Banji may seek release to play rugby in japan

Did this story emanate from the Daily Telegraph?..The same media outlet that openly displays its hatred for the Wests Tigers and continually publishes stories that are false?…enough said....Is there a case for defamation here?

It was Paul Kent who broke it. Despite being from the DT, I actually respect Kent a fair bit. And the story had quotes from Tauber himself which is better then most DT articles would do.

Benji Marshall's manager has vigorously denied claims the NRL superstar will be pursuing a contract to play rugby in Japan over the off-season.
>
Reports in several newspapers on Thursday suggested Marshall would be chasing the big dollars on offer in Japan given that Sonny Bill Williams had been allowed to sign with Sydney Roosters despite current rugby commitments and his ongoing boxing career.
>
**While Marshall's manager Martin Tauber was quoted in those reports, he strongly disputed any possibillity the New Zealand skipper would be heading abroad in an exclusive interview with Fox Sports News on Thursday afternoon.\
\
"My comments were: if ever he was to seek to go and play rugby in Japan, we'd first have to get a clearance from the club, and also the NRL would have to give their blessing," Tauber clarified.\
\
"So no at the present moment … he's not going anywhere, he's contracted to Tigers until 2015 so nothing will change."**
>
Tauber claimed the idea of juggling the two codes was "impossible" given the possibility of an NRL finals campaign and Marshall's commitments with the Kiwis.
>
He said that Marshall would look at moving to France or Japan to play rugby in the next phase of his career, but while he was contracted to the Tigers, rugby league would be his sole focus.
>
"We've had chats about the possibility (of Marshall going abroad) at some stage in his career, probably towards the back end of his career, (possibly in) 2015.
>
"He may very well take the opportunity to go to Japan or France to play the 15-man game. But at the present time he's with the Tigers, so the fan base and the sponsors who are probably quite concerned about the press (in the newspapers on Thursday) can rest easy he's not going anywhere.
>
"There's no future to it; there are too many difficulties.
>
"If you want to play rugby in Japan, you have to sign a contract with a Japanese club some time around August or September that you are committed to playing rugby during their season.
>
"The difficulty with any player in that state who's contracted to another club is that he couldn't sign the rugby contract if he's already playing rugby league and possibly in the finals series. So that's number one.
>
"And number two is: the difficulty would be to get the release at that time, so it's just not going to happen."
>
While Tauber was adamant a contracted player could not pursue an off-season deal with anyone else, he reaffirmed his belief that stopping an uncontracted player from having a summer abroad was a restraint of trade.
>
The NRL stopped Marshall from heading to Japan when his contract with the Tigers expired in 2009 but Tauber believes any attempt to block a player under similar circumstances was unlawful.
>
"Benji was off contract at the end of that season; we had a prospective deal on the table for him to go to Japan for substantial money," Tauber said.
>
"But the then CEO of the NRL David Gallop says if he goes we won't sign and approve the NRL contract when he returns.
>
"At that stage, in my own opinion, it would be restraint of trade because he wasn't contracted to anybody."

Thats a mighty big reversal Martin.

And they reckon Greg Willett's dodgy
Tauber couldnt lie straight in bed…what a weasel

Though I can see the appeal of a game to benji where kicking out on the full is OK.

$BW deal has set a bad president.. Unlike AFL League players are versatile enough to play other codes in other countries… I can understand the desire for players chasing the $$$ but unless ARLC can match the cash then players like Benji may not choose to sign any NRL deals and become a union player that plays NRL in northern hemisphere off season...

While not exactly the same (remove the boxing element of course), I can't see a great deal of difference between what Lote did compared to SBW?

Dear Wests Tigers Members,

As many of you are aware, there have been media reports this morning suggesting Wests Tigers star Benji Marshall may seek a release from his current contract with the Club.

Let me put your minds at rest. This will not be happening.

I have spoken with Benji’s manager, Martin Tauber, this morning who assures me that Benji is totally committed to his contract with Wests Tigers for the next three seasons.

The most important message for you, as a Wests Tigers Member, is that Benji Marshall will remain an integral member of our team and will not be seeking a release from his contract.

Benji is currently with his team-mates at a pre-season training camp on the Central Coast. The boys have been working very hard under the watchful eye of new NRL Coach Mick Potter and Physical Performance Manager Hayden Knowles.

The team has really enjoyed interacting with our supporters on the Central Coast as was evident by the large turnout at The Dam Hotel in Wyong on Monday night.

Let me also take the opportunity to thank the many of you who have already renewed your Membership for 2013.

On behalf of everyone at Wests Tigers, we greatly appreciate your support and I’ll provide you with further updates on the Club on a regular basis.

Yours sincerely,

Stephen Humphreys

Chief Executive Officer

If only ALL the unconfirmed, unsubstantiated storys occured on the final day of the clubs membership drive….we fans would need never ask another question again with Hot Foot Humpty on the blower in a flash hosing down the flames

The club CAN advise and inform people, fans, members when they wish to.
A bit more often would be nice

"It is probably something I will raise with the chief executive in the next couple of days, when they come back from their exhaustive camp,'' Tauber said.
>
**"It's a little bit different this time because Benji is contracted until 2015 so we have to get a release.**
>
"That's the difficulty. But I want a meeting to say let's talk about it.
>
"It's an opportunity for them to earn additional income that would set themselves up financially for the long term.''

The original article quoted Tauber directly, he could argue he was taken out of context, but how stupid would a player manager need to be to offer up sentences like that?

Tauber backflips all the time

>
Dragons chief executive Peter Doust says the club went cold on signing him after being told by the player that he would be out of action for the next six months.
>
“Over the past week I met with Tim Moltzen and Wests Tigers CEO Stephen Humphreys to discuss this situation, believing the Club should not finalise its position until it had spoken “face to face,” Doust said.
“This meeting confirmed that Tim Moltzen wanted to take advantage of the changed circumstances, presented by Wests Tigers and was not going to honour any of his previous commitments.
>
“At the same meeting, Tim also revealed that he has been carrying a shoulder problem for most of the 2011 season which he had yet to have addressed, medically. He in fact told me that his surgeon had advised that very morning that his shoulder would require six months of rehabilitation.
>
“The shoulder injury was something that Tim or his Manager had not previously disclosed and something that would have influenced the Club’s decision in July."

Not disclosing injurys…...and then embellishing them for moltzen when he changed his mind

I also remember Tauber assured Doust there would be no problem with Moltz obtaing a relaease from the tigers.
\

I wonder what evr became of his investigation???

Lote didn't ditch his team halfway through a season like SBW did.

The issue isn't how they left, its how they are returning.

SBWs disgusting act of sneaking out of the country isn't relevant in the topic of whether or not players should be allowed to play a stint in union while having an in principle agreement with an NRL club.

Lote and SBWs circumstances are similar in that regard, yet there was no large song and dance about players spending off seasons in union when Lote returned.

never ever believe too much info from the smellygraph its a series fairy tales and wild imagination a proven fact

I would lose a lot of respect for Benji if he did this

It would mean he misses all off-season and pre-season training as well as running the risk of getting injured.
He doesn't need the extra money either he is already earning plenty.
It would be a kick in the teeth to the club and completely disrespectful.
Playing for the tigers isn't what you do on the side, I want players who playing for us means everything to.

I'm sure Benji will make the right decision and stay away from union.

I can tell you for a "FACT" that as ofg about 4-6 weeks ago rumors about Benji exploring options to go to the dragons was 100% "CORRECT" my source was "GERARD BEALE" at a funeral we mutually went to."FACT".Benji thinks sheens was the be all and end all.FACT.

Good, we can relax about Japan, but…

Has Gerard Beale released a press statement or written to members to deny this FACT, or is it still at large?

I dont understand your negative response this has nothing with the "FACTUAL" comment that I made in regards to benji/beale re dragons and sheens.Benji is staying at the tigers but the "FACT" remains that what happened 6 weeks ago happened.Benji seeked his options out.P.S notice today that Bronson harrison got a release and is going to st george.Im fearful that this could rear its ugly head again 12 months from now if benji and the tigers dont perform this year to go play with his "other" mates.

Benji has no sheens get out clause in his contract…. Seriously where do these stories come from. If any club let a player put that in his contract the CEO should be sacked.
