Former NRL player Craig Field has been charged after a man was left on life support following a punch to the head outside a hotel on the NSW north coast, police say.
The man, 50, was found unconscious outside the Kingscliff Beach Hotel on Marine Parade, Kingscliff, by police and paramedics about 9.15pm yesterday.
He was given cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and taken to Tweed Heads Hospital, where he remained in a critical condition this morning, a hospital spokesman said.
A 41-year-old man and a 39-year-old man were arrested at a Kingscliff home and taken to Tweed Heads police station, where they were charged with assault occasioning grievous bodily harm. They will appear in Tweed Heads Local Court this afternoon.
A hotel staff member said there was a fight but that he was unable to comment any further.
Police appealed for anyone with information to phone Crime Stoppers on 1800 333 000.
Field, 39, started his league career with Souths in 1990 and was promoted to captain in 1994 before leaving them in 1996\. He spent two seasons at Manly before joining Balmain Tigers, which became Wests Tigers in 2000\. He was dropped from the club by 2002.
He had a playing and coaching stint with Pia in France in 2002 and 2003 before returning to Australia. Field had most recently been the head coach of the Cudgen Hornets A Grade side in the Gold Coast/Tweed Rugby League competition.

All parties should have read this first. Some sage words for all of us.

obviously we cant comment on this charge as the matter is before the courts but Field is no stranger to trouble, only a few years ago he was linked to a armed hold up in Wagga at a pub he worked in although Iam sure he got off the charges. Anyway its a shame to see a bloke who made good coin end up on struggle street because he did not have the brains to take the right road in life

Yes. Charged with murder.

Ladies and Gents normal proticol applies now that the matter is before the courts in that discussion is allowed but keep it sensible and even tempered.

It is a trragedy for the victims family and they should be first in peoples thoughts

Just walk away boys and girls. This story proves that getting into brawls with people you don't know when your out on the town isn't worth it. Just swallow your manly pride and walk away, because you can easily be the receiver or be on the receiving end. Either way you'll ruin your entire life

Ummm … if you are the receiver you are on the receiving end.
You're right though , in this day and age you never know what some idiot will do.
I was surprised to read the other day that police at the Cross now wear 'knife proof' vests.
What's happened to Australia?

To anyone who is blowing up (Everyone), I hope you don't cheer when a fight breaks out on the field, because its the exact same thing.

Not that I know the story of the incident, but what Field did is not going to be to different to what someone like Jennings did in Origin 1.

Thats no defence of Field BTW, who is an idiot.
