I'm sick of this club being a walkover. They took the hard line with Cleary last year and I expect the same with Matterson. Everyone in the league believes we are a soft touch, it has to stop. For these reasons I am prepared to cut the club some slack if they do stick to their guns and hang on to Matterson if a favourable resolution for him to leave does not eventuate. We have lived up to our ends of the contract so we hold all the cards. The reverse happens when we want to put a player of lesser demand on the market and rightfully so as we don't live up to our end of the bargain. It has to start working both ways.

If the club is reading this, hold your line and force a favourable outcome and if not, hold this guy's career to ransom.

I totally agree .......but again you got to ask why a 24 year old is looking for his 4th club

And why we agreed to sign a player who wasn't happy being played out of position at Parra , wasn't happy at playing position at the Roosters ......

Says more about him than us. Make him accountable.

Takes two to tango and we have two left feet and about as much rhythm as Blocker Roach

How much is Greenburg as No.1 in the NRL being paid a year. Note that I didn't say who by. I can say it is top pay for not taking important action and sounding like he is in charge.

Back on Matterson, the only way the club should release him is where there is significant net benefit for us. The way they played out Ivan last year worked out well for us. We hold the cards, he is contracted and he is wanted so whatever comes in the way of negotiation will favour us if another club wants him badly enough.

And just on the topic of contracts and players being "rightfully" able to seek more, if you engage a builder to build a two homes for you, he builds the first to a good standard & in accordance with the terms of the contract and he comes back to you and says "since I did a good job, can you pay me double now for the second one?" What would you say to them?

But when the customer becomes too demanding in the builder's eyes and wants to change the original plans completely from original deal

Matterson may have thought it was going to be a 3 bedroom single garage and bathroom under Cleary and then it ends up becoming a 200 unit skyscraper under Maguire .....

Forget all the stupid analogies. Bottom line is he was signed to play football for WT for 3 years. What Cleary did or did not promise him is irrelevant.

@tigerbalm the Pom made a statement earlier confirming the news Sadly

Did I miss something - I thought the Pom said he will be released if we come out in front otherwise he will remain with WT.

He.

Signed.

A.

Contract.

I just want to highlight that he signed a very good contract. A mate at work who is a Manly supporter said that he is getting paid $400k+ next year. This isn't a guy on a minimal contract.

Another thing I don't really get is the value equation of a move.
He would have to get upwards of $650-750k per season for all these shenanigans to be worthwhile.

Is he really going to get a new 3 year deal worth that much? Who is going to pay him that? The Eels? Surely they don't have the cap space. Can only be the Titans? Eek.
So he sold his soul and forfeited any chances of winning a premiership to go *there*?

Scratching my head here!

I just think he totally underestimated the damage this did to his reputation on two fronts: (1) to his own character *and* (b) as a player who will respect a contract. Any new employer would have to be pretty damn wary.

He's as good as gone from the Tigers now. He was destined to become a rep player here, a captain, a leader, a cult hero.
And now he's gone and done this.

Sadly, he has been ill-advised by another greedy manager.

Foolish.

Don’t discount the possibility of the Eels or Bulldogs making a play for Matterson and both teams will most likely be finals bound next season. If he ends up at the Titans...well he is an idiot then.

@pawsandclaws1 as well as RCG and 750k for gutho . Add to that Sivo getting homesick in the off-season to the tune of 500k . And Blake would be on a quid as well .
Seriously though , people had Arthur as first coach fired this year , now all of a sudden after 1 good year they’re on the up and up . I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again , if Moses is who your hopes and dreams are hanging on then , you are in for a long , cold punch of reality to the face .
I can only imagine his thought process this time last year was like , “the eels ... haha they’re crap “.
Now all of a sudden he’s got that depression that is only cured by an eels jersey and 800k .

Moses showed what he had to offer on the weekend against a quality side. It's one thing to cripple bash Brisbane who were never going to do anything in the finals to actually doing something against one of the sides that will likely take the whole thing out.

I know we've all raged about it but apart from last year where the 8 was spread out over 2 comp points it is rarely the case and there is a glaring discrepancy in performance between the teams that finish in the top 4 versus the teams below them. They really should look at having a 6 team finals comp as whoever finished 7th and 8th did not deserve to be there (I'd be saying the same for us,) and were fodder for the other teams.

we can be salty for as long as we want. But im of the firm belief we should of kept moses and let brooksy go. But we had no choice.

Most impartial fans generally agree. RE the weekend no half in the comp would of played well behind a pack that was easily dominated. He goes as his forwards go.

Simply put Mitchell has always been the more dynamic/complete footy player- right from his days as a rhino and sg ball to u 20s covering FB; wing; halfback and 5/8th. Brooksy has always been the more 'stable' player. would be nice if the nrl had a system for lower teams like the tigers to retain their juniors...

Didn’t you watch the game against Storm, he wasn’t worth a brass razzo.

I think most are missing my point

Matterson is to blame ....Wests Tigers are just as much to blame ...read my other comments .......this will be the 3rd time Matterson has wanted out of a contract ....what we didn't see it could be a possibility at the very least if there were any issues

Just to clarify this. The club is to blame because they expected him to show some integrity ? Just state that you are right can you explain what the club could have done differently.

Again he has two clubs due to his unhappiness at playing conditions ....this will be his 3rd club if he gets his way ....he is still 24

You make risky signings ......you risk getting burnt

When will we learn

Whether it is injury .....attitude .....possibly both ...we continue taking risks

Would you like me to go through the list in the last few years

Matulino ..chronic knee injury ....Jamal Idris attitude injury .....Matt Ballin .....Reynolds injuries ......McQueen .......Tim Grant injury ......Edwards .....Lolohea ......Rochow

My major concern isn't actually Matterson.

It is the precedent of what happens if a player wants out of a contract and stirs up trouble to make it happen. It will only serve to erode whatever confidence supporters have left in what a contract means, how much attachment they can invest in players and ultimately hurt lower-ranked clubs who are trying to build something.
