Back on Matterson, the only way the club should release him is where there is significant net benefit for us. The way they played out Ivan last year worked out well for us. We hold the cards, he is contracted and he is wanted so whatever comes in the way of negotiation will favour us if another club wants him badly enough.

And just on the topic of contracts and players being "rightfully" able to seek more, if you engage a builder to build a two homes for you, he builds the first to a good standard & in accordance with the terms of the contract and he comes back to you and says "since I did a good job, can you pay me double now for the second one?" What would you say to them?

Matterson may have thought it was going to be a 3 bedroom single garage and bathroom under Cleary and then it ends up becoming a 200 unit skyscraper under Maguire .....

Well then we got an excellent year out of a player signed by the coach we sacked, and the club he went to is paying part of our new better coaches salary -, please also note the quality players who have left the club our ex coach went to.
Win win for us considering the twat of a players future is in our hands now to decide what we want to do with him.

I think you are being naive - all clubs take risks and the lower the club, the more risk you need to take to get back to the top.

Think about the risks a millionaire needs to take vs a new small business owner.

Manly have taken a bucket of risks with their 2019 roster (Curtis Siro, Suli, Brendan Elliot, Dylan Walker, signing Elgey and blooding Cust, giving DCE $1M), plus a big risk on the coach, and it worked out not so badly.

I chose Manly because they are an example of a club that took a large number of risks that have, just recently, paid off. They've missed the finals 3 of the last 5 seasons, including 2 sacked coaches.

Now whether or not Manly has an overall history of success or not is irrelevant, because you can't be comparing Manly of 1990 or 2000 or 2010 to Manly of 2020. It's not the same dudes doing the work, it's just the badge that's the same.

If Matterson was to head off anywhere, I'd be glad if it was the Titans. Couldn't bear to see him running around in a Roosters/Eels/Dogs/Penrith jersey. Not like Titans are going to get that much better and compete with him anyways. Wasted career I reckon
