And here we go again.... ?
We have been playing Russian roulette with this virus for 18 months now this outcome doesn’t surprise me unfortunately
100% mate. Every time this rubbish starts up again I wind up fuming. I just find it absolutely mind-dumbing that we aren’t doing more in locking the entire country down from the outside until this is over.
I feel like a broken record. Give them a chance to get home via the miliatary or bulk flights, if they reject, they tough luck and best wishes. Until someone shows some balls, this virus will resurface for years to come.
I’m self-employed and have a partner and mortgage to pay. These idiots running the show have absolutely no idea. Their planning is completely reactive and will continue to be time and time again. The economy and unemployment will continue to go to the pits. People will continue to suffer, people will probably continue to die and it’s all because of return travellers.
We wouldn’t need a vaccine if we stopped the return travellers or pick the last of them up who want to return home and plant them on a purpose built facility/unused barracks, whatever, until they are clear.
We wouldn’t even need to talk about these sceptical “vaccines” that are still in trial stages and pushed through. We could afford to wait for a vaccine that’s proven to actually work and safe from any side affects, but no....open the doors Scomo. Put them in the CBD’s. What could go wrong.
We can't wait for a delayed vaccine rollout, we need it now, that would be economic disaster as all other countries reengage we will be sitting here isolated.
Despite their choices I believe all Australians should be able to return home at anytime.
We can definitely wait for a delayed rollout! The current options aren’t proven and have potentially dangerous side affects. They’re still in trials man! I won’t be going anywhere near them and I’m not an anti-vaxxer.
If the borders are closed there’s absolute minimal risk of the virus getting re-entry. Hence, we don’t necessarily need a rushed vaccine. We just don’t take people in until the pandemic is over. If the pandemics over, we don’t need a vaccine for something that no longer exists.
I think I’ve had the conversation with you previously about our differing opinions on allowing Australians home and I’ve said I respect and understand your view. I just think given fair notice and the opportunity to return home (albeit by military or bulk flights) gives them a chance. If they flat out refuse because it doesn’t suit their circumstances, then tough. We need a firm line approach on a virus that’s crippling our nation repeatedly. It’s dead set just going to keep popping up forever otherwise and the band-aid approach is great at minimising the severity, but it won’t ever solve it until literally every single traveller has returned. It’s as simple as that mate, the pollies and health deptartments are reactive, not proactive.
It might be a right for Australians to be able to return home, I agree, but it’s also my right and my families right to be safe. In my eyes, it’s actually incredibly selfish to not return “home”. If they’re given a chance to come back and don’t, they are putting every Australian in danger for the foreseeable future. That’s not Australian. Half of these return travellers aren’t even “full time” Aussies and only use their ticket to escape the shitstorm their country might going through at that given time and bringing it here. I know people who work in the airports and police who’ve had to deal with these situations and even they think it’s a disgrace.
This isn’t about turning an Aussie away, they’re welcome home. But if they turn their backs on us, we need to turn our backs on them for the good of the country.
Simply, the only proven solution to stop the spread is to close the borders. To minimise the chance of infection and to lock down.
We could be covid free in a matter of weeks with a hard line stance of complete international border closure. Or we could continue this band-aid fix and hopefully get lucky in a few years time.
Under your idea the borders will be closed for a decade mate, this virus will not be disappearing for a long long time, if ever. Under your proposal as soon as we reopen borders we will be flooded with the virus and would be the only country in the world in that situation and would be destroyed economically.
I do understand you argument about people should come back as soon as possible and have actually pushed that argument on here but on reflection that goes against what I believe my Australian citizenship and nationality means to me. Yes anyone that is overseas at this point for their own benefit that later decides to come home is selfish, I 100% agree with that. It is just to me that being Australian and having that right to return home is unconditional, it doesn't matter if you are selfish, or an asshole, it doesn't matter if you are in the wrong or haven't been here in a number of years, this place is home and it means something. You should always be welcome at home.
If it’s a decade then so be it. But it’s more likely to be ongoing in every country if they continue to allow return travellers back how they currently are. I could argue it could be decades with the latter and millions dead without a worldwide hard line effort and decisions.
I respect your values and opinion on being Australian. I wish it was a simple as saying you can come back whenever you feel like it. I’m just a bit over it all and want cut the PC bs out of it all and see us solve this thing. I do not think we ever will with these constant outbreaks and travellers returning to major cities around the nation. It’ll never work. We’re just copping another spell of it in NSW now and it’s our turn. It’ll be another states soon and the cycle will be never-ending until the government makes some tough decisions for the nation and stops pussy footing around. That’s my take anyway.
I wanna avoid the broken record speech, but it’s literally infuriating and scary. I really don’t want to lose anyone I care about because of some idiot who thought working overseas or something like that was more important to them at the time. My family and friends comes first and I’m so let down by what I’m seeing over and over again. We just don’t seem to learn and people will live or die because of these decisions.
Problem is it will never end, there is no way of eliminating this virus. It will get to a point where it is not as deadly through things like vaccinations and herd immunity overseas, but even if they get to that point overseas if we open our borders without some level of protection then you will be introducing a novel virus to our community. By closing us off while the rest of the world reopen you would cause terrible economic damage they we may never recover from.
Nah, it'll end. It’ll take a few years to get a proper vaccine without side affects though. A few people on here have even brought up alternatives already available which I found interesting.
In my eyes it’s either close the gates and open them up when the world sorts themselves out too vs. keep them open, let this thing mutate over and over and hopefully it just vanishes like the Spanish flu did or maybe, just maybe these vaccines save everyone, which we know it currently doesn’t. In the meantime, bunch of people will get sick or die with these government patch jobs.
To me, if feels like a lot of Australians are living in a lah lah land reality with these return travellers. What’s the old saying "Insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results."
The Spanish Flu didn't disappear, a natural immunity was created after it swept the world. It has since mutated through antigenic drift and its descendants are the season flu variants we have today. so after 100 years we still have mutations of the Spanish Flu causing illness and death.
Yes, technically you’re correct. It’s mutated over many years but it’s not the same extent of virus that wiped out 50 million people within several years. The variants have always remained, but the initial impact is what wiped so many out. Similar to what we’re facing now in some ways. If Australia limits the virus completely along with the variants of Covid coming in we’re better off.
