Chris Lawrence to snub Dogs, stay Tiger

Surely now Inglis has gone to Souths they can't afford Rowdy,he has just played for his country,so hopefully he thinks his future is here and signs long term.

Unfortunately I have little comfort that any team is abiding by the Salary Cap - Souths were crying poor a little while back.

I think we need to wrap up the key players and be accepting when we loose some of the 2nd teir guys

The Salary Cap is a joke Spartan…. It only exists to keep poorly run football clubs financial or to keep traditonal NSW Clubs within a saturated marketplace in a National Competition...

As Jason Ryles said, "the NRL is a pimple on the bum of world sports".

Hurry Up Wests Tigers... Sign Chris Lawrence for LIFE!!!

Wouldn't surprise me if not long after the 4 nations we see Lawrence and Sheens signing a new contract with Wests Tigers. Lawrence will probably want to stay for aslong as Sheens does.

I have long held suspicion about Souths since Rusty arrived, but the $150k a season Burgess contract just confirmed to me what I thought all along,I can't believe Schubert is that stupid.

I know. Normally it's only the Rorters Schubert turns a blind eye to… Who did he used to play for again? Oh, silly me! That's right :imp:

I don't understand what you are getting at - Schubert played 7 years at the Roosters, **6 at Western Suburbs** and 2 with Manly.

He was named a 2nd rower and vice captain in the Western Suburbs team of the 80's. Played in the Western Suburbs reserve grade grand final winning team of 1981 and coached reserve grade for Western Suburbs in the late 80's.

If he held grudges it would be with the Roosters and Manly, as it was Fulton who dropped him to reserve grade at the Roosters and got rid of him from the club at the end of 1980\. Fulton was also coaching Manly when Schubert was there, and again dropped him to reserve grade. Schubert returned to Wests in 85 and played 5 more years, being top point scorer between 86-88.

Back on point, Lawrence is a smart cookie and delayed contract negotiations to see if he could crack the rep teams. His value will have increased, but the Tigers would be made not to make him a great offer. I think/hope he will sign with the Tigers soon. He is going to be 'the star' centre of the game imho over the next 5 years.

I am not endorsing Team Tiger's view - but it should be noted that Schubert returned to Easts in 1993 as Marketing Manager and served as acting CEO of the Roosters for a period in 1994.

So not only does he have much stronger corporate ties with Nick Politis and Easts than he does with Wests or Manly - he also knows intimately how they juggle their books and recruit talent!

In 1994 they bought the likes of Sean Garlick, Scott Sattler, Tony Iro & Brian Smith - as well as poaching an under contract Nathan Wood with 18 months remaining on his Balmain contract for 1996 (he was subsequently released a year early)!!

New additions in 1995 aside from Wood (when Schubert would have directly overseen Roosters recruitment) include - Phil Clarke (from Wigan + GB Captain) - Terry Hermansson (NZ international) - Graham Mackay (Aust & NSW Origin rep) - David O'Donnell - Andrew Walker and Barry Ward to name a few.

That sort of recruitment does not happen under a salary cap without some creative accounting!

Maybe not; but in those days the salary cap was not the same for all clubs - it varied quite significantly depending upon the club's 'circumstances'. So what may have seemed like extravagant recruiting to poor old Wests and Balmain fans may well have fitted within Easts cap.

IMO the salary cap is a MUST. Without a salary cap we would have a handful of strong clubs (maybe four) and the rest would be on struggle street and many would go to the wall. You may call it bad management but the fact remains their is only limited dollars in the market place and its a real struggle for many clubs to generate the necessary dollars to balance the books. As you said league is only a pimple on the bum of world sport and even in Australia is well behind the AFL in attracting coperate dollars.

Okay the salary cap needs some tweaking and should be much more transparent but the game will die without.

In my long time watching rugby league Chris Lawrence is the best young centre I have seen. The way he hits a gap is a joy to behold. The game against the Sharks at Leichhardt this year his try just before half-time was the turning point. He is a match winner.

I have a lot of faith in our current administration team but the number 1 priority must be to sign Chris Lawrence to a long term contract. He is very marketable much more than than GI, you would think we should be able to line up many 3rd party deals for Chris Lawrence and have him receive top coin but only a small amount under our salary cap.

Yes, Chris is signed for 2011\. I wouldn't expect to hear anything in the immediate future as Chris is

holidaying in Thailand with Robbie at the moment.

IT might be wrong but unfortunately they do have a bucket load of money and are desperately short of centres - if we don't sign him soon we may not be able to match parra in the future.
