Benji Backs Young Ace Brooks To Measure Up

I think the previous posts are over-reacting. Let us take a step back for a moment, take a breath and look past the issues with Benji's current form.

There are two things to consider:
1) This Friday's game is a home game, so our club is pushing for press coverage.
2) We are LAST on the table, so we should be happy for any positive press we receive.

If you actually read today's SMH, the Benji article covers almost two of the 5 pages they have devoted to league. Wednesday is a slow news day for league, so the articles they choose are often fluff pieces, which this one mostly is.

We thus note that Tigers are getting ~40% of today's footy coverage about a kid who hasn't even played first grade yet. It's not as if Benji called a press conference to talk about Brooks, he has no control over what the SMH choose to run with; his comments may have been only a small part of the overall interview.

The people who think Benji shouldn't make public comments should reconsider, because he is mobbed by the media whenever the opportunity presents itself. That is very important exposure for our club, who in the early days had almost nobody of public interest (how many interviews with Buckets O'Neill or Joel Caine?)

Benji is a diplomatic, well-practised speaker who never denigrates club or teammates. He has very high role model expectations thrust upon him and a high overall profile.

Certainly he is out of form, but it's not as if public silence will magically improve his performances on-field. It's also not as if the 20 minutes he gave to do thkis interview was at the expense of some important training or tactical preparation for the game.

Let's all relax and be happy we have players who the media cares to talk to, compared to say Parra or Penrith our cellar-dwelling mates.

Extremely well put!

Brooks is not selected for tonight's catch up game in reserve grade but is listed for Saturdays game.My thoughts their, probably dont want him playing tonight in case he is required on Friday night due to a injury to either Benji or Sirro at training, but I seriously doubt we will seem him for a little while. You would not like to see him face the Rabbits with our team playing busted and their must be doubt about rushing such a young kid into the top grade after all the shoulder problems Benji had.

Would love to see Benji say for once "NO COMMENT" but thats why the club wants to extend his contract, he can generate a headline even while playing like a busted bus for nearly two years

Sorry jirkys….Im still at the grieving stage re: our last ''halfback''

Theres plenty of time to go through the entire gamut of emotions for our next 7.

Actually, I put my mates chokky bars in different wrappers…..

....that way, they get their Snickers in a Twix.

Agreed. I think it is just the media train chugging along. It is probably best to ignore it.

Well I for one was pleased to hear Benji's thoughts on Brooks. They follow on from Farah's and Potter's comments in the presser from last week. All believe he could do a job offensively for the side even now. Defensively whilst he doesn't shy away from his duties, they obviously don't want him being run at by Frank Pritchards, Andrew Fafita's and so on. Everything is pointing towards a july/august introduction in my eyes.

So the media doesn't care about guys like Hayne and Sandow?

Not directed at you Steve, just quoted you to save time

I would say that Brooks will be playing sooner rather than later now Miller was moved on! I would say in around round 13 against Penrith wouldn't be a bad start a few should be back by then and hopefully going a bit better.

No problem. My point is more that this is all just hype designed to sell papers and Benji sells papers. The real issues won't be dealt with in the papers. It is just froth and bubble.

Could not agree more with jirskyr, this could be a defining game in our season, and the more interest we can generate the more likely a few more fans might turn up,because what we have been dishing up lately will not attract fans.
A win on friday while unlikely would do wonders for team morale, and could get us away from the spoon for good.

If this is about getting more fans to the game, they should just name Brooks at 7\. Talking him up will not make anyone show up to the game but if i believed he would play that would make the game more attractive for me.

Heh that was my prediction in the pre season in the countdown thread.

Benji , a piece of advice

The only person Benji Marshall needs to worry about is Benji Marshall

If you could pull your finger out, run hard and play direct ,maybe we wouldn't be in this mess

At some point this year I'd like to see Potter **STICK** with this line-up.

6-Marshall
7-Brooks
13-Sironen

Me too. This is how I see the future looking, so why not put it on show for a limited time this season. How I view our side looking in 2015 in terms of what we currently have:

1.Tedesco
2\. Koroibete
3\. Nofoaluma
4\. Simona
5\. ?????

6\. Marshall
7\. Brooks

8\. Woods
9\. Farah
10\. Buchanan
11.Sue
12\. Fulton
13\. Sironen

I think Brooks is way too young and inexperienced for first grade at the moment. He is a very talented player with exceptional skills but has only had four games in the under 20s and one or two games in NSW cup if i remember correctly. He will be our long term 7 option but we need to give him time to adjust to the 20s and NSW cup first before even considering him in first grade. He needs to physically develop otherwise injuries might occur. I would wait until next year at least before giving him a chance in the trials and see how he handles the step up then.
