Unfortunately the agreed national strategy was suppression not elimination. Most Premiers from both sides of politics know political mileage can be had b y having no Covid. No Covid appears to be a flexible status as we've seen with Qld.

Elimination works really well as long as others are suppressing the virus, taking the majority of the risk and maintaining healthy economies. You can then sit back in your cosy little chair and say, see look how great it is here and look how bad it is there all the while sponging off the efforts of the others.

As I Queensland resident, I am mortified at the way this covid and many other things have been handled.

The back and forth from the premier, and the sudden 'disappearance' of the Qld Health Doctor 14 days before the election was not by accident.

Then, this latest shutdown (of which I am a part, but happy to comply) is strange in that I am an easy 90 minute drive from the hotspot locations (I'm on the northside and the hotspot locations are mainly southside, Sunnybank, Algester etc), yet the Gold Coast council is only a 20 minute drive, but that isn't included. I would think many would be holidaying there and so extra reason for it to be included.

..... or is it the fact that the magic millions horse carnival is on, along with other prominent festivities that we couldn't possibly cancel or postpone......that makes me very suspicious.

Health or convenient politics.?

She disappeared? Must have been her doppleganger who appeared in this update on 30 October - one day before the election.

Do agree; however that the GC should be included in the lockdown.

She was on the TV every second hour and then 'disappeared', possibly making an appearance the day before the election, granted.

But you may recall that there was an extended period of time where the premier was being asked about border closures or openings. It was clear at the time that she wanted to leave borders open, as she did, but didn't want to say so as this may have affected her popularity, Dr Young was very keen to consider border closures.

I think a single appearance or two on the day before the election doesn't change the motive, IMO.

lock Queensland out Gladys

Please Roadblocks now. No fights from QLD allowed.

hard to believe she got voted back in

Now Queenslanders will see if she has the right stuff .. hope she has !

Because Gladys is just killing it ...you worry about your Premier let us worry about our Premier

They don't have a premier - they have Scomo's puppet. All she's interested in is the grubby cash, having relationships with other corrupt politicians, protecting business interests, pork-barelling without andy accountability, and whinging about others who don't do what she wants.
I am from NSW but live in QLD - 1,000,000 percent Ana has done a better job than Berejokelian.

Yeah, no.. Annastacia Moneyszczuk only has a sledgehammer in the toolbox, which of course can be circumvented if you are rich or will bring money into Queensland (the disgusting AFL debacle). Queensland is surviving on handouts that will end soon. It is a basket case and unnecessary so. Perimeter defences will be breached and at an increasing rate. The poor systems in Queensland for contact tracing, dept of health and the total disregard by its citizens of the health of others, as could be seen by the mass exodus of greater Brisbane before the 6pm deadline, show the real disregard to the overall well being of Queenslanders.

Mass exodos ...its school holidays and any given Friday you'd have that much traffic easily heading to the Sunny Coast or the gold coast .....and 2ndly everything is booked solid ...I was supposed to be taking a week off from the 10th -17th ..we weren't sureb if we were taking the dog and the place we had put a hold on booked it out ...when I did a bit of a search I was dreaming ...nothing was available

No way you were going to find accomodation anywhere South of Mackay

I cancelled my week away in regional NSW due to Covid and not wanting to take it up there. Wouldn't people have done that in QLD?

Clearly they won’t.

You really need to get off whatever it is you are on. It's skewing your ability to see reality. 🙂

It’s not me that’s skewing reality. Many irresponsible now ex friends have done exactly what I have stated.

It must be Paulin Hanson Memroial Day 🙂 What do you mean by:

Many irresponsible now ex friends have done exactly what I have stated.

Took the opportunity to possibly spread Covid19 far and wide across Queensland by leaving the greater Brisbane area while they could without regard of the consequences. I’ll be right Jack, not at all in the spirit of keeping Queensland safe. So my personal experience is that they clearly won’t cancel their time away from greater Brisbane if they can get away with it and be damn the with consequences.

They would be ex-friends of mine too - no argument there.

Having said that, to paint the picture that all a state is like that is what gets up my nose - especially when the Premier you defend is, at least in my opinion, and has handled the situation, far worse.

I know some people, parents of kids my daughter goes to school with who have been all over Sydney everyday and yesterday headed to the South Coast to find some sun and escape the masks. To me this is disgusting behaviour.

Im not sure I agree with you on this one.

Yesterday there was 1 locally transmitted case, the day before there was 4 but 3 of those were household cases and have never been infectious out of isolation. Two days before that were zero. There is no exponential growth of cases. There are a total of 180 cases the vast majority of which are overseas cases. There are 5.25M people in Sydney, 7.5M in NSW.

People still need to live, businesses need to survive even businesses in coastal and regional centres. THe numbers simply arent high enough to stop all travel and activity.

Of course all other steps should be taken, masks, contact tracing etc.

I'd agree except the recommendation was to limit travel to regional areas.

Sure I acknowledge ta

I'm just someone who tries to follow the current advice as best I can, I would love to go away and give me daughter a bit more fun than heading to the park but they have advised against that at this point in time.

I also agree that the current numbers don't really need the panic and overreaction we are seeing from some people.

My take on how things have changed is politicians and the chief medical types are very concerned by this new strain as this could put the whole country into an extended lock down and the hospitals getting over run . get used to wearing masks as this will be the norm for a long time .
Talking to family and friends in the Uk and Scotland over the last few days they are very very concerned , they can not even leave the house no doctors only emergency / pharmacy nothing a bit of essentials food wise that’s it !The planes keep landing and this strain is being imported .. always new politicians were brain dead !

Yeah I really good friend of mine is Welsh and she lives here but his very concerned about family back home.

Always been of the opinion that elimination was going to get the best results out of everything, including the economy. We were basically there.

After the initial open period allowing for repatriation, the federal government could easily have started bringing the others home through the ready facilities and quickly updated the others around the nation. Then ferrying them within a bubble to the capital cities upon quarantining.

We had an international carrier sitting on the ground having gotten a bailout and staff on Jobkeeper. Qantas should have been carrying our export freight on their outward journeys and our citizens along with necessary goods on their return in a bubble of sorts.

Yep. Instead Scotty from Marlketing thought it would be a bettr use of taxpayers money to send Matthias around the world for 5 weeks at $4,350 per hour for the jet. Might be why he cut JobSeeker back.

Seriously Victoria have you learnt nothing from your last hotel quarantine debacle?

A lot of hiding behind 'protocols' by Vic. I understood this three day lockdown was to be used by Qld to contact trace the close contacts of the cleaner. Having to chase the contacts of this lady from Vic quarantine surely must be a divesrion of resources?

@mike said in [Coronavirus Outbreak](/post/1290785) said:

On that we can agree 🙂

They keep on saying we need to protect work and businees but why governments keep taking the tight-sphincter Tuesday approach to quarantine and not make a solid, secure system is beyond me. Surely, the cost of employing someone on a reasonable wage full-time is not that great a cost to the community compared to a lock-down?
Anyone who works in the quarantine hotels should be on something like a 2-week on/ off roster like FIFOs; with testing every day. Pay them well, give them good food and accomodation. They should be housed in a secure facility themselves so they can't get on public transport to go to and from work, go shopping and inadvertantly crate a situation like Brisbane has now.
When their rostered 2-week period is over, they should do quarantine in a separate facility before going back into the general community. If it were paid properly and a system in place there would be no shortage of people willing to work there.

So if there was any doubt about incompetent Anastacia in Queensland, check it out today. Not having the Gold Coast included in the original Lockdown was weird given it is so close to the locations of Case 1.

Case 2, the Victoria to Maleny person is now in the heart of Sunshine Coast, and they have listed shops and other locations of concerns. ....but you guessed it, no lock down on Sunshine Coast.

Now I am a willing participant for wearing masks and locking down, thats my community responsibility, but how the bloody hell is this being justified? Known case of the UK strain in this area, but no lockdown?

There is a whiff of a cover up. Releasing a UK returnee without genome sequencing being completed to determine Covid strain does not appear to be precautionary.

The Qld Premier now advising the Gabba will be at 100% capacity despite the lockdown is extraordinary.

I feel for all Qld residents in lockdown.

I think sometimes there's a fine line between barracking and abuse. No right-thinking fan would ever condone racism but where do you drawn the line on non-racist barracking. Some of the barracking Australian teams have copped in England borders on abuse yet it's never mentioned. Even some of the stuff the Barmy Army come up with in Australia is abusive.
