Confirmed: Matterson released from Wests Tigers.

G'day @Fletch: I'm sure the ability of Ryan Matterson would have shown through [as long as he ate all his porridge] this year even if he had started with the Roosters CC side. Therefore he would have been in the top side in place of the bloke? they pinched from Souths.
The Roosters now realise they stuffed up in letting him go and want him back.
IMO he isn't the one causing the current hassles.
Madge has proven to be a very hard taskmaster and apparently not a very good man-manager, unlike the current Roosters coach who obviously has the ability to get the best out of his players without the hard edge that Madge has.
How do we know Matterson hasn't had his head down and worked the way Madge wanted from the start of this season?
For Madge to come out and say "you blokes didn't make the finals, so I'm getting the whip out and make you pay by flogging you for another month to change your attitude" to me is NOT good man-management.......unless that was known would be the case well beforehand.
You just can't change common practise because Madge says so.
IMO if the teams attitude wasn't right during the season proper Madge would/should have noticed this, so it was Madge's responsibility to change it well before we are no longer a finals contender, therefore Madge is at fault here, not the players, and particularly not our best player Ryan Matterson, who we have all said on here gave his best. :fa-smile-o:

@happy_tiger maybe he should sign up for touch footy

Maybe Madge needs to get some people skills

It's got nothing at all to do with cash and that a handful of major clubs have gaps in the lock and second row rosters due to retirements or wanting to return to the UK.

Maybe it to a degree , but lots of players look to upgrades mid contract when form warrants it

Madge has history of this ...look at the players who have left even a short time after winning premierships

He said he had changed , yet when you listen to Marshall on NRL360 they train harder/faster at training than match day

That might be fine for some but others don't want to train that hard ...especially the blokes putting up big numbers in attack and defence

Players like Matterson quite often have shorter careers than other players , mainly because their bodies just can't sustain that workload over long periods of time

@MAGPIES1963 I don't know if Matterson gave his best here, no way am I certain of that. He was our best, sure, but that's two different things. Careful in saying "if" this happens then this "should" have happened, so i think "this". You don't know if Madge didn't say to them beforehand they would be training longer. You don't know Madge isn't a good man-manager. We don't know Madge didn't identify earlier when the team was performing poorly that the attitude wasn't right. All these assumptions.

I certainly hope Madge can lift the team up to be a competitive force, but so far, results-wise, we are the same. Cap still a mess, haven't improved on the ladder, haven't signed anyone of note,

It really annoys me that this is being played out in the media, whatever is going on, as it seemed we had stopped that from occurring recently but obviously not. This sort of rubbish dogs our club and pretty much guarantees that we will remain as bottom dwellers. Whatever is going on, I hope Matterson pulls his head in, and the club comes out stronger in all this. Though with our past record, we'll probably cave in, release him to the bloody Sharks or Penrith, and sign as a replacement another dodgy three-quarter who won't make first grade at another club.

It’s common place for clubs to upgrade the contracts of players. It’s usually done by upgrading the final year with an extension.

Matterson was a depth/fringe/utility at the Roosters, who spent a large portion of their premiership season on the sideline. He had a breakout final series coming off the bench when he returned.

His form continued and this season at the Wests Tigers was his best ever, and the rugby league community has taken notice.

He might be feeling morose witnessing his former club and teammates putting together another tilt at the title. But he may never of reached the same heights he did this year if he’d stayed at the Roosters and continued to be a depth/bench player and would have been on even less coin.

My advice to Ryan would be to put your head down, work hard and buy into what Madge is doing - the money and rewards will soon follow.

Suggest Ryan does not want the tigers money and did not sign up for Madge hard approach to footy and wants back at a Ivan, Kelly softer approach to footy.

Also mention he considered himself a half at partamatta?

Hmmm this story, if true, is really disappointing. Sadly Ryan is beginning to sound a bit like a perennial whinger when things don’t go exactly the way he wants them to. Despite Madge’s best efforts to increase his earnings, improve his game and elevate him to Origin level he is still not happy Jan! Sounds like a spoilt brat to me and we don’t need anymore of those that’s for sure, having already rid ourselves of a few over the past couple of years.

Of course, I don’t know the real story behind it all, but something is obviously not right. I had a high opinion of Matterson as a player and a man, but I’m starting to think he may not really be the ethical, hard working good guy I thought he was.

Just like we thought Ivan was a good person you never really know what’s happening at the club.

Very true Tony! I had forgotten about Ivan and his good guy image turned sour. For some reason we seem to bring out the worst in people! ?

When are we going to hear anything from our spineless management? This type of thing can cause friction within the playing group...
Our new coach and highest profile signing already at loggerheads.
This club is dumb.

How can anyone be in support for Ryan when every complaint he's brought forward sounds nothing but ungrateful and selfish.

our supporter base is so fickle man. We talk about not having an emotional enough coach. We talk about accountability. We talk about toughness and muscling up. We talk about players being fit and strong.

In comes madge :fa-check: :fa-check: :fa-check: :fa-check: :fa-check:

Some supporters "oh he is too tough" MAry mother of jesus

Find the right players if matto isnt one put him in reserves or trade him for some one that is

If Matterson wants out and there are cashed up top clubs wanting his services well guys who has the most $$ wins .. he is contracted for 2 more seasons an origin stand bye and is hot property so if you want him pay up!
He has done well at our club but it is still not good enough... the ball is in the clubs court have to play hard ball and get from it as much as possible. Greedy and privileged the younger generation leave a lot to be desired !

I haven't heard Matterson say anything..jurno's and hacks with their versions which differ depending who you read..Yes..

I bet there are a few guys at Penrith who wish they had a harder approach to their footy this year.

Give him a fortnight, tell him the truth about what his role will be and why you think that's good for him, then let him decide. If he wants to stay then talk money.

That's true @Geo it's still HIS manager that is ultimately responsible for bringing us into the limelight...yet again.

I'm sick of seeing players crap on our club.

This is what happens when you continually remove or lose coaches .....happy footballers become unhappy footballers when the style of coaching and training changes

I can understand Matterson's view totally , he needs to be able to show off his ball skills and running game to make the next step ....because of our deficiencies he needs to play a total power game ...which isn't going to benefit his career long term

It this really a fair comment and do you (or we) have any idea what it is that Matterson supposedly wants. Do we have any idea if the club has discussed this with him ? What should we do about this ? Are all the players unhappy ? If not why not ? Is Matterson just another spoiled brat ?

You know what, if he can't cope with Madges intense style maybe he should look at him self instead of blaming the club... Madge is trying to instill a storm like intensity here and I love it, but some of our high paid players can't cope. Says more about them then our club sooks. They should have to work hard for there money and the club should enforce the contract.

I don't pay my hard earned to want to put up with mediocrity and Madge is trying to change that. We need to change how this joint is viewed as it sounds like he only wanted to come here for Clearys holiday camp.

Him and Twal are best mates and there are rumors of Twal to Penrith.

Likely all linked together.

Slothfield and Hooper are just jumping on board and running with it, but Chaamas and Prozenko (SMH) are legit journos and do not write without basis. Prozenko obviously knows what is going on.
