Benji Marshall - Mega Thread

Benji IS NOT the Tigers. If Potter has made one thing clear its that no player is bigger than this team, which is exactly the way it should be.

Oh and just as a side note, as brilliant as Carney and Thurston are neither have taken their sides to a winning GF, and before you come back with 2004 Thurston with the Dogs does not count he had minimal impact in that team. Neither will win anything with their current teams either..if you honestly believe the Sharks and Cowboys will win anything you are seriously deluded.

since 2005 only broncos, storm and manly have won anything iirc.

I would take with a grain of salt anything that is written about Benji at present.A lot of two bob jurnos will write anything if they think it will get a audience.

Iam sure he is not happy being benched and not enjoying playing in a team that is going through hard times but till I read a article that he puts his name to or the club puts their name to,I will discard the article as fluff

He's meant to be dirty. That's why Potter did it. It doesn't take a genius to guess how Benji might be feeling right now, but I doubt he'll be trotting out in Eels colours.

Most of these rumours are written by the journalistic equivalent of the office gossip when she gets tipsy on chardonnay.

Honestly, if he wants out for a payday then he needs to play well. Like others have said, its hopefully a move intended to ruffle feathers, though take the media vultures with a grain of salt at present, had to laugh at the Japanese Rugby bit.

Benji has needed to re-evaluate for a while now, seems extremely pressured to make magic happen when-ever he had the ball, now Fulton is a band-aid but if he can manage to steer us down the park for metres maybe the message gets through that stock play has its role in the modern game, and Benji can learn to adapt as a distributor while allowing options to unfold in front of him.

I think a lot of this stuff is just written to rev someone up.

I know a lot gets thrown around when we're losing but its hard to believe there wouldn't be some kind of truth to it. Maybe not to the extent that he wants out but it isn't totally unrealistic that he's had a bit of a sulk. These guys are human, not robots so when you're losing emotions are bound to flare. Wouldn't surprise me if his nose was out of joint **cos its something Sheens never would have done even if Benji ran over his dog.** He wouldn't be use to this kind of treatment.

And there in lies the problem - had Sheens grown some balls and shown who was the boss not just with Benji but with all under achievers i think we would be basking in that dynasty that was talked about in 2005.

Wests Tigers

Wests Tigers Coach Mick Potter has spoken to weststigers.com.au about Benji Marshall and Jacob Miller.

The decision to start Marshall from the bench for Friday night’s match against South Sydney has prompted Potter to today exclusively speak to the club website.

He also talks about the decision to release the young half-back to Hull FC and the opportunities it brings for Miller.

Q: Your decision to start Benji Marshall from the bench this week has attracted plenty of talk?

A: Benji’s profile means he always attracts a lot of interest and talk, sometimes positive and sometimes negative. I understand that and Benji has to manage that intense interest in everything to do with him. The fact is that Benji is part of our 17-man team for this week’s match against Souths and I expect him to play a very significant role in what will be a big match for us. Coaches play around the composition of the starting line-up and the bench almost on a weekly basis. I just felt starting Benji off the bench was the right way to go this week and that’s what we will be doing.

Q: What led you to make this decision?

A: By his own admission, Benji is down on form and confidence at the moment. He knows his game well, he knows what he needs to do to recapture his form, in fact he has publicly stated these things very honestly and accurately. The decision to start him from the bench this week is simply my view on what is in the best interest of the team for this game.

Q: How did Benji react to the decision?

A: He was very disappointed. I knew he would be because Benji has a lot of pride in his place in our team and the game generally. But whilst disappointed, he demonstrated his professionalism by putting in without doubt his best training session of the year yesterday. Benji knows his actions will speak far louder than any words. I fully expect him to have a very positive influence on this game. We need him too if we are to put in the kind of performance the team expects.

Q: The decision to release Jacob Miller. What was the reason behind this?

A: As we know, Jacob was our half-back when the season started. Although I think Jacob is a fine player, things just didn’t happen for the team. At the same time, Jacob received an opportunity from Hull FC to secure a lucrative three- year deal and seeing he was off contract at the end of this season, we didn’t want to stand in his way. Everyone at the Club wishes Jacob well.

lies, damn lies and pretenders with names like 'the lurker, the mole and weidler'.
and yet people keep listening.

Let's face it. Farah just didn't like Miller and he might have had a point. Miller strikes me as a clown around type and lord knows we have enough of those and are trying to move away from that culture.

Pffft

Spin

How pissweak his reasoning on Miller…anyone swallowing this garbage really needs a reality check.

Potter just waffles..I am far more impressed when I hear Trent Robinson give his views..

If a coach wants respect from his players and fans he needs to be truthful and not beat around the bush. Leave the spin to the politicians.

What was he supposed to say? Potter addresses these issues in the public eye professionally in my opinion. Since when has the public had the god given right to know every inside detail within a club???

Maybe his answer about Miller was 100% accurate, but if theres more to it, what purpose would it serve to come out and say "the senior players lost confidence in Jacob, Jacob has an attitude problem, etc etc????" He answered things well.

We are all doing it tough with how things are going, but the reality check is that we shouldnt expect to find out the inner working of the club…..EVER

Nothing wrong with Potter's views on Miller. Would probably be considered more unprofessional if he was to criticise Jacob. The kid is young, well 21… and deserves the chance to crack it elsewhere. Like some have said, it seems there's a fair chance footballing reasons were not the reason for departure. If they were, he'd still be here for now.

The simple reality of Miller is that he is not viewed as our long term option. He was offered a long term deal. Within the confines of that deal there was an opportunity to free cap space for this season and they took it.

The reasons why they didn't see him as a fit or give him more of a run become kind of irrelevant at that point.

It sucks, I rate him but as a business decision and in our current position I can accept it

Good luck to Jacob over in the UK, I think he'll go well there. Potter said Luke Brooks will come into consideration later in the year, and at the start of the season I predicted he'll play FG this year. However given how we are performing now, I'd be inclined to hold him back and stick him back in NYC alongside Moses. This may sound selfish, but we have a real chance to go back to back this year in the NYC, particularly if Moses and Brooks are the halves pairing. He's still eligible for NYC next year so look to blood him then once he's had another off-season with the top squad and has put on another couple of kilos.
