The US has hit 1 million infections. 1/3rd of the worlds total cases.

Yeah it's terrible. A lot of other countries are still increasing their numbers at a massive rate as well.

I know our political leaders are generally terrible, and they cop a lot of stick as they should, but we are so lucky right now to be in Australia. And I don't know how big a part, but our leaders probably have some contribution to our numbers being where they are.

For once the coalition listened to the experts and not the murdoch/fox regime thank goodness.I can only hope that they do the same in regards to the greatest danger we face in climate change, sadly i believe they will listen to vested money interests rather than science.

Great point Jad, mate. Nothing like an immediate crisis to get the stimulus flowing and people really understanding the reckoning behind capitalism that’s been talked about for years... I also sadly believe that when it comes to the long haul/playing the smart game... money comes 1st

So the governments projection model was out by over 300x, and these are the same people we're relying on to lift this social distancing and get the country going again.

Meanwhile, 11 deaths from the Anglican nursing home and counting. Imagine losing a family member and not being able to hold their hand in reassurance.

Legally, access to the data is a free for all for law enforcement agencies.

A "nah they won't" at a press conference isn't good enough for me.

??what a crack up ... I am sure you think your under the radar .. reality is they now everything about you and know exactly where you are and what you are purchasing. Do people really think they have privacy anymore ! There are more apps running on your phone now that track all your movements and thoughts ?

So if they know all that already, why do we need to download the app?

It will help capture those cases of Covid19 where the source is unknown. All the app does is note who you have been near. It doesn’t track where you have been or anything else for that matter.

So if someone you have been near tests positive to Covid19 health care can let you know that you have been in proximity of the virus. If you test positive for Covid19 health care can let those people you have been near know that they have been in close proximity of the virus.

Pretty straight forward really.

How can they know who I've been near if they don't track where I've been?

If you don't know where I've been, then you don't know where I've been, so you can't know who I've been near.

Seriously? it stores the phone number of anyone you have been in close contact with for 15 minutes.

When was the last time (during this circus) that you spent 15mins within 1.5m of a total stranger?
This app is a joke

You do realise that the app is for when restrictions are lifted? Try reading before making uninformed comments.

I don’t think the issue is the government having your info , as , they already do .
The real issue is how , when , why , what , has access to this data , moving forward , as it’s totally within the realms of possibility that they on sell it to someone you don’t want to have your data. (Already proven your have happened , by governments and large social media giants like Facebook).
Maybe you don’t want to be belt fed Oporto ads , as , you get a chicken salad every day . Or you have something embarrassing like erectile dysfunction, and the algorithm ran in the background whilst you were having a conversation, and now youre seeing those ads.

Or more nefariously , your data has been bought by “Shell Corp” which is a shell for a shell for a shell for the Russian government , that’s now belt feeding you negative articles on your favourite social media platform , reinforcing what ever political agenda you may have , to influence you sub-consciously moving forward, to rig elections , change political movements , begin polical movements , sway society etc.

It’s extremely naive to call someone naive , about being careful about who and what has access to your data.
All of what I just said isn’t conspiracy nonsense by the way .
It literally was exposed when Trump, who is a convicted Rapist and Felon got elected . Wiki leaks has large sections about it . All companies on sell your data to whoever is willing to pay whatever price .
Sam Harris has at least 4 podcasts dedicated to this on his Waking Up podcast . He’s a neuroscientist by the way , not a conspiracy nut .

Of course you have to be willing to read something you were not searching for in the first place or be easily led by what you read
Some people read articles with an open mind
Some people have a pre conceived idea and won't be swayed
We all have minds of our own and should make decisions based on how they effect us
And we shouldn't always take what we read as truth either

If something is that important to an individual then that individual should really research that subject on their own accord without being led astray with pop up adds or re directions because that is who your data has been sold to

I don't know about you but I am not easily led astray
But I can see how someone's Data can be used to direct them in a certain direction
Most of those people tend to be either gullible or just followers

Mate it’s not about that. That’s the thing. It’s not about changing your ideas , to believe in theirs , it’s about destabilising the society and creating division by repeatedly reinforcing negativity , by hammering home each persons own Echo chamber , to then begin to slowly plant ideas , that don’t seem at all unreasonable.

The reality is i don’t need to prove anything. Do some research on the facebook inquest in front of congress last year. You may think your immune , but how do you know anything you read is truth, it could all be a huge lie. (I don’t believe that just hypothetically speaking)

I don't have Facebook
In fact this forum is the only social media site I use and participate in
I am so against Facebook and all the other similar sights as I have personally seen what these can do to families and friends
People put way to much personal information on for the world to see and that is dangerous for many reasons
And that there is the problem
Use these sites wisely because you just don't know who is looking
I see this covid tracking app as something completely different
It is there to help protect us as individuals and as a nation 1st and foremost
If it's used for matters other then those intended then I / We can deal with that later.
Delete it
Change your phone number
Simply don't read the garbage
What ever it takes
The fact is no one can force someone to read an article
That choice is yours to make
It is also your choice whether you believe it or not
If people want to protect themselves from social media
Simple
Don't use it

You’re looking at it , as a social media issue , it’s not even the case . It’s a data collection issue . It doesn’t matter where that data comes from , someone will pay a premium for it . Facebook was an example that’s out there for all to see . It could be the Pokémon go app you play with your kids . Or the Iconic app you buy your clothes from . Or the real estate app you use to buy a house . Etc. Unless you go into every single app and see which trackers are on , you’re not going to know . Even with the way the trackers are named , you don’t know which one does what .
You can view it however you want . You could call it the Care Bears hugathon cuddle app , and it doesn’t change the fact that it collects data on you and then , they openly use that data to formulate a database , to suit a certain gain. Like I said , many governments have been caught imbedding trackers in apps and places they shouldn’t . Sometimes it’s international espionage, other times it’s your own government.
It’s kind of irrelevant . You shouldn’t smash someone up for saying , you know what I’m just not going to participate. It’s their choice and IT IS a privacy issue . It just is .

**Or more nefariously , your data has been bought by “Shell Corp” which is a shell for a shell for a shell for the Russian government , that’s now belt feeding you negative articles on your favourite social media platform , reinforcing what ever political agenda you may have , to influence you sub-consciously moving forward, to rig elections , change political movements , begin polical movements , sway society etc.**

I know this is a little off course but to reply to your statement

I see this covid tracking app as something completely different
It is there to help protect us as individuals and as a nation 1st and foremost
If it's used for matters other then those intended then I / We can deal with that later.

We have been disagreeing on a lot of issues around covid 19 but this is a spot on post mate.

I hate to say this but if you are using any electronic form of payment, ie Credit or Debit card then you are being tracked. When, where and what you purchased. If you have any parcels delivered to you, you are tracked. There are many more scenarios that have nothing todo with social media. There is no escape, you will be on many databases. You simply cannot live off the grid by default in 2020.

No you can't because data has become a commodity and everyone who has any information about you on sells it. The algorithms that google, facebook etc use to gather information about you and then on sell that information or use it to target advertising and articles to you are a concern though. I don't use facebook etc, not only because of the data they collect but I don't see them as essential. I also got over people I hadn't spoken to in 10 years contacting me, if I haven't spoken to you in 10 years, there is probably a reason for that. Mate, Australia and NZ are about the luckiest countries on earth. We dodged a bullet - does NOT mean it was overhyped. Just in the last 24 hours alone there have been almost 80,000 new cases worldwide. And that's just officially documented ones. Of course the death toll in poorer countries is many multiples of official figures - have a read about Ecuador for example.

Even wealthy, developed countries have had their health systems pushed to the brink.

Exactly. If you connect to the Internet you are being tracked. If you use a Google search you are being tracked. If you use Gas or Electricity you are being tracked. For anyone to think other wise is naive. Not a great fan of Facebook myself for the reasons you stated but I still use it. I have family and friends in far away places and it is a pretty good way to connect and keep in contact. It even manages to give my a laugh sometimes “BIN Isolation” anyone? There is still a wealth of information available through it to make it worth while for me, for now.
