Benji Marshall - Official..

its nice,i suppose but the feeling towards benji on this forum was negative to say the least towards the end of his time here before.
he was changed from a running five eight to a distributing half back.He also had that hail marry up and under which was always the teams fifth tackle option.
but there are lots of fabulous moments as well.
if supporters expectations arent too high,it will be a positive signing.

So $9.2m + $300K in the new CBA? Instead of $9.2m inclusive?

Yes I believe so. Same figure slightly different breakdown. Instead of a 9.2 cap with a 300k out of cap allowance they're going to have a 9.5m cap. Basically you get the allowance without needing a veteran.

Ha, so just a cap inflation to save clubs who've stuffed up.

Figures.

Bingo. Even with that the Dogs are apparently 500k over according to the post game show on Fox.

Yeah low $,dead-cat-bounce applies to a lot of Footballers coming to the end of their Careers ,good backup for our halves next year,.
Reynolds seems to be getting lots of niggles the last 2 seasons so Benji should see some first grade.

Not quite, from my understanding it was to be a a cap of $9.2 which included the $300000 long serving player allowance. It will now be a $9.2 cap with the $300000 long serving allowance allowed to be spent outside the cap. So effectively clubs will be able to spend $9.5\. This is an effort to increase the cap without the general public realising they are making allowances for the clubs in salary cap trouble

I'm the first to admit I had the irrits with the way Benji left. I think he carried on poorly at the time, and he's admitted that himself. He went to the Saints and had a mixed bag there, managed to nearly win the Dally M there and was quite maligned despite often outperforming Widdop.

_His time under Bennett while short should see a certainly more mature and professional player_ return and while he'll likely have a place in the 17, hopefully Cleary will keep him grounded and give him no guarantees. He's certainly a mark up on back up halves we've had in the past in JLJ, Drinkwater etc.

At first I thought it was nice for a bit a nostalgia but nothing else, but if he's not costing us much it is very much a clever signing for both roster depth and off field purposes. I must say I am excited about taking my young bloke to watch him play, much the way my father took me to watch a young Marshall play way back in 2003.

_They've won me over with the signing. It's full circle… Hopefully he can give the club and the fans one last bit of Benji magic. There'll never be another player like him when he was at his best._

i couldnt have summarised this any better

Tickets sales and jerseys alone will be great for the club.
It will dwarf his small salary.
I've still got the game ball from the grand final sitting in a case. It's quite possibly the magic flick pass ball.
The 2 balls went to auction so it's a 50/50 chance.
I stare at the grass stains on it and think of Benji.

Thats awesome

Hodgo returns… Benji returns... we beat Manly in our best performance of the season.

Coincidence? I don't think so!

Dont get over excited otherwise Beau Ryan, Farah, Gibbs, Highno and Co will come back too

Todd Payten, Skando, Dean Collis, Richards, along with Tim Sheens

Buckets would be great in a management type role.

Hopefully he has grown up in his time away from the club

In what way? Apart from his Auckland Blues announcement (which he admits he handled badly) he has not put a foot wrong IMO. The Macca's incident was a non-issue. Considering he grew up in a football club from age 17 or so he has handled himself magnificently. Compare him to mungbeans like Ferguson, Dugan, Carney, Pearce etc.
Welcome back Benj, a very feel-good announcement for our club. Looking forward to seeing him on the paddock next year.

You are looking through rose coloured glasses mate. He left the club on poor terms and was central to the player centric culture that we have spent the last 5yrs trying to change

Looks like they're canning that anyway.

Are they canning it completely, my understanding is they were removing it from the cap and having it as an extra?

It's an extra now isn't it? I thought they were folding it into the cap.

In yesterdays paper, talk of it being taken outside the cap to appease the players union - and would effectively put another 300k on the cap if it remains at 9.2m giving some relief to the whinging clubs without actually raising the cap amount…

I don't believe any current Bulldogs actually qualify for the veterans player allowance so it's clearly not designed at appeasing them

I think it's fair to say he's changed over the last 5 years too. He's been humbled by failing at rugby. He's been humbled by the Dragons showing him the door. He's been humbled by having to take a bottom dollar salary at the Broncos just to stay in the NRL. He's been humbled by getting parked in reserve grade for the Broncos. And how has he responded? By putting in 100% for Redcliffe and stepping up every time he's been called on by the Broncos. A bloke that was a superstar of the game and could have just walked away managed to swallow his pride and work to earn a chance at redemption. I'm behind him 100%.

Marshall will be a key player for us. I don't think of him necessarily being in our top 13 but let's face it we're not going to field the same backline every round. Potentially he could play anywhere in the backline apart from wing.

Thrilled to have him back and his form this year is solid. He also comes with a combination with Gamble.

I reckon he would go ok at centre if needed and with Hodgo back its like putting the band back together.

The bus is looking ok to me :righton:
