Cricket Season Thread

Yep. I think our best hope of drawing the game is the Saffas trying to bat us out completely. Really their best hope is to get to 400 and declare an hour after lunch. The chances of them losing would be minimal but they need to make some big inroads into our lineup today. I'm thinking their mindset is more to bat near or past tea and try to have enough runs to prevent any 4th innings chase (they'd need Aus to follow-on for the plan to work).
If that happens and our openers hold up we should be sweet. On this wicket you'd hope we could survive 2 days with close to 20 wickets in hand but our batting lineup does have more holes than a swiss cheese block.

Know the pitch hasn't had time to harden up due to the rain and it is still trampolining to a degree but our attack is looking pedestrian at best

Why after Watson was ruled out we didn't pick Starc is beyond me

Has Sheens turned his hand as a cricket selector ??

And why we have picked Lyons still makes me scratch my head Don't pick a spinner for the sake of it (particularly a finger spinner) I'd rather go in with four good quicks than a spinner cause the pitch might turn

Hilfenhaus looks to have gone back to his round arm action and swinging it out of the hand, he swings it to early now and becomes very predictable. I dont have a whole lot of faith in our batsmen to get us through this. Also although Lyons taken 2 wickets hes been pretty ordinary, both wickets were average balls and poor shots. He's looked the least troubling for the Saffa batsmen and he hasnt been overly economical either

Steyne's stayin

It was a long way over too! Looked pretty plumb at first glance. Something to keep in mind for the Aus batsmen when it comes to referrals. Rudolph gone though.

Yeh, Im looking forward to seeing him bowl - unfortunately

Reminded again of how much vision the selectors lack. Ponting the Superannuant beaten pointlessly and Quiney, the 30 year old debutant with the FC average of 37, falling for the oldest trick in the book. Did I mention Starc on the bench ….?

Got an opinion or just flicking BS from the peanut gallery?

I could care less tbh Just find it funny how everyone tries to play selector at the first sign of trouble without considering the fact that we just might not be good enough no matter whose there :astonished:

Case in point Ponting. After the last Ashes his head was being called for on a platter, comes back last summer dominates against a weak attack and is a hero again. Comes out first innings this summer against the no 1 attack in the world and i can already hear the calls for him to be put it to pasture again

I remember 12 months i got plastered deluxe by Stryker for suggesting Ponting and Hussey would get murdered if they made it to the next Ashes series. I'm curious to know what his thoughts would be 12 months down the line

Ponting made plenty of runs in Shield cricket prior to this series, his selection was warranted and still is. Im still willing to give Quiney a chance but not at 3, he either takes over as opener from Warner or he goes down to 5 and Clarke steps up to 3

How many runs did they declare at and what's our score at stumps?

SA were bowled out for 450 (9/450 with Duminy absent hurt), at stumps the Aussies are 3/111 off 26 overs.

I think there is still a chance for us to win the game, if the Aussies can score about 250-300 runs by around tea tomorrow (Its possible considering the extra time being made up, plus the positive manner the two current batsman are showing), then we could put some pressure on their batsman especially as they are a batsman short.

We did it against the Windies earlier in the year, admittedly SA has a stronger batting line up but at the same time the pitch in the Caribbean was not as lively as this one.

I think that's highly optimistic Jazza. But if we make it to tea we should at least be able to force a draw. Our best case scenario would be getting over 400 and declaring close to stumps and hoping Pattinson goes nuts and demolishes their top order.

You seem to be forgetting they lost their last 3 or 4 wickets by swinging for the fences due to the loss of time in the game. Had this been day 2 they would have no doubt batted a lot more conservatively and made 500+

Theres only one team capable of winning from here and it isn't the Aussies
