What is this guy's caper?

I say we don't grant him a release until every other side has used up their full cap then say see ya later, stuff him!

He's a slightly better than average player imo, certainly not irreplaceable and totally overrated by most of the forum.

Would I like to see him pull his head in and want to be a major part of our future? Yes absolutely, but if he's going to carry on like he is, there's the door see ya later, if he doesn't want to be here on the money he's contracted on then he doesn't want to be here, if the only reason he stays on is if his contract gets boosted then just let him go he's not here for the right reasons obviously.

He's far from being a superstar, he should be grateful he even gets to play Rugby League for a living and gets decent coin for doing it.

The greed and just the direction this whole sport is heading is really causing me to really lose interest and by what I'm hearing it seems I'm not the only one.

Matterson is not overrated. He was one of the best forwards in the NRL this year. His numbers were Taumalolo-like.

You can't keep an unhappy player in reserves. Fans forget about the human relationships in clubs. Players do not appreciate seeing their mates held back and it doesn't do well when you are trying to attract others. It creates disharmony and we get no value from it.
The system is flawed managers, players and clubs know it and until the NRL do something about it some will continue to take advantage of it.
The dumbest thing we can do is make this about our club because it is not. Klemmer, RCG, DWZ, Norman all players who recently broke contracts because they were "unhappy". It's called self interest.

Of course you can. The team mates know that it is that player's decision, they control their destiny and could very easily be playing NRL if they decided to act in a professional manner. Players would lose respect for a friend and team mate acting in such a selfish and childish manner.

Klemmer needed out of Sydney for family reasons (which is different) and RCG, DWZ and Norman were all unwanted by their clubs. Matterson is not unwanted. That's the difference.

There you have it you are looking at it from a fans point of view detached from knowing him personally.
It's not about what reason they give for being unhappy it's about the relationships they have with in the the team if you force them to stay somewhere they don't want to be.
You can't have some of the team siding with Matterson if we make example of him and play hardball. I can guarantee he will have players/friends that will sympathise with his situation and that causes a distraction that the coach does not need.

I think the players realise that he would be getting paid 425k to play NRL and have the possibility to do so. If he refuses to play NRL then what can WT do? I can't see other players being upset when it is exclusively the player's decision not to play.

These are all hypotheticals at this stage of course as none of these events have happened yet.

There is a reason coaches move on players that are unhappy no matter who they are and how much they are on.

Huge loss if he leaves, I can't see a better replacement either.

Years ago played touch footy with his old man down at regents park, guilfoyle oval near the station, along with his uncle who coaches newtown, and a host of former 80's players from the wests area, (berala, rego, lidcombe , chester hill, sefton, birrong...etc, john & Jamie cogger, mick and alan neil, terry donnellan, Geoff Sutton Geoff dillon, baa and Jason alchin and billy johnstone used to play too on the odd occasion, just t to name a few, great blokes and his old man paul matterson was a champion bloke, hope ryan soughts out whats going on, not for one minute am I bagging Maguire but he really was on the nose with the rabbits players when he departed , and whether or not its garbage apparently it was the majority of the squad, (probably garbage) hope they can sought it out.

This is a good read.

Read it last night. Very good read.

Good story.. In a previous post on the Matterson story I said that it would be good to know the FULL story, and I did go on to say that I was disappointed with the guy, but I guess we don't KNOW the full story, so perhaps I need to know that before I say I'm disappointed in him, he may have some private matter that is causing him concern if so we need to give him a break:relaxed: but naturally we want him to stay if and when he can sort this business out:+1:

Time for the NRL to step in and grow some balls and address these so called player managers... We need to stand firm here on this one unless we get some kind of trade so we can save face..

That would mean Turdberg showing leadership honesty and open administration something he has always avoided, acting like an ostrich is more like his style

The clubs and coaches are just as bad as the managers. No one respects contracts.

I will be cancelling my membership rollover tomorrow. Want to see how this plays out

I’m doing the same. I sent an email to WestsTigers AFTER I rolled over my membership stating how disenfranchised I felt as a member. I listed many ways that I felt the club showed no respect for members. I also listed ways to turn members into advocates for the club. I received back an explanation that simply justified everything they did.
Now, yet again, we are in the middle of a crap fight. This garbage never happens at Melbourne or roosters.
I’ll always support the club and I’ll watch every game but I’m showing my disappointment by pulling my membership. Sad thing, the club couldn’t care less.

Doesn't rolling over the m'ship mean you are renewing?

If so, did you say in your email that you are opting out?

I initially opted in. I’ve since said not to renew my membership

Sad Steve, Think we four may end up doing the same.

I don't get you guys. Cleary backstabs Tigers and now Matto might be doing the same, and your response is to withdraw membership and penalise the club.

I don't know what you expect the club to do. Damned in all directions if your key signing suddenly wants more money and kicks stones to get his way.

"This never happens at the Storm or Roosters". Well, firstly, go support those damned clubs if that is the benchmark. Secondly, no, teams currently in the top 1 or 2 clubs tend to not have too many upset players.

But actually contract nonsense happens at every club, that's unfortunately part of the deal with sports. Folau backstabbed Melbourne to sign a 4-year deal with Broncos after his debut season. Justin Hodges sought out a mid-year transfer to Broncos from the Roosters in 2004. Ryan Cross strung the Roosters along for a while then defected to rugby. Will Chambers defected to rugby after the 2009 GF. RTS turned down a Roosters deal to take on a lucrative one at Warriors. Rarely do players publicly weasel their way out of deals, but they "backstab" clubs all the time.

"I'll still support the club and watch every game", but, you know, I won't part with any money, to show Tigers how disappointed I am. That's such a disappointing outlook. I understand if money is a problem, but to quit on the Tigers when they need support the most. I mean, bandwagoning is easy, easy as pie to ride with the successful team. But the club needs strong supporters when times are tough.

Apparently we need tougher management and a tough coach, but supporters can just quit.

How dare you call me a quitter! I’ve supported this club for close to 50 years. Who are you to pass judgment?
I have communicated with this club many times in an intelligent, articulate and well thought manner trying to offer well thought through suggestions in how to be a better club. Not arrogantly, not rudely, not forcefully. But nothing changes.
We lurch from one disaster to the next. I’m sick of it. I’m sick of finishing ninth! So, as I cannot make a difference through critical dialogue I am left with only one option - show my frustration through walking and that’s what I’ve done.
You can continue with the moral high ground - you’re choice but I’m making a stand. I’m letting my club know I’ve had enough.
If you don’t like it - fair enough but don’t call me a quitter. I’ll still be there and I’ll probably go to every game as I have for flipping years - but I’m canceling my membership as I have no other way to get my point across.
You’d walk a long mile to find a bloke more attached to this club than me and I won’t walk away. But I’m not paying for membership when it’s not valued and the club continually disappoints.

But aren’t you quitting membership?
Get offended all you like about Jirskyr’s post but he’s right...you’re quitting.

And the club has only been around for 20 years.

NRL reporting West’s Tigers will grant Matto permission to talk to other clubs, with the Titans at the forefront. Says a player swap maybe Brimson could be an option

Just posted by Michael Chammas. The Money Grabber is free to negotiate - has a relationship with incoming Holbrook at the Titans. Lets make this work in our favour now that he is as good as gone....

Titans eh?

Well I was wrong, its not about being at a successful club, its only about the $$$. Gross.

Yep. Found this interesting from the article

The Tigers are aware of interest in Matterson north of the border, however won’t agree to releasing him to any club unless they reach a favourable outcome.

The club is in the process of drawing up a hit list of targets to replace Matterson.

The joint venture is on the lookout for a fullback and would entertain a swap deal for AJ Brimson.

The Titans, who declined to comment on potentially signing Matterson, are trying to free up space in their salary cap for next season, with several players being shopped to rival clubs.

The option of placing a transfer fee on Matterson’s release has also been discussed.

The Tigers showed last year, through the way they handled the Ivan Cleary saga, that they would only release someone if they benefited from it.

That came in the form of a $250,000 compensation pay-out.

@WT2K Sounds good. In this case though, a payment like that would do us no favours, we need value for money salary cap-wise. Hopefully a player swap. I can't see Arrow coming in a swap, unless we are paying a bit extra (Which could happen should Mats get retired or another player moved on).

Bottom line, I would avoid this player agent, like Isaac Moses, no further dealing with that scum. Guaranteed he's in this up to his greedy eyeballs.

@Telltails If any player is unhappy to play with us, and is on a contract, and is a player we actually want to keep , leave him in 2nd grade, until they are prepared to play 1st grade again. Otherwise you will get more players just opting out of contract for any sort of minor reason. Sooner or later they are going to realise the value of getting a contract anywhere else diminishes if you spend a year or two in 2nd grade, which also shows other clubs that you have an attitude problem. Put the onus back on the player not on the club. Also gives the chance for a younger player to show there worth in first grade. Garner is proof of that. We currently have Mcintyre, Seyforth and Bradley all at 100Kg that on our books that have had a chance yet in first grade , give them a go.

Hope so. No release unless compensated properly.

his management also have Luke Garner on their books...
