Can someone explain Leichhardt to me?

League will go backwards if it ever gives up the traditional grounds. I know people go on and on about how the AFL gave it up and look at their crowds now. However Sydney is different to Melbourne, the transport is not as simple as Melbourne and some clubs have very sheltered fan bases. If for instance a Manly or Sharks were to play fulltime at Homebush they would soon be dead. What you want is getting the stadiums like parra, shark park, penrith, brookvale, ctown etc up to 25 k with modern facilities. Not sure how realistic that is. For what it is worth I think the WT's balance of home games is a great mix.

I'm a die hard Maggie- please dont stone me - but I wouldnt mind if every home match was at Leichhardt Oval.

As a kid every second weekend was spent at Leichhardt Oval, so I definetely have a soft spot for the old girl. But I also remember the days during the mid-late 1990's when we were lucky to get 9,000 people and the hill was so bare that the kids used to play their own games of footy up there.

So I am more than happy for the side to play there 3-4 times a year, and leave it at that.

That way its still a 'special occasion' when we play there, and as soon as the draw is released each year people circle the Leichhardt games on their Calendars and make a day of it. Thats why we can consistently get 18-20k people on a sunday afternoon.

If we went back to playing there 12 times a year, it would lose that 'special occasion' appeal.

Definetely one of my favourite places in the world.

I still attend at Leichhardt but the problem is my mrs ( and my mates) won't come because its unpleasant and we wouldn't drag the kids their due to transport and comfort.

There is the dilemma for all suburban grounds. For every person that loves attending suburban grounds, how many want to attend a NRL match, but won't due to facilities?

Its one thing like back in the day when all grounds were of the same sloppy average standard….it was the norm and no one had experienced anything better.

Nowadays there are different levels and standards of grounds, and many people expect more for their buck the big stadiums provide that the old grounds dont

We are seeing bigger crowds because facilities are improving, ease of access, comfort etc....times change and the older grounds are nearing the end

Interesting statement.

I would have thought how ur team is going on the field would have a greater influence.

Penrith have a nice little stadia there and its not helping their corwds atm.

I attended Leichhardt many times as a kid and remember watching some of the Balmain greats play, I still look forward to going to games there and attend the 4 each year however I can understand when people say they don't go because of the facilities, fortunately I have a good seat I'm past the hill, the sun in your face, the beer/food queues did that for years, years ago.

I'm speaking across the board, not individually
My statement was in relation to the crowds of the day when:

back in the day when all grounds were of the same sloppy average standard

Im sure you remembers the crowds of the 70's thru to the 90's
All the grounds were of a similar ilk.

Penrith has also been significantly renovated from those days

Let's not complain too much as its the best ground for atmosphere in the comp. you feel like your ontop of the players. A bit similar to grounds in England.
If we abandoned leichardt , we than need a super stadium of about 30k at parramatta. That way it's in between balmain and Cambo.

But for the time being just enjoy it and stop complaining. If you don't like going there, don't because another 20k will go I'm your place

And how can I forget those cold cans of beer. It beats the watered down rubbish.

Long live the old girl

If all games are played at the big grounds then the atmosphere will be rubbish for the regular round games. Stadiums too big, crowds too small. Very few games, bar finals and SOO, get crowds that make large grounds look even half full. And if you go to the footy mainly for the refreshments go to a pub or restaurant instead.

The reality of the modern RL fan is that no matter the ground facilities people would rather watch the game from their home.

This is why boutique venues such as Leichhardt still have a place.

The day we start getting bums on seats every round is the day we need to start the shift away

I honestly think going into the future the answer will be double headers at the big stadiums for the Sydney clubs

Tthe prices for everything will decrease by doing this also.

I'm not saying this will be popular , but in the end it will smartest option going forward

good idea.

Double headers is the only way the nrl could adopt the afl docklands/mcg model.

I still think that unless the suburban ground is not maintained, there is no reason for moving to anz or sfs except for the almighty $$ for already cash strapped clubs.

The thing is the State government have been quite clear that they will only fund 3 stadiums and leichardt isn't going to be one of them (and chances are either will Campbelltown) so we have to be prepared that eventually we will have to move. They are looking to build a new stadium in the West - with Liverpool where the dogs were going to build a real option and parramatta an option as wll (although it is close to ANZ)

Positives for Leiochardt
- History
Passion
Hill
Beer in Cans

Negatives
Transport- lack of and need to walk a distance
Quality of Food
Line ups for food and drink
Toilet Facilities
Lack of cover
Lack of pre game and post game venues for socialising
Lack fo screens when not facing gorund - i.e - food lines, toilets, etc
The Hill
Lack of kids facilities
Limited number of people

Lack of pre/post game venues for socailising??

What the??

There is about a million pubs within walkling distance of the place full of tiger fans.Thats one of the best things about it.

Many people would beg to differ on these points.
