great bowling display today by the aussies in particular debutants Lyon and Copeland with Lyon picking up Sangakarra first ball and Copeland picking up Dilshan with his second no mean feet by either.
Bowling them out for 105 with Lyon ending up with 5 and watson 3

:astonished: WOW!!!

Not a great follow up by the Aussies though, 2/9 after five overs. Watson went first ball, Ponting went for 4\. 8 of the 9 runs have come off the bat, and both were boundaries. Hughes yet to get off the mark after 16 balls. Not watching the game so I can't tell whether it's good bowling or just sluggish batting.

Poor old Punter has come unstuck attempting a pull shot again… Lost control of the shot and the bat altogether, throwing it about twenty metres during the stroke, out for 4.

Watson caught first delivery of the innings.

Is it a crappy pitch for batting on???

According to Tom Moody's twitter account it's playing like a fourth/fifth day pitch. Hussey said it was the driest first day pitch he's ever played on. From what I've been hearing, definitely something in there for the spinners, and inconsistent bounce for the quicks, doesn't sound too good for us given our track record with spin bowling.

Wouldn't say a crappy pitch. Plenty of movement and turn available for the bowlers though with 6 LBW's from the first innings (3 each team.)

Definitely favours the bowlers, but the shot selection (by both teams,) on a whole has been fairly average.

Clarke is doing well getting well forward to the tweakers but I can see him being stumped.

So the pitch will get worse as time goes on? Has to be bad for Sri Lanka who are batting last!

Great to see that Trent Copeland got amongst the wickets, he's the first Bathurst player since Test Captain and Olympian Brian Booth in the 50's, I know Bathurst claims Peter Toohey but he was from Blayney.

Will be very surprised if this goes past the 3rd day. Lyon bowled well on debut and Watson killed em with reverse swing. As someone said earlier poor shot selection has undone quite a few batsmen. All 3 Aussie 2nd innings wickets have come from ordinary shot selection. Thankfully the Chucker has retired so the Lankans are not really much of a Test cricket team ATM.

Just read on cricinfo that the highest successful run chase at Galle is 96, and we're up by 255\. At least if we do go down it will be due to a record-breaking fourth innings!

It is definitely playing like a day 4 or 5 pitch.

The ball is cutting into the right handers and staying low, which is probably why Watson and Copeland have been our most effective quicks, Watson with his cutters and Copeland with his accuracy.
I guess thats why the scoring by the Sri Lankans has been slow and there have been 3 lbw's to Watson. The Sri Lankan tail did throw their wickets away going after Lyon though.

If we can scrap another 150 runs we'll be certainties.

I'd bat it out until the end of the second session tomorrow. If Hussey and Pup keep their cool they could probably stack on another 200 and that would put us at 300 with Sri Lanka chasing just shy of 500 runs to win over two days on a pitch that is deteriorating at a rapid rate.

Very impressive performance by the Aussies here. Firstly Huss with the bat in the first innings got us a very competitive score, then Lyon…wow, did not expect him to do so well. Hopefully he continues and the selectors persist with him for a little. With a bit of luck Usman stays in with the tail for a bit, gets us to 200 for the second dig, setting the Lankans a target of 370, with plenty of time to roll them. Boys are going very well. Hopefully they kick on for the rest of the series. Amazing what a bit of new blood and some trusty veterans can do.

Yeah I think the boys will have a few days spare Whats the pitch doing was at work all night

It's the equivalent of a fourth/fifth day pitch Happy, offering a fair bit to the spinners, they're really getting the ball to bite.

Its playing very slow too, which could be an advantage to the Sri Lankans batting last, you would rather have slow variation then fast.
