Roosters make last ditch play to snare Connor Watson

The mole

A SHOCK new contender has emerged in the battle to sign star Roosters utility Connor Watson - the Roosters themselves.

For months, Watson - player of the tournament at this year’s Auckland Nines - has been locked in a two-way battle between Newcastle and the Tigers for next season.

It was taken for granted that Watson would be on the move on the assumption that he would struggle to get a starting spot at the Roosters in 2018 following the signing of Tigers and Blues Origin fullback James Tedesco.

But I’m hearing the Roosters have made a late play to keep Watson - and the talented 21-year-old is also getting cold feet about quitting such a strong club to join a battling one.

My spies tell me Watson has spoken to Trent Robinson in recent days and the Roosters coach is reluctant to lose the classy utility

Watson could still play a key role at the Roosters in 2018 as a number 14, coming off the bench to play in the halves or at hooker.

He hasn’t decided to stay as yet - but the Roosters are definitely back in the hunt for the 21-year-old from Dubbo.

How is it possible to be in the running for a player you already have under contract? What a dumb way to word an article.

Your either on the bus or your not!!. Couldn't care less if he doesn't come to us. Sounds like a tedesco jr IMO!

Don't need this guy - let the Rorters keep him.

With a salary cap of 10-20 million they won't have any trouble fitting him in.

Dont want him.
If he comes itll only be so that he stays in Sydney at the highest price. Not the type of player i thought Ivan was after for his bus.

I'd be surprised any player who wants to be a career #14, which is what Watson would be at the Roosters. Tedesco, Keary and Pearce are not old uns.

Connor is going to be a busy boy he's been confirmed with the knights, tigers, and roosters now.

Not only that with a Super Saturday next season he'll be playing Fullback for the Wests Tigers in the 3pm game… 5/8th for the Knights at 5.30pm and Hooker for the Rorters come 7.30pm..

I really don't understand how this league is fair at all and it makes me sick.
Teams like us keep developing players to only lose them to the big clubs but it rarely come back the other way. They don't lose players until they are past there time and have to sign with clubs like ours to cash up retirement. E.g is the Sharks win the comp last year and have a great squad however keep signing quality players and resigning heaps of others also. Dugan would not come cheap considering he believes he is worth a million a season. Most clubs lose players after winning a comp but not them.
Roosters are another club - Sign Teddy from us and still manage to resign all there other top quality players without the NRL even thinking something is suss.. Now if they keep Watson that is just another quality player they have. Try and tell me there is NO brown paper bags or partners getting massive paid jobs to work 1 or 2 hours a month somewhere.. Maybe our club need to do this ??

People can call me "sour grapes" and I know our club has been run bad for a while but I am really not enjoying watching the game anymore as its always the same clubs that make the finals.
We all sit on this forum just hoping our club is even in the conversion for a quality player and most times its just there manager using us to lift the price or the size of the Brown Paper bag..

I have said it for a long time now I believe all players should be paid through the NRL and there should be a cap on TPP to players.. Any money over the cap should be put back into facilities and juniors.

I do believe we are on the right track though and have full faith in Coach and CEO..
