THE feud between Test coach Tim Sheens and controversial Manly star Anthony Watmough escalated days before last week's Four Nations final.
The pair clashed last year and struck an uneasy truce when Watmough won selection for the tournament. But when Watmough was left out of the team for the final, he exchanged angry words with Sheens, holding nothing back.
Greg Inglis was another player said to be reluctant to play under Sheens. One insider said that Inglis could have played despite his shoulder injury and he added that some team members found being in camp under Sheens' disciplined watch a real grind.
The rocky environment in the lead-up to the Four Nations final clearly did nothing for the Kangaroos, who lost their third final against New Zealand in the past four tournaments. The past two coaches to lose a final, Ricky Stuart in the 2008 World Cup and Wayne Bennett in the 2005 Tri-Nations, failed to hold on to their Kangaroo jobs.
