Carney on the piss - different piss this time

Well he's not harming anybody? It's disgusting but sacking him is a bit too far.

Apparently the club have had enough of him anyway and they were trying to offload him earlier to get benji

How many times have I heard "he's not hurting anyone, why sack him?"

I suppose everyone has their own moral compass.

The strange thing is that it's probably the least harmful thing he's done considering it only directly impacted him.

Overall I'm conflicted about it. On the one hand it's brought the game into disrepute and has set a bad image to a man in the spotlight who, whether or not he wants to be, is meant to be acting as a role model. On the other hand it's just a stupid thing he's done to himself.

Either way I don't care that much. He's not a Tiger so he can do whatever he wants in all honesty.

He heard women like a guy not afraid to take the piss out of himself… Is my token effort.

Seriously though, who the hell does that?!

It's a shame as he'd seemed to have been keeping his nose clean (bad pun!) at cronulla but whether or not it's illegal or hurting anyone, the thing is he will always now be that psycho who did this.

There's not much more humiliating a thing you can do. I agree it wouldn't be a surprise to see him in one institution or another in future but I hope he doesn't go over the edge (eg; drugs) and become a (more) tragic story than he is now.

I think maybe he needs to get on some good meds...

THE Cronulla Sharks have sacked wayward five-eighth Todd Carney over his photo scandal on social media.

Board members decided in a telephone hook-up this afternoon to terminate his $650,000-a-year contract effective immediately.

Carney still had three year to serve on his contract. The club will release a statement later today to confirm his dismissal.

The image emerged on social media of a shocking photo of the star player in the toilets at Sutherland Shire nightclub Northies.

Carney could not be contacted today but Sharks chief executive Steve Noyce and his manager David Riolo are to have talks at lunchtime today.

The photo of Carney at the urinal went viral on social media websites overnight.

Furious club officials unsuccessfully tried to contact Carney this morning for a ‘please explain’.

A high-ranking official told The Daily Telegraph Carney was facing the sack over the incident at a time when the club is still looking for a major sponsor.

Carney had previously been sacked by the Canberra Raiders and Sydney Roosters for off-field indiscretions.

NRL officials have seen the photo and are in talks with Cronulla management about disciplinary action.

Todd Greenberg told Triple M on Sunday that he hasn’t seen the photo but said he has “heard a lot about it”.

According to Greenberg, the NRL has been in touch with the Sharks who are “discussing the matter right now.”

“Clearly I’d rather not be talking about these types of things,” Greenberg said.

“We’re never pleased to be talking about them.”

After the Sharks complete their investigation, the NRL Integrity Unit will speak with the club with a decision on Carney’s punishment expected to be handed down as soon as Monday.

“If there’s one thing that we’ve seen under Dave Smith’s leadership over the last 12 months is that we’ll do things consistently, and we’ll do it appropriately through the progress of the Integrity Unit and we’ll deal with it.

“We’re certainly not shy of making hard decisions when they need to be made but we have to do it with the fullness of the information that becomes available to us.”

“There’s not much use anyone jumping to conclusions today. I haven’t actually seen the photo. I’ve heard a lot about it this morning but clearly there’s a bit of work to be done before we start making decisions.

“Where we have to make tough decisions we’ll make them and we’ve clearly done that over the past 12 months.”

Even Carney’s biggest supporter, suspended coach Shane Flanagan, is refusing to stand by the troubled five-eighth this time.

Rugby league immortal Andrew Johns told Channel Nine’s Sunday Footy Show that Carney should not be sacked over the latest incident.

**“Surely they couldn’t sack him for that,” Johns said on Channel Nine’s Sunday Footy Show.

“It’s silly … it’s stupid (but) he is only doing it to himself.”**

The Sharks had only just found some on-field joy, coming back from a club-record 22-point deficit to defeat the Broncos 24-22 in Brisbane on Friday night.

The Sharks had gone the previous three games without scoring a point.

While we will not go into the details of the image, a response is expected from the Cronulla club and the NRL on Sunday.

This is the latest incident to impact Carney’s career.

The 2010 Dally M medallist was banned from playing in the NRL in 2009 after repeated alcohol-related incidents while playing for Canberra.

In 2009 he spent the year playing with the Atherton Roosters in the Cairns competition before joining the Roosters in 2010.

After two seasons with the Tricolours, Carney was released from the final year of his contract after he broke a team-imposed alcohol ban.

Carney joined the Sharks in 2012 — the same year he made his State of Origin debut for New South Wales — but his future now hangs in the balance.

AJ you are as fool as well…ANY employer with integrity would sack one of their staff for doing the same...I just cant stand how many ex players stick up for current players unconditionally...this boys school culture has to go!...and CH9 could do well to reprimand AJ for supporting what has to be the biggest tool in our game.

For those saying he hasn't hurt anyone, whilst no physical damage has been done to anyone, he has severely damaged the image of an already under siege club and no one wants or can afford to be associated with this behaviour from a player.

He's damaged his own image and that of his club. It would be a brave and probably desperate club to give him an opportunity. He's probably best of going to a European or Japanese rugby club and just getting away from Sydney and the NRL.

…not to mention the image of rugby league and the nrl...

I don't know about that. He's just a player and he didn't do it on the field.
Legally he did nothing wrong. In fact legally whoever took the photo and has shared it and everyone that has done so afterwards, has done wrong. It is therefore only a moral issue and that means there is no real right or wrong here. What some think as morally wrong, others may not and that doesn't make them right or wrong. It's just stupid and here's hoping he sees it as just that, and can move on from this. Otherwise this story could become really tragic.

Maybe he is an advocate for urine therapy? *Shudders at the thought*

Right or wrong, Morally correct or not, a good player or not is not the issue.

Do the NRL want an image that this guy has been projecting?.

I sincerely hope not.

He has had more than enough chances

I don't - should never be allowed to play Rugby League again in any grade.

There are players out there who have glasses their girlfriend (Bird), bashed their pregnant partner (Lui), thrown their ex-gf into a wall (Auva'a)… Probably a hundred other examples, yet are still running around every week in the NRL and living the dream.

So I don't think banning him from playing is on par with current NRL standards.

I would think the public shame and humiliation would be enough of a punishment, along with the fact his career in Australia is probably over.

Carney has a massive list of indiscretions to his name inluding setting a man on fire, leading police on a car chase while drunk and unlicensed, being legally banned from his hometown, deregistered for an entire year….and many many more. So this is far from an overreaction.

Also can we stop with the strawman argument that because people like Bird, Lui etc still play means Carney should be allowed to as well.

Again it would be a huge disappointment if the NRL allows any team to re register Carney

Smith should be sacked as CEO if it happens

We get rid of the biff , take a tough stance on so many other areas of the game and then allow this nugget back

LaT it's not a "strawman argument", it's the standards the NRL has set for its players.

Like it or not, this act is not the worst a player has committed (shitting in hotel hallways and filming pornos while driving are other incidents that come to mind), and must be treated in the same manner.

I'm not defending Carney, simply stating that by the NRLs own standards this act is worth nothing more than a fine and a slap on the wrist.

Carney in trouble again hey… In Gould's words " Oh dear, dear, dear " It did surprise me a little as he seemed to have matured the last couple of years and had his drinking under control. Obviously not. This latest incident is very humiliating, not just for him as it would follow him through out his life but for his family, especially his ever suffering mum. This might be the last straw that gets him to seek much needed help for his alcohol and other related issues.
