, the Sydney Metro didn't help thats for sure.

Also Gary - why are the Wests JV supporters continually forced to go to Leichhardt Oval? We need a cash injection for Campbelltown so we can have a 35k seat stadium there with great facilities that cater to a growing, not shrinking, football playing population and that ground also happens to be right on public transport.
Imagine flying into the new Wilton airport and then jumping on a train straight to a Wests game

You're probably right Gary. As for Siro's quote, he's trying to drum up support for the club.

The Reality of the current situation that Balmain Tigers become extinct is something that the dwindling numbers of its supporters have to accept is that the time has come to say goodbye !!!Balmain has no money they do not support their juniors financially and they are "dying" so please get ovwr it and move on and support the Wests Tigers AND "GET WITH THE PROGRAM"!!! sheesh- some people love to live in the past and refuse to face the truth. :deadhorse:
Balmain are broke and are dead in the water -period. No rallies, speeches, internet campaigns and "old players" being troted out in support is going to change the situation. MOVE ON = "he who pays the piper calls the tune guys!!!!! :roll
The "latte" drinking set and greenies loons that infest THe area of Balmain and its surrounds don't give a monkeys about NRL and especially Balmain Tigers. :blah
Balmain Tigers your time has come to die gracefully- BYE BYE!!!!!!
Wests Ashfield and Wests Campbelltown have the money and the big growing supporter bases. :sign:

Now, how many of you knuckleheads voted against going to Super League? The move would have guaranteed our survival. We should have taken the money and ran. I was too young back then to speak up or vote but the people that voted to stay loyal to Ken Arthuson and the ARL doomed us forever. Balmain had to merge and now if we dont get this development approved, we're gone forever. I hope you people are satisfied.

Ben Elias told me not long aga that before the vote to go to Super League or not was held at the Balmain Leagues club, he got on stage and urged members to vote to go to Super League. He said he got booed off stage!

Where is Arthuson now? ARL? They're gone!

By the way, when Souths were kicked out, they had a rally which drew 100,000 people. The articles says a rally has been planned for us too. Anyone have any details of where and when?

I was a long time supporter of Newtown until 1983 when they were kicked out of 1st grade. I could tell you what I think of Ken Arthurson but I will be polite and just say that he was the main driving force behind the removal of Newtown from 1st grade. I would also like to bring to your attention that during the late 90's Manly were forced to amalgamate with North Sydney. This they did for a short time until Manly complained of the non-compatability of the merger and pushed Manly to return as a 1st grade without any connections to North Sydney. Manly succeeded with this push and North Sydney are now virtually extinct. Who was behind this push, mainly Manly supremo Ken Arthurson the man behind the extinction of Newtown and North Sydney .

NSW cup was funded by Ryde Eastwood

Junior Reps by Balmain (sponsors and help from WT)

Junior League Clubs (wanderers, five dock, leichhardt juniors etc) get NO money from Balmain. I know a president of one of the clubs who told me the situation.

So where did the 585k go? Or are we just talking about 2012? Is it really unusual for junior clubs to get no money from the district club? The two junior leagues I've been a part of (North Sydney and Central Coast) don't appear to give much if any support to the clubs themselves.

Mainly funded by Ryde eastwood up till at least a season ago unsure if thats still the case, unsure of the amount of funding also

It will be very very difficult to garner much support or sympathy with Benny Elias in the background - fact is I think most people regard him as a shifty grub and sleaze ball…..until the whole thing can be 110% cleared up for anyone interested...theres waaay too many unanswered questions mainly formed by malicious rumours on the net...imo

Norths did not meet the criteria, Manly did. Norths needed the merger a lot more than Manly needed the merger. However since going it alolne Manly have found it very difficult to keep the club afloat. Maybe they should have given the marriage a little more effort. I suppose they have won a couple of comps since then though…

I think Manly were just interested in the cash that got them out of a bit of a financial jam at the time.

You know I really thought that Barry O'Farrell would have gotten right behind this as it was his predecessor ion Kristina Kenneally that sent the whole project tumbling into the abyss with the cancellation of the Sydney Metro Project.
I'm led to believe that the plans at one stage included a Train Station beneath the building and this was what the developers were counting on, as a goodwill gesture Barry should do what ever is legally available to him to rubber stamp the proposal and head off any litigation.
So the NIMBYS are concerned about the twin tower aspect of the development can I remind them* that there have been some fabulous Twin Towers no longer with us, the Twin Towers @ Wembley and the Twin Towers at the World Trade Centre and they were pieces of beauty.
* It's not like the objectors will read this as they don't seem capable of being reasoned with.

You make a valid point, but if a half owner pf WT is dead and bankrupt, how is that a good thing for WT (short term and long term)??

Very sad business indeed.
I feel for the Balmain diehards (as I did the Newtown and Norths faithful) and hope it can all be resurrected.

As a Wests man through and through I gotta say this gives me no pleasure what so ever.

I'll also say that as an ALP man I might suggest that perhaps the Balmain club could get Dawn or some distant relative of Laurie Nichols or Blocker or someone with an emotive bent to front a press conference and bag the tripe out of O'Farrell … You know really dump on him ... Tear up his number one ticket on primetime TV. Let the people know that if O'Farrell let's the club die then Balmain boys (and their vast pool of supporters state wide) will never ever be voting Liberal.

Probably not the best idea for a couple of reasons:

1\. ICAC has been called to sniff around. Not the best look for the Premier to step in and approve the development when he is connected to Wests Tigers and;

2\. Why burn bridges? Campbelltown has been mooted as a stadium to be upgraded. We annoy Barry and Penrith may get the upgrade. Our club then loses double, the leagues club and the stadium.

Yeah Gary but I'm a shifty Snoddy …I'm really angling for a double win here ...
(1) the survival of Balmain and (2) the overthrow of the O'Farrell Government.

Let's hit those damn Menzian blue bloods with an orange ban.

The workers united shall never be defeated, The workers united shall never be defeated ... (repeat over and over whilst remembering to growl, showing any remaining teeth to figures of authority you may happen to pass along the
march).

Snoddy followed the Magpies before the JV and the Magpies will always hold a special place in his heart and there's nothing wrong with that just as the Balmain Tigers do for me but that doesn't mean for one second that we haven't fully embraced Wests Tigers.

I tip my hat off to him for what he said and found it sincere and shows his integrity.

What are your thoughts on Balmain legend Benny elias in this whole saga. Its obvious what the neutral and other balmain fans think.Read comments at bottom of this link.
http://www.foxsports.com.au/league/historic-balmain-tigers-face-extinction-unless-250m-plan-can-save-them/story-e6frf3ou-1226530178890

Elias long lost me as a fan, I love him as a player but don't respect him as a man. That was before this whole saga began too.

And its important to remember that no one man is greater than the club, nothing Benny does will devalue Balmain as I remember it.
