I think Dostoyevsky would have to be the all time best author.

I loved Crime and Punishment, but The Brother Karamazov wore me out.

Yeah Crime and Punishment is the better of those too. Devils is great too.

But my favourite Dostoyevsky work is Notes From Underground. Absolutely love it, I've probably read it ten times.

Like Crime thrillers, as above Chris Kuzneski and Jo Nesbo but my real luv is for Historical fiction, especially books set in Italy. e.g. Florence during the Medici, Rome with the Borgia family or Venice in the time of the Doge. Add a bit of art in there as well and I am in heaven. I can recommend for those interested in getting into historical fiction or for those already into it, the following:

Just finished reading "Painter of Souls" by Philip Kazan - the story concentrating on Filippo Lippi and Thomas Masaccio in the 14th. century.

Probably my favorite of all in this genre "Signora da Vinci" by Robin Maxwell - a great story of Leonardo's mother, set in Vinci and Florence during the reign of Lorenzo Medici, just sensational.

You could also try 😀aughters of the Doge" by Edward Charles - set in the 16th. century, a story weaving in and out of three of the city's most remarkable women, with a touch of the artist Tintoretto.

All highly recommended.

Jo Nesbo won't let you down Steve, you don't have to read them in order but it works well if you do, sort of keeps things in the right order if you know what i mean, especially Harry Holes private life. Hope you enjoy.

The best I've read recently is The Tatooist of Auschwitz

Very good read if you like that sort of stuff

Any Escape book also is very good (POW camp escspes)

I purchased The Tattooist Of Auschwitz for my Sister In Law recently and she said it was a good book, so I will have to borrow it from her (she was a member of Amnesty International until just recently).
When I was in high school I read Henry the 8th and Wind in the Willows and loved both of them.
I recently read Animal Farm by George Orwell and found it really fascinating.
A while ago I read 1984 also by George Orwell and found it very hard to put down at night.

The Ghost by Robert Harris probably my favourite book. Was made into a movie, directed by Polanski. Robert Harris writes a lot of historical novels. 2 involving Hitler, one of which set in 60’s Germany, from the POV Germany won the war. Another book with a fictional account of Stalin’s death. And another good novel called The Fear Index about the 2010 flash crash.

Fatherland is a great book.
Another Robert harris book The spy and a gentleman is a good read until you realise it is based on a true story.

Officer and a Spy. About the wrongful conviction of Alfred Dreyfus.

I’d like to read the DI Vinci Code series.

Very good books both have a strong message

Other good reads are Stieg Larssons Millenium series (Girl with the Dragon Tattoo etc) and for a bit of good escapism, anything by Bernard Cornwell, but particularly his Sharpe series.

Agree with Stieg Larsson Millenium series - absolutely riveting.

Prefer Bernard Cornwell's Last Kingdom series as there are only 11 books, many more in the Sharpe series, I think about 24 from memory. Depends how long you want to lock yourself in for.
