Could Siro be a Half ???

Was just reading the RLW this morning and in the Wests Tigers page of info it listed Curtis Sironen as the young gun player to watch.

That started me thinking as to his future in the club.

He plays 5/8, a position Benji has made his own and is short odds to do so for the remainder of his career, hopefully at the WTs.

This leaves Sironen out of his favourite position. If he is to play first grade what are his options ?.

He could try centre - Chris Lawrence and Ayshford look to have the 2 centre spots locked up for the forseeable future.

He could play backrow - probably one of WTs strengths, with arguably the comps best 2nd row pair in Ellis and Blair and Heighington, Fulton and possibly Reddy as further competition, not counting BBW and a couple of other young guys on the up.

He could try half - a position very unsettled at the moment. Moltzen and Miller are contending with no stand out option.

He obviously has a good passing and kicking game as all 5/8s are required to have. I imagine that his toughness will increase as he gets exposure to a harder, faster game played by bigger stronger players.

This to me is his best option in the short term to playing the top grade.

If he carn't find a niche to fit in he could find himself as one of the many talented players who don't quite make it as a long term player with his potential not quite fulfilled.

Certainly a problem both for him and for the club who will look to him to fulfil his destiny as a Wests Tigers player.

He will be somewere in the team in the future but next year its between moltzen or miller.

I am not so sure…..I think Moltzen will be given first crack but I think Miller still needs to prove he can plays consistently at NYC level. I think the dark horse might be Chisholm. He seems to have a good passing game, he knows the defensive plays and he could play a Scott Prince style role with Benji. I think he has a lot to offer.

Given his age and size, a few more years in NYC learning to tackle (yeah I know, its NYC!), perhaps lock may be an option?

He's as big as his old man now height wise….imo his long term futures the backrow. ....maybe centre. Still got 4 or 5 years growing in him

To say Miller isnt a standout for Halfback and then entertain the thought of Sironen playing there is stretching the bow somewhat, considering Jacob was a far better player than Curtis in 2011…

Curtis has some time until we 'need' to see him in firsts, so I'd like to simply see how he develops over the next 2 years before trying to pigeon hole him. He might end up playing Prop Forward? 😱pen_mouth:

ONE WORD - NO

reason go back to U/20's semi verus Cowboys this year, of the kick off Tigers kick to Cowboys, on 1st hit up of game, Curtis misses a simple 1 on 1 tackle which leads to a linbreak and Cowboys score of the kickoff.
He needs a full injury free season and a injury free off season so he can build his body into a 1st grader

But if we are hit by injuries, I would throw him in there and let him sink or swim

Exactly, he's not a halfback and he's not a fullback. As he continues to fill out I see him stepping into the ballplaying backrow option that Fulton provides, except Sirro will have the extra size that will allow him to dominate.

Here we go again with size of half backs

I am not going to answer this question until he finishes developing ,but what I will say if he still has all the attributes of a half back whether he is 4 foot 6 or 6 foot 6 He should be allowed and able to play that position not pigeon hole him saying he is to big to play a particular position

I think lock come mid 2013.

I agree,
He hasn't even spent a full year in the NYC yet, give him another year or so and when he does come thru I can see it being at lock. As we all can see he's a big boy and still growing, will be interesting to see how he fills out.

Last year they had miller as the young gun and start up half. Also in the ashford article it has sirro vying for the 7 jersey also

I noticed that as well,

Also no mention of Chisholm, I thought he would have been a main contender for the No 7\. Probably just an over sight on Ayshfords part during the interview.

**Injury puts Sironen on back foot in race for No.7**
WESTS TIGERS young gun Curtis Sironen has fallen behind in the race to replace Robert Lui in the No.7 jersey for the start of next year's NRL season, due to his recovery after an off-season shoulder surgery.

His dad, Balmain legend Paul Sironen, conceded he would be starting next season from behind despite speculation coach Tim Sheens had pencilled him in as an option to replace Lui.

Lui has joined North Queensland and 18-year-old Sironen, a five-eighth in the club's National Youth Competition team, has been mentioned alongside the likes of Tim Moltzen, Jacob Miller and Tom Humble as a contender for the vacant role.

''He injured himself in round 10 and, I thought, did well to keep playing on with it,'' Sironen snr, who represented Australia as a back-rower in the 1980s and '90s, said.

''Curtis had an operation and he won't be back until sometime in March. He is spending the off-season rehabilitating and making sure he recovers fully. So, I guess, that would put him behind the eight ball for next year.''

There was a push for Sironen jnr, who stands 193 centimetres and weighs 93 kilograms, to make his top-grade debut this season.

His father joked to The Sun-Herald that, if made halfback, he would probably be the biggest halfback in the professional game's history.

"Though, he certainly has a really good pass," he said. "Curtis's main priority at the moment is to recover from the injury and get back into it."

Meanwhile, Sironen snr said there was a whiff of nostalgia about the star-studded 2012 Wests Tigers pack.

"You can't compare generations but the number of internationals in the pack reminds me of Balmain [in the 1980s] when we had internationals like Steve Roach, Benny Elias, Wayne Pearce, Bruce McGuire and myself in the scrum," he said.

"Next year's pack looks very exciting. Robbie Farah and Keith Galloway have played for Australia, Chris Heighington and Gareth Ellis represented England together and we've gained Adam Blair, who has played strongly for the Kiwis.

"And, on the bench, we also have Liam Fulton, who can make 40 tackles a game and, then, there's Aaron Woods. He's a young bloke with enormous talent, as is another young bloke like Matt Groat."

Its funny you know ,the club sees Curtis as a possible half yet no one here sees him as a half back

Forget the size issues from what I have seen he could definitely be a half back

Miller is the better half and so is chisholm from what i've seen. Apart from that he'll have established players in the likes of moltzen and humble to compete with. This makes him about 5th option for the season, and I doubt we'll see him get a run in first grade until he's 20.
