I respectfully disagree TY, because whilst the functions of coaching are the same across all teams, the nuances are not.
And that’s where your Bellamy’s, Bennetts, Robinsons and Clearys excel.
They look at the issues and see alternative solutions. There understanding of players is deep and they quite often see things that others do not.
It may only be a tweak here or there but they would make a difference.
Sure, they need good cattle as well, but whilst putting that together they can adjust the major floors to see an instant difference.
This was something that Ciraldo couldn’t do initially at the Dogs, coz I don’t think he knew how. Now he’s got better players it’s slowly coming together. As it would for Benji.
But my point is that if one of the Big4 had gone in, they would have had a faster and greater impact on the exisiting players. That’s the difference imo.
Yes.

Perhaps the most outstanding example of coaching nuance this year has been Flanno and his placement of Zac Lomax on the wing.

From factory player to marquee, origin hero, potential finalist in a stock squad, -probable Kangaroo in the space of six months.

Left to his own devices, Zac would be making up the numbers in the centres or warming the bench. I think he even got dropped last year.

Flanno knew what to do with him.

Do I need to have any expertise in “coaching elite athletes in a premiership sporting competition” to point out to Richo that Benji is struggling and needs help? I think the performance of the squad over the year emphatically answers that question.

We don’t know which side is going to turn up. I can cop losses, but not no improvement.

And you put words in my mouth, I never quite said i wanted to tutor him.

If I didn’t want to help him, I’d just call for his sacking. 23% success rate, worst in the comp. I’m not sure permitting him to muddle through with his current Benji program is working and indeed his assistants in their role might not be adding the value we or even Benji expected.

Feel free to write to Richo and back Benji to the enth-maybe you will get a response my friend 😎!!!

This is what you said in the post i responded to..”I’m raising mild concerns …not to harm him but to help him “… how am I putting words in your mouth ?im using the same word you have ?.

I specifically asked you to post the whole email again…as I couldn’t find it …and so I could understand all the context correctly ...i note you still haven’t done so in your latest ..whilst you are having a shot at me now …I’m starting to see why you aren’t getting a response with this attitude …

I’m sure Richo is getting plenty of unsolicited “advice “ on how to improve the team…I doubt he is going to be taking advice from people he doesn’t know on the matter ..Im pretty sure he is also aware of the teams won/ lost record and the fact the team is running last…

I will hold off bagging Richo untill the end of season , but I think he has failed us supporters, and I put it down to letting papa go without a replacement, we need more forwards not some young forwards who are years away from been a 1st grader

There have been some limitations about what he could have done this season….not onboarding until January he has inherited someone else’s mess ..and a very poor team with limited opportunities to upgrade mid season..

But no one has complained harder than me about the Ice situation ..and the over reliance on young juniors and the lack of outside talent being brought into the club for next season …

I’ll wait and see what develops ..nothing else I can do really …but for someone who is only going to be here for 4 more years ..I would have liked to see a bit more urgency upgrading the squad for 2025 …it’s not a 10 year plan Richo …

Assuming that Lomax honours his contract and ends up at the Parra-sites next season, do they play him on the wing or in the centres and is he happy to play wherever his new coach wants him?

If I was him I would be very grateful for what Flanno has done in re-inventing him and I would be sorry I was leaving to go to what I would describe as the unknown.

No chance of Lomax being grateful to anyone for anything. He’s a tool of the highest order.

It’s funny how the dogs can buy anyone they like and just move people on , now the dogs where on the bottom just like us , but they just keep buying players , our blokes need to get of there arse and get some movement or next year we will still be in the same spot , then we may never get off the bottom

Lipoi Hopi whom was set to move on from the game and look to other employment was encouraged to continue playing and was resigned on a third tier Ron Massey cup deal of $1200 a week Has since played first grade and been upgraded to a new 2 year deal (doesn’t specify top 30 however).
They don’t immediately sign their juniors to Top 30 contracts like we do.

And where is his team on the ladder?….

All this crap about coaches is just that…we overrate the role of a coach in the W/L column… it’s about the cattle you have rather than the coach… put Robinson or Bellamy in charge of this WT team and they would be at around the same position on the ladder
Are you saying a team doesn’t need a coach? A coach can’t add value to the team?
I disagree. Coaches can make or break a team.

Hah come off it. This is rubbish.

For those who think that success is only attained by having the cattle, I give you one word..Angus. Follow his career from being dropped to Reggie’s, to being awarded the Wally Lewis medal, and tell me no coaches were involved in his form reversal?

A rortsters player. Really 😂

Not to discredit his achievements or show a lack of faith in his abilities to execute our short-term plans, but I believe Richo might need to delegate the task of recruiting players to replace those leaving and to strengthen the squad. This should be a top priority and may require bringing in someone highly skilled and successful in recruitment (though I’m not sure who that might be at the moment). I also feel it is equally urgent that Richo’s attention shift to finding the right coaching staff for Benji and focusing on assisting Betsey with the club’s Junior Pathways framework.

Our junior talent pipeline needs to be the best it can be, which includes having top-notch coaches at that level. It’s really disappointing to see that we’re losing promising juniors.
As a so-called development club, effective recruitment and a strong junior development system go hand in hand and are both crucial for maintaining squad depth and ensuring the efficient development of future talent. But right now, nothing suggests we are on top of things in this area (juniors).

I posted two team lists a few weeks back and was surprised to read a lot of forumers’ comments on the number of juniors playing out of position, rather than in their natural positions, and how the development of some of them is being hindered by this. It’s things like this that concern me, as we should be better at managing this by now given our history with losing juniors to poor succession planning.

There’s a pretty strong argument that playing young players in different positions to what they’ve grown up playing actually improves them. You get a better understanding of the game overall and you learn what your teammates go through in their own position. If a young prospective NRL player is concerned about playing out of position in lower grades, I’d call that a red flag myself. I always found the guys who said yes coach, and got on with their job were the ones going places.

I can see both sides of the arguments tbh. Yes it improves skillset and utility value but unfortunately due to our poor depth, it's probably optimal to have them hone their skills in their natural position incase we require their services.

I know that was a poor loss yesterday but the younger players really do have a dig. My only real complaint was they tried too hard and rushed or forced plays.

We are on the only path available to us, be patient with the youth and gradually improving elsewhere.

We have to accept the errors from the young players, it’s just a shame some of our seniors aren’t playing great.

On my earlier point, I think once you’ve worked out their best position and that they have the can do attitude, then you play them in the position that benefits the team most.
