Benji: Too timid, too reactive: I've become a shadow of myse

im another in a long list of tigers fans who are fed up with what appears to be a lack of effort, drive, hunger or whatever word you want to use, from benji. Like everyone else i can see that he looks like he doesnt want to be out there and is just going through the motions. He isnt the only one but he stands out more than most.

i have no idea what the reasons are for his slump and i hope he comes out of it very soon, but im not confident that it will happen. What i do know is that for a while after 05 everyone kept saying benji needed to play with more sturcture and stop going for the big plays because it could, and was, costing our team possesion and games. So he tried that. He isnt that type of player and when it didnt work for him everyone started with "where's the old benji". Sometimes he looks lost out there and doesnt know what to do. He is over thinking and isnt sure what the best option is and often picks the wrong one or does nothing.

It may sound like im defending him and in a way i am, but there is no excuse for a lack of genuine effort and enthusiasm during a game which is what he has been dishing up for far too long now. But he isnt alone.

I would be disappointed if the club let him go, not because we lost him but because it would be the end of his career in the NRL, i cant see any other club that would sign him on current form. I'd like to see him stay, on hugely reduced pay, but if he is let go i cant say i would disagree with the decision.

Its sad.

He has been brilliant at times for us and often Ive come on here after games and claimed he'd be an all time legend for the club, that we are priviliged in that we can say we saw him do his stuff live….in 30 years time our kids and grand kids etc will ask about him

He's headed the same way as Sheens, the man who brought us our only premiership....out on a bad sour note.
I'd hate for Benji to be remembered mainly for the wrong reasons.....theres still time to rectify that Benji, for Sheens there isnt.

One question…...

What happens if he clicks and resurrects his 2010/2011 form again, carries the team into the top 8?

When the team was firing and he was at his magical best for 7 years, you the fans labelled him "The Messiah" Now he has an 18 month form slump and 95% of you want him gone? Laws of averages say he's done more good than bad for this club. You want to bet against 7 years of brilliance against 18 months of bad?

Some brave people here.

I think he still has something to offer. I'm not ready to let him go just yet.

As they say, "never bet against a champion."

I can't see how articles like this one are helpful to anyone especially Benji. The coach needs to step in and move the focus for Benji away from playing this out in the media and concentrate on working on it 'in house' at the club.

it comes down to self belief.

if Benji believes he can do it, he is the only person who can prove us all wrong. 😛ray:

time is beginning to run out for this season, for him to stand and deliver.

THAT WOULD USUALLY BE THE END OF MY INPUT INTO AN ARTICLE LIKE THIS BUT HOWEVER ITS NOT, I HAVE ONE MORE THING TO ADRESS HERE.

The reaction on this place to marshalls form is more disturbing then anything, Benji is like a son to me, watching him grow up a tiger has without a doubt been one of the most enriching and exciting things in my life to date, its amazing how much joy he really has given me. Lately it has been sapped and I hold most of you accountable, it really is sickening to know these are the fans I unite with in a win. By all means hold him acountable for his form he is a man and a footballer, but we are his family and with such a destructive family, why would he fight for them? Please some of you have a holiday from this forum, it wont miss you.

Well said JD…..the vitriol aimed at one of our all time greats has been nothing short of disgraceful.

Im disgusted in to go for the same team as these absolute clowns.

A huge BOO and I cant wait for Benji to slay it again and all you worms to crawl back into your little holes.

Is your life so empty, that experiences to you hold no meaning or emotion? You must be severely depressed, because obviously you have no memory of the past. Your probably not even a wests tigers supporter, you couldn't be. Im angry about the way wests tigers are playing and I vent all the time to my mates and family, how about you go find your self a little friend and have a real conversation about footy maybe that might help your mental illness.

Ok, I will bite…

To me, the definition of an empty life would be filling the void by vicariously adopting a sportsperson, and them providing the most enriching and exciting moments in your life. Im also not too sure how my supposed short memory could make me depressed. To my way of thinking if my memory was that bad, even if i was depressed, I would soon forget why and return to a more normal happy state of being... Finally, I am quite sure Im not all there, but if the person on the interweb with a pretend son thinks I am mentally ill, I will take their word for it as he can probably smell his own kind.

Have a good night.

Funny, very good.

Is your arse getting sore on that bandwagon?
How many bloody threads need to be created to say the same thing? Your all revving each other up trying to outdo each other to see who can say the most vicious thing. I did find it funny at first but it is just sad now. I think the point has been made.

My arse is fine thanks Stryker , its my head thats the issue because of this :brick: every time I watch Benji play

Maybe he needs to write messages on his wrists like other players do

Something like this " If unsure ,RUN"

Then on the other wrist the message could be "Check the other wrist dummy "

And you asked if we had got our point across Yes ,probably on the Forum ,but I bet Benji hasn't got the message yet

I liked Mick Weymans old wrist tape messages…will try and find the foto

As Jim Richards once said after winning Bathurst and got booed by the crowd "You are all a pack of Mongrals" fair dinkum you lot loved him in 05 when he helped us win the trophy, we love benji blah blah blah, all of a sudden we are on the bottom of the table 10 players down, confidence is shot,we don't no when our next win is coming from but I am a believer in that you support your team good or bad. you mob are not what I would call true supporters, sure I hate seeing the way we are playing and screaming at the tv and kicking the cat in the guts after a lose, but 1 thing I have learned over the years DONT EVER KNOCK A CHAMPION cause it will come back and bite you lot on the arse….................

now fire away with your dumbass responces to me,im ready

MAFIA

First of all Benji is a Tigers great. He may soon be a former great but he is our greatest player since the two clubs merged. He has won us more games than anyone, farah is a close second.
I would not extend benji's current contract though. I think he has a contract for another year or two. I would just let him play and when we get closer to the end of the current contract evaluate it then on CURRENT FORM. In the meantime if benji is playing well he will be in 1st grade. If not he will be in NSW Cup. My suggestion to benji is also move away from the footy show….you are either a footballer or a comediene but you cannot be both.
Their is a lot of criticism towards benji ATM which is probably well deserved and the ball is in his court now...either put up or nsw cup time. I would also say...we dont need to be talking to the press all the time about our cry sessions and feelings. Football is a brutal game and you do not need to be perceived as a soft touch or cry baby on the footy field.....you should be FEARED.
Lastly I would suggest loosing a little weight and get back to what you do best. You definately are not showing any hunger apart from maybe in your kitchen.
A few years from now your career will be over and surely you don't want the highlights package to stop at 2010.

Man, the responses in this thread are **harsh**. People like to talk about how arrogant Benji is, he was just admitting that he's sucking right now and doesn't measure up to how he's played in the past. And he's doing what I wanted him to do, studying the video! He and Potter think that if he keeps this up he should be in reserve grade, how many unrealistic full of themselves players would come out and say that rather than blame outside factors (even if that blame is only in their own minds, since they have the option to not even say ANYTHING)?

Agreed - he is not being arrogant at all. He speaks great. I just think that he needs to deliver and his words mean absolutely nothing. He needs to turn things around and quickly.

Speaking for myself I'm dying for Benji to kill it. I can also see that he seems to have lost it. I'm not blaming his attitude or his desire or his media presence or his weight. I think he really wants to perform and he has been loyal and great for our club - I'm just concerned that he doesn't have the ability anymore.

The vitriol is based on one fact for me. This article is pure Sheens in nature. Talking a good game. Reasons but not excuses and this is the same rubbish that has ridden this potentially great club into the ground for the past seven odd years. All the posturing but rarely the effort to bring on the result.

Secondly it revolves around his form and the contract talks. Probably not his fault and good on him for looking after him and his own but we are we seriously expected to sit and swallow this rubbish from a player who has clearly not given a crap at all on the field this entire season. Maybe I am misreading it and it is a personality thing but as it stands it irks me in a major way. The wry smile after a loss while chatting to his buddies on the field from the opposition. At least do it once you get back up in the tunnel so we don't have to see it.

The biggest point about Benji is that he has been in and around the NRL for a decade and he still makes the same mistakes and the same excuses every time. There is no improvement. In the salary cap era there is zero time for nostalgia. It is a results and performance driven industry. This family/brothers forever tripe is all well and good but is it of any benefit to the NRL side? I would say no. Players come and go from every club every year but only Wests Tigers players make it seem like a soap opera.

The equation is simple. Don't write an artile about what you are going to do. Just go out there and try it. Get involved. If you were playing rubbish and actually having a go there would be very little to upset the fans because a form slump is acceptable. Going out there and actually not having a dig is not.

We as Wests Tigers fans have seen worse performances. We have seen less talented players but it is hard to tolerate a guy not giving it a go. We can handle form slumps, we can handle the terrible games but it is hard to stomach the Nick Graham like effort he is putting in at this point in time.

Put the effort in. Do it for the rest of the season and do it consistently and you earn a new contract

I think the main reason why there is such a Benji back lash at the moment is due to the contract renewal talks. If we took this out of the equation, discussion about his current performance issues would be directed to the possibility he is playing injured or lack of confidence in himself, in which case there would probably less vitroil in the comments. I do agree though when we are going crap there is nothing positive to discuss so we all head for the negatives and there are mulitiple threads on similar veins. One good win would certainly reduce this for at least a week
