I know how much Benji has meant to the WTs and the fans and supporters, having said that Benji must have had an idea that his contract would not have been renewed and the possibility that retirement was looming quickly ....
The pace of the game, his poor defense and he and Brooks not being able to close out games must have been weighing on his mind...I do hope he fulfills he ambitions for 2021...I will always admire him for what he has done for the WTs and rugby league at the highest level, however I wouldnt like to see him bow out on a negative, especially what he has done for the game...

Too many fans still piss in his pocket TT .....we all struggle to admit we can't do what we did 15 years ago

That was my point Hap,Benji must have known that his time in the big arena was coming to a close...Admire him greatly...but he WAS brilliant in past years ...not as good now and I wouldnt like to see him get severely injured or slide downhill because he cant do what he used to so easily...

I’d say he has a lot of hangers on that tell him he’s still got it ?

You could well be right and some people find it difficult to ignore what their so called mates tell them

If he didn’t love himself he wouldn’t be Benji Marshall

Don’t judge a footballer
by the jumper that he wears.
Colors that are outside
are not what is inside.
Nor consider what his life is like
beyond that he leaves on the football field.
For what he hides he doesn’t need to show
you or I don’t need to know.
Judge for what emotions he brings
beyond the team, beyond the game
for what he does, he knows not why
instinct never be tamed, truth can never be a lie.
Judge him for what the joy that he has brought
not many will do the same in sport.
And if now has come to part
know that this man may have caressed your heart.

I follow Tigers because my dad has been a follower since Balmain Days and I have grown up watching. He wants to call the club about their treatment of Benji. Disgraceful. Thank you Benji

He was a big reason Manly had so much possession in the first 20 minutes. Gave away a set restart in their second possession, they scored, then another set restart after points, then a penalty not long after. Yet people still say he is going great cause of his try assists. At this point he's setting up 2 tries but giving away 3 every week.

To his credit though, Benji is one of the best halves in the game when it comes to setting up shape off the back of a line break or 2 quick plays of the ball in a row. I just wish he could defend.

Mate , lately it’s a lot more than 3 . There’s so much in decision around him at the moment , you see guys out of position to help him because he’s struggling so bad . Whether he lets in directly , or he causes someone else to accidentally cause a chain reaction along the defensive line because they don’t trust him , he’s a real issue .

I think he should pick his moments and play second fiddle. That’s the only way we can have any chance to resurrect this year .

So grateful to have had the period of Benji dominating at our club :) and Robbie. Such an exciting thing to witness Hopefully in the next few years we will return to similar heights as their peak for our mighty club

Another non Wests memory I love is when Benji led NZ to beat Australia in the big events. He was so good around then. I believe Stephen Kearnys coaching instructions was something like 'give Benji the ball, do something' it was the best era of Aus v NZ competition ever.

💙 Benji #1
💙Robbie #2

Always brothers, legend for life 👍 I ran into Scott Prince in Bris and he said they still chat all the time.

Fair enough. I figure the decision is made there is no need to debate him now. Just love what he did for the club now :)

I was watching the Benji Marshall highlights on the official NRL YouTube channel. It got me thinking. Why did he lose his form after 2011? One reason I could point to was he lost his speed. He lost his speed because he put on weight, but he had to put on weight in order to not get injured anymore and survive in the NRL. So I think 2005 Benji had a lot more skill and speed because he was so light and nimble. But that body couldn't hold up getting bashed for more than a year so he had to put on quite a few kilograms.

And then there was the compound effect. Due to putting on weight, the skills he had from playing touch got used less, as they aren't as effective when used by slower players. Due to practicing them less, he stopped using them, as Tim Sheens always drilled him into practicing those sorts of skills.

Once his touch skills could no longer be used, he had to reinvent himself. That's where Broncos Benji came. He showed quite a lot of good form in those 2017-2018 years. Then after that his defence quickly eroded, until it's at the point where it's hard to select him due to it. I think if he had a contract for next year he would be out of the team right now. I actually think he developed the skills to be a proper game manager, but his old mentality would always possess him.

He has always been rocks and diamonds. Highlights don't show that.

He still had similar skill and speed during this period, although did lose a bit more recently. I think the issues started when we lost our halfback/s, and at one stage Tim Sheens had Benji playing at 7 which never worked out, and it's then that doubt maybe crept into his game for the first time.

He's always been a free running player - playing whatever he sees in front of him, rather than organising, and needed someone there to compliment him there during this period.

Losing Robert Lui had a massive impact - he and Benji were building a lethal combo, but when the club moved him on, this coincided with a dive in Benji's form.

have offered Benji Marshall an off-field role at the club for next year. The veteran hasn't given up hope of finding a new club for 2021 but faces the very real prospect that there are just two matches left in his @NRL

What happened to not wanting to play for another club he was spinning when he came back.

Clearly only cares about himself and doesn’t care about the club.

He would kill it as a club ambassador. Appeals to all ages of Wests fans, has respect of fans from other teams and with his media training would be great with the corporate side of the club. Add some type of coaching role and his next 10 years are set.

Or , go to Brisbane and be on a extended bench for a season.

He’s definitely the perfect club ambassador. Don’t make him a halves coach though

Get him to coach brooks. Then he might learn to play what’s in front of him

I dunno. I think out with old. All the way out.
Farah is apparently still helping out here or there but we don’t see his image posted in the media every time we hear about the club. That’s the way I’d like Marshall to be involved. Lawrence also. Give the coaching staff the space to coach and the new leadership group the space to lead.

Someone who played more by plan than instinct would be a better coach. Andrew Johns or Sterlo would be good.

Get him talking to sponsors, corporate gigs etc. No coaching roles but he can drink beer in corporate boxes smoozing up to money men
