Best Defensive Squad Yet?

am i the only one that thinks this?

even though farah is playing halfback we have four 80 minute players starting in the forwards who all pass the defensive standard being flannagan, ellis, rhino and fulton.

looking forward to the game!

Wests are always a stronger defensive outfit when Payten is in the side. He tidies up that ruck area something fierce. If he miraculously runs out for the Tigers on Sunday, i'll be a little more confident. Just a little….

i agree but he is no 80 minute player who can keep up his consistancy

I'm not convinced that it is yet. We still give away far too many easy metres and leak too many easy points - we average 23 points scored against us per game, the dragons only 10.

The team will leak less points when they get the completion rate back up to where it should be and can start applying pressure to the opposition rather than absorbing it like they have done the last couple of weeks. It comes back to controlling the ball, if the Tigers do that then the defence will improve further.

Share the exact same thoughts as Willow.

When we hold onto the ball, we'll do less defence, tire out less and as a whole be more effective in defence. I guess the fact that we have few defensive liabilities in the side now also aids us. In this current side, only Benji and Fitzy are the inept defenders. Benji is masked by Ellis and Lawrence no however and Fitzy is on the wing.

I agree. The Tigers are a much better defensive outfit when Payten plays.

I agree. Our Possession needs more discipline and eveything else will look after itself.

I also agree we are a better defensive unit with Payten on the paddock…

I like this team ….... defensively looks better on paper and we still have speed to burn out wide.

We in the forward battle we win the game for mine

I wouldn't mind seeing some decent attempts to get a repeat set. Instead of trying to score everytime, if nothing is one, nothing is on… kick it in goal and trap them and try again. That should help our defense out a little bit aswell.

Your 100% right. This is were 'that' Halfback comes into play. While everyone is split on who, what, where, its been obvious this year, this is an area we can improve on dramatically.

With 10 to go last week, and only 2 points difference, basic football was the key, but we pushed it too hard and lost the mental battle!!!

fulton should be able to play a decent hooking role which will allow farah to actually get us these repeat sets. i dont recall moltzen putting foot to ball too much…nor lui..

I looked at the team and it doesn't look bad.

Fulton should be a better defender around the ruck than Farah however I am not so sure Farah is good defending at 7\. After thinking about it this week though I reckon Farah can be a real good 7.

I hope it works.

nothing wrong with farahs defense around the ruck…45 tackles and 3 missed tackles last week

I remember him missing some when he was at 7 before.

I hope he has a blinder - atm imo he is so far from being the dominant player he can be it isn't funny. Maybe at 7 he will turn his game around.

Benji has been our best player for a while now however he also needs to step up - he seems to be disappearing in the last couple of games.

Tiger, very good observation and thoughts. In todays game and in the last 1-2 years, its not that hard to know where the 7/6 is gona defend. As a result, the traffic is sent thier way and efforts by attacks to isolate them, is an integral part of todays game. Not every 7/6 is a weaker defender, but it does sap's thier energy for attack by increasing thier workload.

However, If your 7/6 is a weaker defender, I feel it would be easier to hide them in the ruck. The only problem is, the extra workload, may become a problem with thier energy for attack. As a result, Its really a no win situation except the 'missed tackle' count may be less?

One thing is for sure, with the extra defending in the ruck, the better thier defence will become and I feel this has really helped Robbie's game to no end. If Robbie defends 3 wide on Sunday, I feel we will see the best of Robbie Farah!!!
