All the people saying Covid isn't deadly it's the second deadliest pandemic to date.

Bubonic plague and Spanish flu have this more than covered.

Bubonic plague killed 50 million people, Spanish flu killed 25-50 million as well.

HIV/AIDS killed 25 million plus as well.

Relatively COVID isn't that bad an illness but lot's of people have been killed. I look at the figures in Florida with really good health care but dumb policies. They've had over 50k deaths with a smaller population than Australia. Our leading cause of death is heart disease related illnesses at about 18k per year. So without really good policy settings that we've had COVID probably would have been the leading cause of death over the last couple of years.

It's crazy stuff including the pandemics that have happened in the past. I pray (and I'm an atheist) **that we don't see anything like this again in our life times.**

We will. This is only a mild kick starter to what's coming.

I remember reading a scientific research article from about 30-40 years ago where it was expected that more pandemics would happen as larger groups of people moved into jungle areas due to expanding populations and exposure to the new environment.Like global warming the conservative establishment poured cold water on the idea, the thoughts on global warming have made a 170 degree change since then with just a few noisy dissenters.
I doubt if it will happen (pandemic) in my lifetime but i am sure it will as larger populations will increase the risk imo

It’s the high density populations that are the risk of starting the next pandemic. The planet is overpopulated already and it’s not going to get better anytime soon unless some economic miracle happens and we no longer rely on population growth to feed the worlds economies.

The new NSW Premier is apparently pushing for an extra 2 millon migrants, crazy stuff. We need to start measuring economic performance against GDP per capita instead of total GDP. Increasing GDP by increasing the number of people is just a charade, on top of being destructive to quality of life and the environment.

I think it's more complex than this. Migration should be seen as a positive so long as there are certain guardrails and this is mainly to do with terrorism. It's definitely not a charade.

I prefer a multicultural society. I also think as rich wealthy citizens of the world we should be providing opportunities to people who come from less fortunate backgrounds as us.

But we are already a multicultural society, agreeing in principle with multiculturalism isn't an argument to keep endlessly growing the population. And when it is being pushed by big business lobby groups, you can bet it has nothing whatsoever to do with culture or helping the less fortunate. Anyway sorry I am going way off topic, sorry I'll leave it at that.

Immigration has nothing todo with those less fortunate than the current residents of Australia. It has all todo with growing the Australian economy.

Growth is the only measure used for a successful economy and in Australia’s case that means more people. More people when our water supply is already at breaking point during droughts. Droughts that will only get worse as the effects of people made climate change (yes we caused it) accelerate in the coming years.

Overpopulation is the root cause of the majority of current day issues. Until we are brave enough to address overpopulation and population densities continue to increase across the globe the next worse than Covid pandemic is coming.

Wow this thread has dropped out of everyones consciousness, which I take as a reflection of the importance people are now putting on it. Should be an endorsement of the path forward I guess.

Two weeks after re-opening and numbers dropped under 300. Great sign.

Far from it, the type of rifle shooting I do is very specific, even if I had the chance to own an AR (and I have shot them), I wouldn't even bother - they serve no purpose outside of the miltary or LE and I'd be all for banning weapons like that.

That could be taken any number of ways Happy...but getting back on point, it's good to see case numbers in NSW still hovering under 300 per day while the vaccination rate continues to climb.

I should be getting my Pfizer booster before Christmas hopefully.

Should we really be getting boosters before other countries have had the opportunity to secure the safety of their own people?

Not for me to say. The US are throwing away millions of Pfizer doses because their citizens refuse to get vaccinated - now that seems like a monumental waste to me. Some countries have no interest in being vaccinated, we do thankfully.
