BREAKING - MARSHALL LEAVING

I've been as critical as anyone has on Marshall over the years, so obviously I'm comfortable with him leaving.
He was a X factor player around 2005, went horribly til 2010-11 (I thought he'd win the dally m) and is now very burnt out.
in all, I think Marshall has gotten a pretty good deal the last 13 years or whatever.
No disrespect phyre, but 3 of the 4 achievements you mention have nothing to do with the tigers. All the golden boot is these days is for the best player in international games.
Btw, pretty sure Cameron smith has achieved all that…

Could the new Mrs Marshall want a flashier car that was available via the Tigers, and wanting to be kept in the style his inflated ego would demand,? And Mr Tauber must have hit the calculator and seen his cash cow shrinking dramatically. See ya!!!

Very sad day. Can we please stop all the knocking now and start the 'thanks for the memories' pages?

I for one am devastated. Benji leaving really means a new era.

Some of my best Tiger memories are of Benji's plays. They are etched in my brain.

In 20 years time we will talk about him as the greatest attacking weapon we have ever seen.

The greatest Wests Tiger ever.

I'm with you.

I see now ben Elias is calling for Benji to leave immediately.

Whats wrong with this fool?

I would hope the season and era can end amicably for all concerned, Benji the Club and fans.

You are very correct sir when it comes to this statement.
Robbie Farah will be sorely missed when he retires.

In all seriousness about Marshall the beer circles conversations will start with "**ON HIS DAY** he was the greatest attacking weapon we have ever seen"

Followed by a sullen moment where we put our beer down for a sec, and forlornly look into the bubbles on top, and _inevitably_ someone will say "but _man_, he had some shockers as well."

Someone remind him that Balmain don't exist nor do the Magpies. He's got money, why doesn't he help bail Balmain out or become a sponsor, then he'll be heard. Legend.

Christ…just saw Benji's manager on the telly. How old is the bloke: 90? Should be retired and having a cuppa with a blanket over his knees instead of playing the violin for Benji.

That's true, but it doesn't negate the fact he was a fantastic player. Also topped NRL try assists for 3 years in a row, which is either the equal or outright record.

Cameron Smith hasn't won a world cup.

Mate and you'd think a bloke like that might be telling Benji to remain a tiger for life instead with his life experience he is shopping around for Marshal for more dough..
Poor guidance i think .
If old mate Sheens was there Benji wouldnt be leaving

Had to laugh when Tauber said Benji had given 13 years of his life to the club (I thought it was 10 myself?). Funny thing is he didn't mention that the Tigers stood absolutely rock-solid by Benji when he was a busted crock with injury after injury. He needs to remember and acknowledge that.

A bridge too far, a day too long, they said. This is said to apply to someone that overstays his time. When you are at the top,you should know when to quit.

No one is going to be at the top forever.

For some like Marshal, when he got married he discover the comfort zone which did not help. It is part of life and nothing else. In the past, the true heroes realised that they were over the hill, thus accept a bit less to help impart his knowledge to the young ones. In doing that he preserved his esteem and form an even stronger relationship with the club.

It becomes a tragedy, when the manager tries to squeeze the last drop of juice out of the orange, and the player being unrealistic believed him. This applies to a guy like BENJI, who has shown in his conversation that he wasn't able to handle this.

Benji has been a great player, but he is only a shadow of himself when he was good. When he was good, his speed and actions were able to cover his mistakes. He is too slow now, which did not give him time to make the right decisions and caused match losing errors.

If this is the situation, where ever he goes it would be the same. By getting a bit more and not able to give in return will lose him lots more goodwill and esteem in the light of his fans and the general public. His media prospect would also be affected. If he is platinum now, he would be of lesser quality in the future.

Anyway good luck for the future Benji.

Pretty poor that Benji has been in hiding throughout all of this.
At least come out and show your face, make a statement, thank the club and the fans for standing by him.
Seems to be a petulant little child at heart unfortunately.

Spot on article imo

"BENJI Marshall wants us to believe the NRL and Wests Tigers have let him down. Maybe it's time Benji reflected on exactly what the game has given him.

The fame and fortune, opportunity and privilege.

If he's not careful, when Benji walks away he won't be remembered for the player he once was but a bloke who just didn't get how lucky he was.

When Benji's manager, Martin Tauber, did an interview on Sky Sports Radio on Tuesday it was as embarrassing as it was disrespectful to every fan who pays their way through the gate to watch Benji play.

It brought back memories of Mal Meninga's "rugby league has done nothing for me" line during the days of Super League.

Tauber was telling his warped version of events that led to Benji requesting a release from the final two years of his contract.

The question was put to Tauber whether the NRL had tried to convince Benji to stay?

"We had no approach in any way, shape or form from the NRL," Tauber said.

"I would have thought somebody of his stature and what he brings to the game in terms of bums on seats, merchandising and everything else, the NRL would have stood up and said, 'This is one individual we don't want to lose'."

No one wants to lose Benji but Tauber seemed to be forgetting this: It was Benji who requested the release from the final two years of his contract.

Benji was the one who went to Bali for a mid-season break and returned home and told Tauber he wanted out.

Now Tauber is turning it into the NRL's fault.

Not content with that, Tauber also went public with Benji's broken relationship with Mick Potter. Potter, as Tauber explained, is in Benji's bad books for having the audacity to drop him because he was playing like a busted.

Asked if they had a working relationship, Tauber said: "No, no, no, no. Everybody knows that. From the benching, when he put him on the bench that day. I mean that started an avalanche in terms of their relationship."

Tauber's right, it is no secret in league circles. But to publicly air it was disrespect of the highest order to the entire Wests Tigers playing group, which now has to walk on eggshells for the remainder of the season.

It's worth remembering Tim Sheens got sacked last year after he fell out with Benji.

Now Tauber is saying one of the reasons he wants out is because Benji doesn't get on with this coach.

It goes back to the handshake agreement Benji had with former chief executive Stephen Humphreys that was supposed to see his salary skyrocket to a reported $1 million a season until the end of 2017.

Anyone who has seen Benji play over the last two years knows there is no way the new management could honour that deal and do the right thing by the club and the fans, no matter how many bums Benji puts on Leichhardt Oval's limited seats.

Yet even still, the Tigers were willing to upgrade his pay to a reported $800,000 a season until the end of 2015.

This still didn't satisfy Benji. As Tauber said: "He feels let down. It's not always about money."

You make up your own mind on that."

Ironic that in Tauber's interviews he bangs on about Marshall's marketability, putting bums on seats etc but he never once mentions that he is worth keeping in the NRL for his playing ability and what he can bring to a team ON the field, not off it.
Benji's last couple of seasons have shown that he has all the marketability in the world but ultimately it is how you perform on the field that is your greatest asset and Benji has slowly but surely gone downhill massively in that key area.
Was sad to hear of him leaving initially but the more this crap plays out over time I am happy to see the back end of him and the self-centred circus he brings to our club.

In all reality, if he despises Potter so much, I for one would be happy for Potter to dump him from our remaining games this season. Coming out through his manager and airing all his dirty laundry in public is a really p#*s-poor way to end his time at our club. Would of thought he had a touch more class and respect about him than that.

I prefer to think of it as benji being badly advised, Tauber being the main architect in it all….I hope it all ends nicely, as nice as it can possibly end.
I have no doubt he doesnt really see eye to eye with Potter, I doubt he despises him....only 8 weeks to get thru all this, hope it dont all hit the fan -Im sure the club will do its best to see this occurs, tauber on the other hand...........
