Becoming a development club

I always thought that failing to win a premiership in the 2010/11 period and to secure a Top 8 position in 2012 - was the catalyst for his sacking - but when you search anything on it, it's more suggestive that the releases of Beau Ryan and Heighington seemed to cause an uproar for players and fans.

Thanks for that Lauren.
It appears to me that nepotism has been a constant hand break on our on field momentum? I hope this time is different. The club deserves better, the fans deserve better.

Farah was asked what happened in the final game against sharks last year. The season was on the line. They had the chance to go 8th instead of ninth. They looked flat. Farah looked annoyed with the question, but suggested they had a long campaign with the previous 2 games being particularly gruelling.

I often wonder why Tim Simona got such a crazy idea in his head. What could he have been thinking? It was suggested that his actions and suspension had a negative effect on the team’s performance.

Gus Gould always says that the best clubs at the top of the ladder develop their own talent. And says the clubs at the bottom who try to buy their way up the ladder will never succeed.

Tim Sheens always said that too. It must be common knowledge in all clubs.
It’s also a part of the Australian culture to be impatient for success. A coach doesn’t have much time to prove himself, and a player needs to go places very quickly. But the club has no such constraints and therefore should not allow this urgency to create panic. The club appears to lack the high level of continuity in management systems and goals which lead to success. The club may even lack the ability to identify its own shortcomings?
Difficult to say without a detailed review of systems and procedures, but you could be forgiven for thinking that we can’t retain our developing players and we can’t recruit recruit experienced with an acceptable level of success.

It's no accident that we had a plethora of junior talent coming through during and after Sheens.

Yeah sheensy was big on developing players from the junior ranks. If you look at the cowboys side we faced in the 2005 GF alot of them were brought up during his time there. Then when he came to WT he did the same thing along with some smart recruitment ie Gareth Ellis. I feel Madge is going the same route and hopefully when the COE is finished we will be able to retain the better juniors

So when does development start? The storm and roosters only start developing players in Flegg. The sharks start at SG Ball. Are Souths and Panthers the only development club that targets players in their mid-teens?

Which model should we follow? Stacking the flegg side with other clubs talent or building a large base of juniors from a young age?

Follow the roosters and storm system it clearly works. Fill your top squad with guns and the remaining 10-13 spots go to mostly 18 year olds with big potential. Penrith system only works because of how strong their junior nursery is, We could do the same if the club ran it right

The Roosters and Storm system only works when you’re a desirable destination due to a history of long term success.

Probably the most amazing thing about the Storm is they have a number of utility players ...but they all know their roles no matter what position they play

Yeah the first thing you hear from new Storm recruits is how Bellamy lets them know exactly what their roles are. Perform your role at the highest level, nothing more and nothing less.

That philosophy totally resonates with me just from my own employment history. Seems like the ideal way to coach a side to me.

Mark ONeill was responsible for us gaining Ellis

Moses Suli

Thing about "juniors" is these are all debatable as whether they are your "junior" or not. Moses Suli, for example, played his junior footy at Fairfield and was signed by Tigers after Harold Matts. Paseka is a Tongan/Kiwi who played junior footy in Liverpool and signed to Tigers for Toyota Cup. Fifita was from Blacktown via Griffith and signed for Toyota Cup.

I personally think it becomes a fruitless exercise to over-think about players you did or did not retain at a given moment from your entire junior base. What you did with Player X in the past should not impact the decision made with Player Y in the future, that's not prudent. You treat each case on its own merits.

Panthers, Eels, Tigers, Broncos, Warriors will ALWAYS see footballers from their junior grades somewhere else, because their catchment is simply too big to funnel them all into one team.
