Benji coming back?

St George-Illawarra have tabled Benji Marshall a one-year, $300,000 contract extension in a bid to ensure he finishes his career at the joint-venture outfit.
There has been speculation the Dragons are keen to offload Marshall, who is off contract at the end of the season, in order to free up salary cap space for other targets.

While the club is investigating the prospect of signing a long-term half to partner Gareth Widdop, officials believe Marshall still has something to offer as a player and potential mentor to young playmakers.

Fairfax Media can reveal the Dragons have made a $300,000 offer, plus a car, which could be topped up with third-party payments if he were to stay put. It's a delicate balancing act for the 2010 premiers, who also have big-name players Ben Creagh, Mitch Rein and Joel Thompson coming off contract.

Complicating negotiations is the fact the Dragons must upgrade a number of players for 2017 after they triggered incentive clauses in their contracts, while attempting to keep the nucleus of the side together.

The offer on the table is well short of what Marshall commanded in his pomp, with the premiership-winning playmaker earning well over seven figures in previous seasons when endorsements are factored in.

However, the fact the Dragons are trying free up space for the 31 year old, albeit on an offer much less than he could command in the Super League, suggests he is still viewed as a valuable member of the organisation.
Dragons director of rugby league pathways Ian Millward, who is responsible for retention and recruitment at the club, said he had been in regular dialogue with Marshall's management in the hope of working towards a fair result for both parties.
"Ultimately we would like to keep him," Millward said.

"Some people may have thought we're not keen on Benji - we are keen on Benji. We've just got to work things out so we adhere to the salary cap.

"We're tidying up some things with our salary cap to make it more efficient than it was previously. That's the challenge while trying to keep Benji in our organisation. It's a process we're going through and we're backing it up with clear and concise dialogue with Benji and his management.
"It's important that neither party is second guessing what the other is doing. We have an open and clear dialogue and we'll continue that."

Marshall has been linked to a return to Wests Tigers, the club where he made his name, after his manager met club officials last week.
The Tigers are also in limbo in relation to their halves combination for next year given Luke Brooks and Mitchell Moses have options in their favour for 2017.
The pair, who can extend their stay on deals worth about $600,000 each, have been asked to bring forward their decision before the agreed June deadline so the Tigers have some clarity about the future of their roster.

It's unlikely Marshall will jump at the Dragons offer immediately as clubs and players weigh up their options in a market that includes free agents Brooks, Moses, Cooper Cronk, Luke Keary, Corey Norman, Luke Elgey and Cody Walker.

But at least the former Kiwi international has a fallback option in his quest to remain in the NRL for a 14th season.
The Dragons were the surprise packet of last season, making the finals despite most critics tipping them to finish in the bottom four. The side narrowly lost their semifinal against the Bulldogs after Marshall was forced from the field with half an hour remaining.

"Benji's been really good for our club, he's in good form and his preseason has been good," said Millward, who wouldn't be drawn on the latest development in negotiations.
"The ultimate would be to get someone in our ranks that could develop under Benji, that would be the perfect scenario.
"Hopefully we can move towards a good result for both parties down the track and that doesn't mean we're maneuvering to get Benji out, not at all. It's the opposite."

VETERAN playmaker Benji Marshall says a reported $300,000 contract offer from St George Illawarra made him “chuckle”, and he’s confident he can hold out for more money in 2017.
>
Fairfax Media reported on Tuesday the 31-year-old halfback has been tabled an extension from the Dragons to the tune of $300,000 — roughly half what he will earn this season.
>
Marshall is off contract this year and his future remains clouded, with rumours of a return to Wests Tigers and speculation the Dragons are chasing Cooper Cronk’s signature.
>
Marshall was quizzed about the latest development when he appeared on NRL 360.
>
“I had a bit of a chuckle,” Marshall said when asked how he had responded to the $300,000 sum.
>
The former Kiwi Test captain’s current playing contract is thought to be worth more than $600,000 a season.
>
He’s happy to accept a one-year deal for 2017 but believes his services are worth more than the reported figure.
>
“I want my footy to do the talking and to say here, this is what I’m worth,” Marshall said.
>
“I think what I’ve got to offer this year is going to be more than that, and off the field probably adds to that as well, so that’s not in my figure.”
>
Marshall is in no hurry to shore up his future and says he will wait until round five to sit down with his manager and discuss his options going forward.
>
He enjoyed a standout 2015 season in which he led the Dally M voting for the first half of the year and steered the Red V to their first finals in four years.
>
Earlier this week it was reported the Tigers are interested in offering him a contract to bring the 2005 premiership hero home to Concord.
>
Tigers skipper Aaron Woods told NRL Tonight on Tuesday he would welcome Marshall back with open arms.

People would boo me but i wont mind seeing him back for 2 reasons

He will get a fitting and deserving farewell
He HAS improved his game and restored some of his former glory from his prime

Thanks Rowdy for linking him to us

This could have some ramifications with our recruitment next season

We don't want you back and sure as hell don't need you back

Go to England and waste some clubs time and money over there

Salford sounds good

Ill cry if we lose Moses or Brooks to bring Benji back.

Fans that want him are probably letting emotion dictate their senses.

Never go back.

It would be a massive step backwards bringing him back.
We can't continue to be a Sentimental Club.

We have made a massive sacrifice with playing 2 relatively inexperienced halves combination to what? Bringing Benji back and playing him where?

So do we bring Heighno back just to give him a send off?

Brooks is not going anywhere and will extend his Contract beyond 2017.

Benji is still worried about his back pocket and thinks his worth more than what he thinks, Moses and Brooks will be shining by Seasons end.

Love the Wests Tigers…..it's all Sentimental for your reasons wanting Benji back + he will be 32 years old next year and has no speed like he used to.

He was a washed up hack in his latter years with us and he's still a washed up hack now !

Just as I'm getting over last seasons garbage and looking forward to a new start , this Marshall crap rears its ugly head .

Plus .. I don't think that Sue /Siro and co
Would apreciate running of his absolute garbage inside balls all night and getting smashed for the privilege .

I can't believe the club has even contemplated the friggin idea .
NO MORE PLODDERS .

Signing up our young players should be the priority. The Tigers have no one signed for 2018\. It's a clean slate. Let's build a dynasty around Teddy, Moses, Woods and Brooks. If our management can't hold onto these four players in 2017, their is something wrong

I think the club know Moses and Brooks are the way forward but they also know their is a chance one or two of them will up and leave, so they are looking at all possibilities. I would have Benji a fair way down the list as a possible replacement no6 or 7 but the club have to think about worse case scenarios.

Once again the club dug a hole for themselves by granting the wonder kids an extension to their contract clause, but I guess they may have had a gun held to their head by a player manager

Report in today's Telegraph that if we lose one of them Blake Green is at the top of the list of who we want as a replacement.

Not exactly sure where they get that information from however…

no denying me being sentimental, surely you cant blame me
Benji is like the first love, you can never forget ..

i'd like him to come back if our current 6 & 7 were to leave .
Plus i wont sign him for more than 1 season, and in the hope he hangs his boot and goes out with the class that was attached to his name for more than a decade

I read it on Fox about this
What puzzles me is why sign someone else if one or both had to leave
There is Drinkwater and we all have seen Littlejohn in Action
Im sure they have enough class to get the job done

Scoffed at the 300k deal tabled by the Dragons.

The arrogance of the dribbler.

I'd rather Drinkwater or LittleJohn

I'll stop following rugby league if we lost the two kids. Just too gutted, they have so much skill and to have both come on at the same time and then let go of other juniors is unthinkable.
