Benji

Is he ever going to get back in this team?

I actually feel for him, it's possibly his last season, he hasn't been playing all that bad he's actually been playing pretty good (bar his poor defence, but that's been there his whole career)

It would be sad to see him go out only playing a few games this season, but I also applaud Madge for having the cahonies to drop him if he thinks it's best for the team.
It's a tough call but if JRey is what's best and if he stays on the park and in form and if he's going to be here for a few more seasons then Benji might have played his last game.

The difficult thing for Benji is and although he has been a great player for us,Madge builds his gameplans on defensive structures and Benji has been a defensive liability for us ...I recall he apparently has the worse defensive stats in the NRL this year..I hope he does work hard to not only get back in the team but also on his defense…
Gone are the days of flambouyant football at the club,Madge wants a culture change and unfortunately Benji is getting older and his style of play is also withering out....

As sad as it is, there is a time to realize that the best days are behind him. He should be happy for the legacy he left behind, and the inspiration he provided for a lot of kids. They should rename the flick pass the Benji special!
But you can't hide players anymore. I remember all too just before he joined the saints how different coaches tried to do that, but the opposition invariably ran at him, at will, and over him. Can't do that with this coach in charge, and possibly with no other coach.

There's some noise about Benji being shopped to other clubs but I don't buy it.

Reynolds will injure himself before the year is done and Benji will finish his career in Tigers colours.

We're hiding players now, bringing a stronger defender across to the right for the non tacklers and having two relatively small players in Brooks and Mbye protect a forward.

Benji would probably would've already retired if it wasn't for us and even If someone else signed him, he'd be playing a utility role or a depth player. Benji is still having a big influence off the field id say, so I'm not sad for him.

Doubt he leaves. We would be stupid to release him and not sure he would leave the club in what’s probably his final year

Absolutely. We released Thompson seemingly without having a replacement. Releasing Benji would be madness.

My favourite player ever but his days of regular first grade are over. Too much of a liability in defense and his sideways, individual running are not conducive to a disciplined and direct attacking game plan.

I don't know about that, I am sure Madge has something in the pipeline.

Bias aside, no player has displayed such an array of attacking skill or audacious attitude when probing opposition defenses. People who have not seen his prime years should watch the highlights package on YouTube. Awesome but, alas, in the past....

If either Luke or Josh cop an injury, Benji is straight back in, we don't have the depth, unless Madge wants to give Madden a run.

Walters at 6 is worth a shot, I mean he is a half after all, and his dad was a pretty good one too

He is not his dad though.

"Benji has been a big part of the change to this point in my time here," Maguire said.
"That is also a big part of what Chris Lawrence is about. Their presence in and around the team is so valuable to us because we have got a young group that is growing very quickly and that’s what we all want.
"People like Chris Lawrence and Benji Marshall want this club up where all the supporters, all the ex-players and everyone else want it to be because it has been a long time between drinks.”"

Madge may well have decided that Brooks, Grant and AD will run the team..

And the 6's job is to shuffle early ball, chase, bring energy and defense.

In which case, Walters would be the logical back up to Benji.

Benji back in means the team changes...he dominates the ball, distributes slowly, crabs across field and defends poorly. He offers much more instinctive /off the cuff plays, but that also negatively effects the 1-7-9.
