Watson is injured and won't play the first test. Apparently Doolan is assured of a spot and Hughes and Henriques are fighting for the other spot.

What's wrong with Watson this time , did he cut himself shaving ?? :unamused:

Probably sneezed and tore a hamstring again.

Hope he doesn't read our comments CB , he'll miss the next Test with a bruised ego

Surprised Smith sent us in … The pitch does have a bit of a green tinge about it. Decision justified with the early wicket of Warner. Wow what a difference with Steyne and Philander bowling instead of the English pop gun attack. Shaping us as a good series.

Mid-way through the day it's 4-125\. They're bowling pretty well and not bowling many loss deliveries at all. Marsh is doing well. Let's hope it continues.

Lyon may be liking this pitch as it doesn't seem the quickest. He may have something to say in this match.

I think the player who will be crucial to Australia will be Haddin

If he bats like he did v the Poms he will turn the average Australian scores into good ones

Only got home when Marsh was in his sixties and he looked good getting his hundred

Lets hope he and Smith can battle on to stumps and set us up for a 400+ first innings

Marsh has batted well and Smith has been chanceless.
Steyn has been sick today but I think this all goes back to Smith sending us in. I think that was the wrong move.

great to see shaun marsh get a century! plenty of detractors, so i hope he can go on with consistently good scores and cement his spot in the test team. we need at least one real west aussie in there!

just seen the score at stumps 4-297 awesome comeback by the Aussie , Marsh has hit back with a brilliant century and Smith has done well to sit on 91 . A 400 score will give us a massive chance

Of course he has detractors, he has consistently done nothing but been selected anyway. The only people backing him in are parochial West Aussies.

Boof and Invererity are geniuses. To pick a bloke who has averaged 27 and scored 1 first class century in two years and see him bat like that is a masterstroke. He looked switched on from ball one and batted superbly. Long may it last.

Inverarity is anything but a genius. Between he and Pat Howard Australian cricket has gone backwards ten years. Boof is responsible for getting these guys to perform.

Smiffy is starting to look like the guy that everyone turns to when they need someone to put in a big innings. Doesn't seem to score when team is travelling well but when the chips are down he digs in with a gritty innings. I'll take him any day of the week over Watson who only scores in the second innings when we are leading by 200+ runs.

Must say I thought picking Darsh was a retarded decision, but he's done what was expected of him and he's certainly going well. Always happy to be proven wrong. Like Happy, I hope they kick on into Day 2 and score well into the 400's. Could get even higher if Hadds and Johnson have a go as well.

The real test is coming up however. I know our pace attack is looking great, but I must say the Saffa quicks struggled on this pitch more than I thought they would which would suggest our boys may find it difficult as well. The Proteas batting is significantly better than ours so looking forward to seeing our quicks ask questions of them. This pitch may offer something for Lyon, he could be the x-factor in this match.

Steve Smith is fast becoming a real class player. He dosnt seem to get the headlines as plenty of people still think of him as this young kid who plays plenty of big shots to the wrong balls. Like Steve Waugh did many years ago, he has cut out the low percentage shots and plays to his strengths. Throw in some handy if slightly erratic leg spin and top shelve fielding he could be our next real world class player, and I would imagine he will replace Clark as captain in a few years down the track.

PS Clark needs to get that hunger back, seems to be going through the motions at present and his scores reflect it

Clarke scored 2 centuries and was threatening broken bones in the Ashes series. I think his appetite is just fine.

Agree about Smith. That was sublime batting last night. Judge a batsman by how he can play an on drive against genuine pace. There were some gems last night.

I gotta say Boof has done a great job. He's taken some fringe international players and they've gone to that next level under his leadership in Steve Smith and Johnson. I know it's only one game but Marsh's knock certainly is a step in the right direction. It's not like it's a new generation of cattle coming through, a lot of this is the same names we've been working with for a few years now, Lehman just knows how to get the best out of them.

Yep, give the man a ten year contract. Certainly knows how to get the lads to enjoy their cricket, even when it looks like they are behind the eight ball.
