@Anon-lurker I trust Madge's judgement however he does have some form in selecting injured players.
Whilst at Souths he apparently played GI despite being injured. It didn't go down too well.

Yes, well known. A lot of players were unhappy.

I like Madge, but this is poor form if true.

Matterson gave us everything every week. He is 24 and not the type to stop unless his body tells him he is hurt. A player who tries as hard as Matto is entitled to some goodwill on this.

And Robbie Farah played with a broken leg. Say what you will about Farah's ego, but the bloke would at least do anything to try and help his team win.

Completely different mate.

It was Robbie's last game and he has a lifetime to recover now.

Matterson carried us weekly, all of us said that during the season. You do not ask a 24 yo to play hurt...not one who clearly gave everything. He is not soft, blokes saying that he is are ridiculous. We all saw him carry us and he barely had a moment off. How many forwards played 80 mins almost every week in the NRL? Hardly any, but he almost did.

Kind of agree mate, but Robbie played busted quite a bit during his career not just last Sunday......

And I am sure Matto did also. He is not the type who would ask for a game off unless legitimately hurt.

>How many forwards played 80 mins almost every week in the NRL? Hardly any, but he almost did.

Clubs ask it all the time. Players are playing hurt all the time. Maybe The Lurker's info is BS, but it's not just the last game, Farah would always play any match he could take the field.

Chris Lawrence had his face smashed to pieces and tried to get back ASAP.

If Matto was seriously annoyed that Maguire pressured him to play in pain, he still did very well, so I don't know what "preventing him from playing his best" means. Matto reckons he can go to another level again? If so, no reason to release him!

But, also, imagine asking the coach for a rest in the last 1-2 months when we clearly need to win every game possible.

How many forwards played 80 mins almost every week in NRL 2019? Oodles and oodles, not even including hookers.

Matto averaged 76.2 minutes in 2019. Others
Jake Turbo - 78.4
Josh Jackson - 72.7
Briton Nikora - 79.7
Kevin Protcor - 79.5
James Fisher-Harris - 76.4
Joel Thompson - 77
Kenny Bromwich - 76.4
Shaun Lane - 77.5
Curtis Siro - 75.5
Elliott Whitehead - 78.9
Tariq Sims - 78.1
Felise Kaufusi - 79.1
Corey H-N - 72.9
Gavin Cooper - 79.4

Basically every club has at least one, which makes sense given the current reduced interchange.

Agree. The bloke has some history spending significant time on the sideline with the Roosters from severe concussion effects. Hopefully, it had nothing to do with that otherwise Madge has some explaining to do.

I think this story has some legs. I can't remember what game it was, but matto was pulled off for the last 20 which I thought was odd. That could have been Madge doing his best to give him a rest.

I know Matto was integral to our success, but we did have a pretty handy back-up in McQueen playing NSW cup. He could have had a week or two to recover.

If true, hopefully Madge can admit fault, apologise and promise to be better going forward.

Or, if true, Madge can say "that's what we need of you mate, you are one of our best players". Why should the coach be apologising for asking players to extend themselves?

Are Tigers supposed to be a tough team that does whatever it takes to win, or do we go about apologising to players for asking them to exert themselves? Exactly what type of club are we aspiring to be?

There's this persistent criticism of Madge that he "lost the players" at Souths and needs to learn something or other about his expectations and man-management. Yet, by all accounts, he learned this side of coaching from Craig Bellamy, who is the greatest coach of all time. So then we appear to be asking Madge to not try to emulate Craig Bellamy.

Madge has been removed from 1 team total, so it's a sample of 1. Maybe he trained Souths too hard or maybe they got lazy.

Personally, Madge has proven he can take an average side and fashion them into contenders. He got a premiership by doing this. I really don't care which players fall by the wayside if he can achieve this for Wests Tigers. If he can get us 1 premiership and then be let go for being too tough after 5 or 6 seasons, so be it.

It would be good to hear what Matto has to say on the saga. Everyone could be barking up the wrong tree, although highly unlikely.

I guess the club and Matto will come to some agreement with a confidentiality clause and we will never know. I say it’s very long odds we will see him at the Tigers next year......the good thing..I am usually wrong

Well if he does go we need to ensure we receive a couple of outstanding young talents who we can nurture for a couple of years until the next club comes calling. If Parra want him back, Ethan Parry and his younger brother are two big, fast and skilful centres, Might be worth a trade.

If that’s the problem, well seesh. Reckon a fair few blokes around the country show up to work from time to time feeling a bit sore and in need of a break... most of us get on with the job. Chin up.

Great post mate and you're 100% right. I take back my comment.

Sounds like it was all about money. Madge said NO release. Club looks to have leaked this via Michael Chammas and now damage control from the manager brining in issues with the coach, playing wounded, psychological issues.

It’s a beat up of the highest proportions never made any sense from the players perspective as he had 2 years left on the contract.

What people forget is that manager gets a percentage of the contract and if you can not get more clients to get your revenue up whats the next best thing to do get your clients to earn more so you get more

@Geo come on Geo let us Tin Foilers have our fun what else is there to do of an evening in the off season other than wait for you and Happy to exchange pleasantries on the forum?

This forum is unreal.

"It's up to the coach to get the best out of his players,"

Coach gets best out of player.

"Coach is working players too hard, he needs to apologise."

Sticking with the Tin Foil theory.

I was catching up with a mate of mine today who is a salesman and mean card player who claims he can read body language said he was talking to another mate of ours who said he spoke to the mother of a knights player and they are looking for a centre not a back rower so I’d like to change my original hypothesis and now deduce that Esan is going there.

The theory is just me but the rest of the story is true.
