Coach Benji

Cause me ego is bigger than my boom box!!!!

Sorry JL. Couldn't resist. Unless- its true - at the end of the film. He could be the real deal. Everyone loves happy endings.

Like all of us here, I'm hoping Benji has a much better year. I reckon he would have learnt plenty from last year especially. (We better hope so).
He is obviously extremely intelligent which I'm sure doesn't hurt, and by all reports, he has a great rapport with the players - that are still here!
Sheens once said you don't know if you can coach until you've lost 4 in a row. So by that metric, Benji should know himself if he can coach or not.
By the end of this year we'll all know.

Benji has to be given this season and judge him after it...
He is still only a rookie coach and this year will be his to show the NRL world his worth as a future coach...
He seems to have a happy and talented squad ..They also have to perform or they could make Benji look poor as a coach...success always goes both ways.players and coaches must all gel..

Your knowledge of rugby league is impressive Tuck, I would have to spend half a day researching easts history to produce those stats, if he makes the finals this year I place him in the highest echelon of coaching ability and not just a good roster produced coaching result.
Tucker is the stats guru on the forum.

Very lucky and absolutely blessed with the rub of the green.

Shaping up to be a very testing year for him.
Huh?
Chooks get pinged more than most

I think he's a great coach who's earnt his position... Like Bennett and. Bellamy cleary good. Players wanna go to good coaches and good coaches have the luxury of choosing good clubs... Rookies don't.
It must be earnt

I do not think Benji Marshall should be judged until season 2026. Benji is still picking players that suit his game style plan. There has teen a lot of dead wood to clean out. Give him 2 years to get his list right and then some time for the players to develop rhythm with each other, then judge him.
I’ll give you a million to one odds if you think Richo doesn’t think Benji should be judged this season.

Would love nothing more than for Benji to become a great coach. The signs have been questionable so far but we'll soon find out if he can coach.

Hahahahaha, that really made me laugh.

I am all for seeing Benji get a fair go. Allowing a clean slate after his debut as both defacto/new coach in 23, and giving him plenty of slack to change the playing style and squad in 24, his probationary period is well and truly over.

The time for accountability has rightly arrived.

Haha yeah....
"hey Jarome, your last coach took you to 5 grand finals in a row and helped you to win 4 of those on the trot, gifting you every success you ever wished for, resulting in huge reputational value to your brand which you will be cashing in on for many years to come. Whats next for you?"
"yeah mate, I want to leave this highly successful club and go play for the bloke who has won the past 2 spoons...."
Every success....except the elusive 5th GF win...

Disclaimer: tongue in cheek comment for the easily triggered out there.

I thinks it is beyond stupid tonsack Benji with a year to run on his contract especially if there are so many players that are coming here because of him.
Isn’t 2025 year 1 of Benji’s 3 year contract as head coach? He had a two year contract as assistant coach for 2023-24. My understanding is he was given the head coach role in 2024 as effectively a ‘caretaker coach’ as the club failed to provide a mentor to develop him into the head coach role (what coach worth his salt would a take a 1 year contract knowing his assistant would take his job the following year). The 2024 wooden spoon will be on Benji’s record but I think he will be judged on his performance from this year onwards.

If when Benji or Richo decide ,Benji is not up to the job ,sure it will be swift n amicable. Every sign on we got this year talked Benji up - doubt those words come with a $ sign on bonus. .Benji may just end up the longest serving coach we have had - He wont be replaced this year, no matter how hard the dooms dayers want it to be

I don't think Jarome Luai or anyone with half a brain would accept that he was "gifted" success. I'd say there was at least a little bit of effort on his part in accomplishing those premierships and it didn't come in a box wrapped up under an xmas tree.

Luai is here for a new challenge, for big bucks and the fact he was a Tigers fan growing up. Do you wanna go back to pinning your hopes on Madge and Jackson Hastings? Do you want May or do you want to sign James Tamou again? Honestly...

If you can't win on the field, and you can't win in the player market, what chance do you have in catching other teams?? Having Benji as coach has been an absolute godsend for our capacity to recruit marquee talent unlike any time in our history. It's the circuit breaker we needed for our recruitment paradox. No club in history has ever signed a half that has won the last 4 premierships in a row.

It's pearls before swine around here sometimes.

He could just walk in rnd 16 wave his hand around ,but the bro cuzzies have it sorted. In Benji they Trust

TBH I think we have next to no chance of making the 8 regardless of who the coach is. Hope I'm wrong but I just don't see the quality or depth in the forwards or backs. Spine is good though. If we snagged a decent second rower and centre in the next few weeks that calculation may change.

I'd be keeping Benji for 2026 if there are clear and obvious signs of improvement both in terms of results and signings/squad. If there is no improvement this season, it becomes hard to justify keeping him. Don't have a specific number of wins in mind as that can be dependent on injuries/suspensions etc, but need to see proper improvement (not just one extra win and coming 16th for instance).

Got to be given props for recruitment if people believe part of being a good coach is to attract players - probably the strongest this club has seen in years and close to the strongest of any club going into 2025 season - Luai Turuva Hunt May Skelton Bird - despite the triple wooden spoon. Not a bad haul.

I think this is formally Year 2 of 3 with one more to go.

I think there is a lot of upside in Benji and his Head coach approach (Like Bennett)

We need a better defensive coachs/system
