But we all know NSW produce the best young cricketers.
With a national side still in transition, young players are going to be preferred to older one's. No point picking guys like Dave Hussey who are just going to retire in 2 or 3 years anyway.
We have basically gone through 2 transitions in 5 years because we replaced the first batch of retirees with 30 year olds.
First we had Langer, Hayden, Martyn, Gilly, Warne and McGrath go.
Followed by Lee, Symonds, Clark and Katich with Ponting, Haddin and Hussey approaching their twilight.

Who else would you consider who is young, in form, ready and not from NSW? There's Cutting and Pattinson who would replace Johnson and Siddle and they arent from NSW anyway, Wade for Haddin, Peter George from SA, Coulter-Nile would be in the mix barring injury.
But I cant really think of any batsmen or openers who can slip right in besides Khawaja and Marsh. I'm not sure if Warner is ready but at least he has scored runs unlike the other openers around.

Yeah but Warner might get 40 -50 but what is the use if its of 20-30 deliveries You want your openers to take the shine off the ball and build an innings around him Everyone hoping we have openers like Hayden and Langer at the moment in the works may need to sit down for a while . We need to find a side that can score 300+ consistantly and can take 20 wickets at least 4 out of every 6 tests . We would be flat out doing it 2 times a series atm

Warner might only get 40-50 runs, but he will most definitely take the shine off the cherry. He has so much power behind his stroke. We need a stable opening partnership that has time to gel. Unfortunately cricket in general has suffered in Australia due to our success. We had a golden era where our best cricketers all filtered through in the space of 15-20 years. We had great cricketers like MacGill, Hodge, DiVenuto et al all being kept out due to our over performing top 11.

Warner doesn't make 50 off 20 balls at 1st class level - he's shown he's got enough common sense to know the difference between 20/20 and the Sheffield Shield. He's average close to 60 in the 4-day game and has shown he can bat for long periods of time.

Yoss and CB I think you missed my main point We need to rebuild this team and trying to rebuild it to be like the side we had had since 1995 is being a bit silly

That side was a once in a century side and will take possibly generations to rebuild . My thoughts are to rebuild a solid side with batsman who once they been tied down for ten balls don't freak out And having bowlers who don't drop their bundle once things get ugly

Batting wise we need to find a Dravid or Amla type that we could build an innings around whos not trying to score a hundred in a session

I know what you're saying Happy but I think you underestimate Warner. I agree you need a balance and people like Khawaja will provide that but the rise of 20/20 means the days of the plodder are numbered.

Actually Yoss I view another way ,every test side needs a good plodder and look at the top nations Each side has a player (top class) who can sheet anchor a innings They will become invaluable in the future (If Test Cricket survives)

Warner is a much more mature player than when he exploded onto the scene (literally) a couple of years ago against SA.

He'd breathe a new lease of life into our test team - Nuggety and tough like Alan Border, and potentially explosive and flamboyant like Adam Gilchrist.

Underdog I rarely disagree but comparing Warner to Border is like comparing Blocker Roach to Chicka Ferguson

We do Happy, his name is Usman Khawaja.

CB from the results so far I don't think he will be the long term answer Hope I wrong but time will tell

A bit harsh. I thought his innings in the 2nd test was exceptional. If he got rolled cheaply we were 3 for bugger all. He's improving all the time and he'll play over 100 tests for Australia.

interesting that Harris, Marsh, Johnson, Watson and Cummins are all ruled out for the First NZ Test. Pattinson and Starc are putting their hands up with 4 and 3 wickets each in the AUS A match against NZ. Copeland would also come into consideration with Warner pretty much guaranteed the opening role

Cummins has been ruled out officially? So what are we thinking?

Hughes
Warner
Khawaja
Ponting
Clarke
M Hussey
Haddin
Siddle
Starc/Cutting/someone!
Copeland
Lyon

I believe that is what it will be looking like. I think Cutting will make it in front of Starc by the way.

itll be pattinson his been on tour with the first team for the last few but hasnt got a test. bowled well today so he will more than likely get the spot

Bazz this is where we go wrong Cutting knows the pitch and conditions and what lines work well at the Gabba far better than anyone else

i completely agree with you about cutting he is the form bowler of the state comp and knows how to bowl on the gabba but i think the problem could be when he got the callup to bowl on the big match against NZ he didnt do well but it will be interesting thats for sure to see which one gets the cap
