Len Killeen 69 grand final
balmain club record
South African RU winger and goal-kicker extraordinaire shifted from Rugby’s amateur ranks to play for St Helens in 1965. Killeen got a first-hand view of the 1967-68 Kangaroos in England and decided that Australia was the place to play rugby league. Signing with Balmain he established a club record 207 points (9t, 84g, 6fg) during the club's premiership winning season in 1969 - surpassing the great Keith Barnes. Killeen's kicking style - placing the ball upright with an ultra-quick walk-up - was seen to good effect in the Tigers’ shock, 11-2 win over Souths in the infamous 1969 grand final. He saw out his career at Penrith in 1972 before returning to South Africa.

LOL. I had Len's #5 on my supporters jersey way back as a kid. I have to say, though, that although he was a class goal kicker, as a player, he had one enormous deficiency. If jerseys back in the day didn't have collars, he never would have made a tackle. The guy was dead set, a joke in defence. Loved him though!

There was a joke about Killeen which said he only had 2 running speeds slow and slower. He could certainly kick goals and every team used to "carry" a goal kicker no matter how useless thry were in general play

Killeen was slower than Momo but a terrific kicker.I really miss the kicking duels from those days such a great tactical weapon which all teams tried to use

He only needed to have his kit laundered once or twice a season too. He was as clean at the end of 80 as when he ran on to the field.
I miss those days!

I saw him score some great tries and save a few as well. Not good in defence but a bit better than a lot are making out.
