Benji Marshall - Official..

I'm the first to admit I had the irrits with the way Benji left. I think he carried on poorly at the time, and he's admitted that himself. He went to the Saints and had a mixed bag there, managed to nearly win the Dally M there and was quite maligned despite often outperforming Widdop.

His time under Bennett while short should see a certainly more mature and professional player return and while he'll likely have a place in the 17, hopefully Cleary will keep him grounded and give him no guarantees. He's certainly a mark up on back up halves we've had in the past in JLJ, Drinkwater etc.

At first I thought it was nice for a bit a nostalgia but nothing else, but if he's not costing us much it is very much a clever signing for both roster depth and off field purposes. I must say I am excited about taking my young bloke to watch him play, much the way my father took me to watch a young Marshall play way back in 2003.

They've won me over with the signing. It's full circle… Hopefully he can give the club and the fans one last bit of Benji magic. There'll never be another player like him when he was at his best.

Your second sentence is the key, he has admitted his faults. Maybe Robbie will one day do the same for his which were/are much worse, though I certainly won't be holding my breath.

Ivan is an astute coach and he knows the importance of culture and club tradition. He has talked about the club's history and also the players of Wests and Balmain. He has pride in the clubs tradition and knows that it can turn a club's fortunes.

Just as an aside in terms of culture. Look at the English Premier League and how a German coach changed the culture of a small club in terms of Huddersfield Town to the point where they are now playing in the most prestigious competition in the World. For many years Huddersfield Town were in the lower divisions and for the past few years they were fighting relegation in the English Championship. Wagner, the coach, changed the culture and had all the players and fans on board. Interesting is the point where the Chairman and owner said that he had had enough of being down the bottom of the table year after year. He said that he threw a hand-grenade into the organisation and hoped for the best - he was the first Championship Chairman to employ a German Manager - the rest is history. It was a major turnaround in only one season - unheard of from the perspective of change management. I suggest people read about it because it really is instructive in how club's can turn around.

Ivan doing the same thing here and he knows the importance of culture and tradition. Benji is one cog in that process.

Man we need someone like Benny Elias, Tommy Rodonikas or Shane Warne to teach these guys how to media manage properly. None of this slagging off your team mates, just say "where is my beer and cigs! that <insert banned="" word="" here="">ref <again>us over. I am off for a Liquid lunch followed by 3 schooners. Hope that guy doesn't hold it against me bloodying his ear up."

But hey lets hear Robbie or Benji explain how they apologise for doing something they did not fully realise would have public implications that they probably apologised already for. Ill get the Camomile boiling on the tea table.</again></insert>

As far as a cheap backup half goes Benji is solid. As long as his attitude has changed like it seems to have then it's fine. He knows he's been signed as a backup player, much different to when he always used to chuck a hissy fit if dropped to the bench.

I don't think he'll play much NRL for us at all, and it does mean we don't have any proven organising halves in any grade, but he'll create positive media attention and some fans will be happy to see him wearing our colours. I hope they enjoy our ISP games next year, it will be good to get larger turnouts to cheer the boys on. Hopefully the rest of the ISP squad fills out too, they're rubbish this season.

Tickets sales and jerseys alone will be great for the club.
It will dwarf his small salary.
I've still got the game ball from the grand final sitting in a case. It's quite possibly the magic flick pass ball.
The 2 balls went to auction so it's a 50/50 chance.
I stare at the grass stains on it and think of Benji.

Surely there must be 3 balls?
The ball in play gets kicked to the sideline and the ballboy throws another ball to the player for the tap - but there are 2 sidelines?

Here's a question: does Benji qualify for the veteran's allowance? He played for Tigers for 11 seasons, do they have to be consecutive with his current contract?

Even if he would, I don't think he's covered because Lawrence would take it up.

Looks like they're canning that anyway.

Are they canning it completely, my understanding is they were removing it from the cap and having it as an extra?

It's an extra now isn't it? I thought they were folding it into the cap.

In yesterdays paper, talk of it being taken outside the cap to appease the players union - and would effectively put another 300k on the cap if it remains at 9.2m giving some relief to the whinging clubs without actually raising the cap amount…

Its quite complicated, its current an extra during the existing CBA, during negotiations for the new CBA the NRL has been including it in their cap total of $9.2M. They have now said they will remove it from the cap and have it outside effectively raising the cap to $9.5M. That's my understanding anyway
