Charlie Staines #262

Thought he has looked more natural at fullback than Daine, probably due to him being a fullback all the way through until he moved to the wing in Penrith’s system. Question marks if it’s a long term solution but for me he has shown more capability than Daine in just about every area.

1 try assist
2 line break assists
2 offloads
23 runs for 238m
2 kicks defused

I think you re-sign him for sure. We have to work with him but it's worth a shot. He is fast and goes hard. He has a passing game that isn't great but I assume it can be worked on. If he bulks up a bit and adds to his game he could be a real good player.
And of course, every time he has a good game other teams start to take an interest. Would offer him a good 2 year deal, no more.

Moses caught out staines mutliple times with kicks leading to tries
I guess Daine does the same thing so I worry it's our coaching.
They only one that was directly his fault was the cartwright one, and it was a very good kick from Moses. I'm not worried about his positioning, and it will improve with time.
In my eyes, he's earnt the 1 jersey for the rest of the year. He's a really tough and brave young player, I'm glad we gave him a chance, and should be talking about locking him down for a few more years.

That's as much to do with kick pressure and line speed as the fullback himself.

Tigers put very little pressure on Moses all game, so he was free to run at the line and kick short, which is very difficult to defend if you are back-pedalling and you give the half that much time.

Fullbacks are then supposed to cover the kicks that sometimes make it through the line after your primary defence has rushed the kicker and pressured the runners, not after the fullback has all day and after all of his runners have gone around your backline and through into the backfield.

You nailed it, next to no real pressure on Moses, needed to be harassed every time he was going to kick. Attack the problem at the source, not after.

It's like criticising the goalie for not making enough saves when the defence continually lets the attackers dribble into the box.

Sure he could have done better, but Moses should not be allowed to put such short-range pinpoint kicks in. We managed to stop Moses' short kicking game almost entirely in the second half, but he was able to put some lazy passes on to Maika Sivo after our defence fell apart.

Give him an extended run. If his defensive positioning and ball playing doesn’t improve, give Tupou a go

Them Edwards stats without the tries.

I doubt we’re able to hang onto him.
There are very few clubs that would want him as an expensive winger and fewer clubs who would be interested in playing him at fullback.

I'd say if we want him we'd get him on a reasonable contract probably in similar range to what he's on.

And it's players like Staines, who don't have many options but still have some speed and quality that we should be looking at. We need to add a lot of these players to our slow, poor work rate and low IQ squad.

Credit to the club though that players they have bought have all been good this year. Rare for us to buy so well. Even Wakeham is a good depth purchase.

I’ve got no idea what he’s on? We would have paid overs, Laurie is on $300k? So Staines would be on something like Edwards’ say $500k?
At 22 he’s had 40 odd games and only a few in his preferred FB position.
He has an ability which has made some players reach greatness..speed off the mark.
I think he will prove to be good value with a few more games.
