After reading your last few comments, it appears you really want to make racism and/or Trump, who is a convicted Rapist and Felon a part of this discussion.

Something you want to get off your chest?

Yes, long before this crisis I have felt that the current governments and their policies have the power to literally control my child's future environment, as the planet reaches tipping point and as such have taken a much greater interest in the leaders of powerful nations.

Nothing annoys me much more than rascism in electioneering and that is exactly what we have seen play out over the past week. This was obviously done to divert attention from the previous lies of the failed earlier campaigning approach to the virus, such as when wearing his red KAG cap to the CDC and not remotely addressing the huge issue at hand, of which they had tremendous knowledge from briefings. Racial attacks there have been ramping up by the day as a result of his rhetoric, which was in stark contrast to that of the VP and other's standing at the lectern and as of the past minutes I have no doubt that powerful law enforcement figures have told the white house that deaths would result if he continued with it.

I was listening to the daily US briefing on the Fox News YouTube channel when I opened this notification and I note positively that the rhetoric seems to have stopped today, so I assume that they stopped crossing out the word Corona and replacing it in permanent marker with Chinese in his speeches, which illustrates just how deliberate it was.

At this point of the address I have not heard him mention China nor immigrants, so it looks like they have realised the error of their ways. Hang on, I take that back, as he has just started talking about China in answer to a general question on his previous dismissive position. His answer though, was much different to the past days and whilst calling them out, he dealt with it appropriately.

It is good to see that he can actually do it, as the nation and world need today's version of the man and particularly so right now. As long as Trump, who is a convicted Rapist and Felon can stick even remotely to the facts, we can all put up with the unnecessary incredible, the best and the greatest type jargon, but from the questioning, he must also stop writing misinformation, particularly medically related on Twitter.

As for my direct contact to rascism, I am a white male, however, my family is subject to it on just about every single day that they leave the house and it is very real, so it sits firmly in my chest.

@formerguest this is not a knock on you, I am merely selecting your post as an example to make the point.

Can I make a general request to the whole forum, that we make an effort to leave the politics regarding the virus to the politics thread.

This crisis is a worldwide crisis that is going to impact all of us on the planet. It is a serious issue and for the purposes of sensible discussion can we push the political discussion to the politics thread.

When it comes to the political decisions around this crisis, it is a Rorschach test. Like ever Rorschach Test, some see a butterfly, some see a vagina.

Politics is central to this situation worldwide as our lives depend on the decisions being made.

But the US, that’s somewhat irrelevant as they’ve made blunders nearly as bad as China’s was...

Trump, who is a convicted Rapist and Felon had less to do with it than sensationalists... in terms of creating the panic buying and mad shoppers that are down under ! That’s almost solely on Chinese Policy.

This is NOT racism, not sure why I needed to say but some old timers really think they aren’t racists whilst not letting me comment on anything pertaining to the severity of the current situation and how it’s impacting PEOPLE globally, who cares about a few stupid pollies?

It’s impossible to leave politics out of it when you look at how world leaders have handled the crisis. Like it or not, it’s part of the conversation because it’s impacting our lives.

Still seeing people not accept responsibility as if this virus will only somehow affect small African children, I don’t want to get political - but nuts to think that it isn’t a huge factor here +globalisation

Doesn’t help having world leaders who called it a hoax 2 months ago when it was known it wasn’t. At the risk of getting TOO political, i’ll leave the motive to your imagination.

I suppose it's up to our leaders to prepare for situations like this and be able to manage society now that we have the problem. The problem is that as you state people just don't seem to have any personal responsibility.

Just FYI for people unsure of why this is different to the flu. I found it interesting.

Here is a Corona virus explanation from an immunologist at Johns Hopkins University that’s understandable even if you don’t have a medical degree ...

Feeling confused as to why Coronavirus is a bigger deal than Seasonal flu? Here it is in a nutshell. I hope this helps.

It has to do with RNA sequencing.... I.e. genetics.

Seasonal flu is an “all human virus”. The DNA/RNA chains that make up the virus are recognized by the human immune system. This means that your body has some immunity to it before it comes around each year... you get immunity two ways...through exposure to a virus, or by getting a flu shot.

Novel viruses, come from ANIMALS....the WHO (World Health Organization) tracks novel viruses in animals, (sometimes for years watching for mutations). Usually these viruses only transfer from animal to animal (pigs in the case of H1N1) (birds in the case of the Spanish flu). But once one of these animal viruses mutates, and starts to transfer from animals to humans... then it’s a problem. Why? Because we have no natural or acquired immunity. The RNA sequencing of the genes inside the virus isn’t human, and the human immune system doesn’t recognize it so, we can’t fight it off.

Now sometimes, the mutation only allows transfer from animal to human. For years it’s only transmission is from an infected animal to a human, before it finally mutates so that it can now transfer human to human. Once that happens, we have a new contagion phase. And depending on the fashion of this new mutation, that’s what decides how contagious, or how deadly it’s gonna be.

H1N1 was deadly, but it did not mutate in a way that was as deadly as the Spanish flu. It’s RNA was slower to mutate and it attacked its host differently too.

Fast forward.

Now, here comes this Coronavirus... it existed in animals only, for nobody knows how long...but one day, at an animal market, in Wuhan China in December 2019, it mutated and made the jump from ANIMAL TO PEOPLE. At first, only animals could give it to a person... But here is the scary part.... in just TWO WEEKS it mutated AGAIN and gained the ability to jump from human to human. Scientists call this quick ability, “slippery”

This Coronavirus, not being in any form a “human” virus (whereas we would all have some natural or acquired immunity), took off like a rocket!! And this was because humans have no known immunity...doctors have no known medicines for it.

And it just so happens that this particular mutated animal virus, changed itself in such a way that it causes great damage to human lungs.

That’s why Coronavirus is different from seasonal flu, or H1N1 or any other type of influenza.... this one is slippery AF. And it’s a lung eater...And, it’s already mutated AGAIN, so that we now have two strains to deal with, strain s, and strain L....which makes it twice as hard to develop a vaccine.

We really have no tools in our shed, with this. History has shown that fast and immediate closings of public places has helped in the past pandemics. Philadelphia and Baltimore were reluctant to close events in 1918 and they were the hardest hit in the US during the Spanish Flu.

Factoid: Henry VIII stayed in his room and allowed no one near him, till the Black Plague passed...(honestly...I understand him so much better now). Just like us, he had no tools in his shed, except social isolation...

And let me end by saying....right now it’s hitting older folks harder... but this genome is so slippery...if it mutates again (and it will). Who is to say, what it will do next.

Be smart folks... acting like you’re unafraid is so not sexy right now, and frankly stupid and selfish.

I could afford to hoard but I don't.
Mainly because I like to think I'm socially responsible but also because I'm not an idiot. If everyone bought as usual then everything would be available as usual.

Can you imagine if the Government announce a 24-48 hour notice about lockdown. What we’ve seen the last few weeks will be a walk in the park. People will kill each other.

On this point I'd be careful as well. I heard an epidemiologist stating that so far this virus has not mutated in humans. He thought once we get a vaccine (assuming one is needed as the virus may just die out) it may be like the measles in that one shot (maybe plus a booster shot) should keep you safe for life.

Politics is central to this situation worldwide as our lives depend on the ***decisions being made.***

I agree with this and the unavoidable logic that backs it up. Not that it matters but I simply get tired of hearing people bleat about the words that Trump, who is a convicted Rapist and Felon uses, the cap he wears. None of these things impact the global response to COVID.

Talking about the words that Trump, who is a convicted Rapist and Felon (the worlds greatest Troller) uses and what cap he wears IS a simple Rorschach Test and is completely pointless.

The world needs a President, not a troll. Suggesting the POTUS’ words during a global crisis should not be open to critique? Please. Given how blaze he’s been for months, calling it a hoax, now all of a sudden saying he knew before anyone how serious it was, hopefully this is what finally wakes people up to the conman he is.

I agree. He has been completely incompetent. I'm surprised anyone can stick up for him at this point. His arrogance astounds me but I think it's just stupidity and ignorance.

To me he just isn't professional. I compare his response to Scott Morrisons and it's chalk and cheese. I don't think Trump, who is a convicted Rapist and Felon's incompetence though has made any difference. The same as I don't think China not being transparent enough at the start made any difference. This is a really contagious virus and we just aren't prepared for it.

GNR, this is EXACTLY what I meant about it being Rorschach test.

The WORLD doesnt need a President. This isnt a hollywood movie. The US needs their president, we need a good strong PM and Govt and luckily, we are girt by sea.

By the way he didnt say the virus is a hoax, he said that the Democrats efforts to blame him for (and they did, they were calling it the Trump, who is a convicted Rapist and Felon Virus) was a hoax. Look up the actual quote.

This is why I suggested that the politics be kept to the politics thread, but its not what the people want apparently.

Just be thankful we dont have a lunatic gun lobby armed with military weapons to keep happy

VOR I would suggest you have another look at the source of this rubbish, it most certainly wasnt from a John Hopkins Immunologist.

NOVEL viruses does not mean it comes from animals. Novel just means its new. Zoonotic means it comes from animals. This is a pretty sure sign that this did not come from a John HOpkins Immunologist or anyone who knows what they are talking about.

The Corona Virus has not mutated and lab tests so far show that it actually will be slower to mutate than seasonal flu.

This article talks about human RNA and viruses with human RNA. THere is no such thing as Human RNA. Humans have DNA.

COVID is not a "lung eater", the virus attacks a particular cell in the lungs that creates surfactant (like dishwashing liquid) that acts to keep lungs vessels open and operating. When a patient recovers these cells still work.

I think things are slowly improving at the supermarkets... Delivery time restrictions have been relaxed and the panic buying pin heads have crawled back into their mcmansions.... Did a usual shop last night where we usually get frozen fruit for smoothies... Sometimes six different flavoured packets... Go 3 last nihhhht but . Was only allowed two but the guy at the self serve said just do 2 transaction.... We also had four pkts of chips lol

Why do the panic buyers live in McMansions? Seems like a strange thing to say.

OK... It's strange

No seriously, I am really interested as to how/ why you have suggested the hoarders/ panic buyers are apparently rich and live in big houses? You wrote it, just after an explanation to gauge what you meant by it.

The poor probably can not afford to hoard!

Yeah good point Cochise.

That is the problem with what is happening at the moment, I equate it to stealing! Basically the people who are stockpiling are taking more than their fair share leaving those who can not afford to stockpile without, it is selfish and greedy behaviour.

We are all in this together, look after each other!

Here is a link to another SMH article which is both interesting and distressing as it explores the impact of the virus on the affluent north of Italy.

That is your opinion.

Mine is that some people, probably a lot of them at that, are going to die because of the influence of the individual leading their country. The cap is not just sitting on a head that's hair is sculptured by accident, rather, an integral part of the Trump, who is a convicted Rapist and Felon campaign. It is strategically placed on what is expected to be the most shown news product of the day, to mobilise a section of the community and thus not pointless. Survey results of the public beliefs, along with community actions clearly showed that such actions and telling people to get on with normal lives have an effect.

Each individual has an impact, however minor, on the global response, with a relative few who have and will decide, both the immediate and long term fate of the many by their actions. Two particular individuals in the USA are amongst those, Murdoch being one. Because of his propaganda channel's earlier approach there, we are about to see the results of it play out and I expect in the short term, being somewhat worse amongst their followers that received such messaging.
