Culture Change (Lol)

I'm middle of the road on this, with the wins over a few big scalps masking regular losses to those below us on the ladder, that the above results show we should have beaten. I don't know that I would call it a culture issue, but it is definitely an issue.

When looking at the club as a whole, there is no doubt that the club is in a much improved position and was so when Cleary arrived. As with the previous couple of coaches, inheriting a squad not if his making, unlike them, Ivan had the advantage of at least half the players being off contract and only forking out $100k odd for Sirro to play elsewhere this season. Despite not getting an initial off season, he was able directly monitor and decide on which others to keep whilst starting to mold them for this season without a scrap of pressure.

It must be remembered that the Potter and Taylor were appointed pretty well as their pre-seasons were about to start and little or no wriggle room or say in recruitment, with board members interfering, even directly arranging contracts. Contrast this to a coach given much greater control over his squad and recruitment, there is no comparison to be made, so Ivan should rightly be held more to account than his predecessors.

Our off field 'culture' certainly appears to be much improved, but so it damn should be. Rather than struggling by with a shortage of dollars and a couple of NRL appointed directors having WT hamstrung, the partnership structure is sorted and financially sound. Apart from the lack of premium facilities, which is being attended to, there are no real barriers to WT competing with most of other clubs.

Basically, pretty well all the building blocks were there for a successful season and if we don't make the finals, which is very unlikely, then the season is yet another failure, culture of not.

Well said.

I wonder why JT got bashed from pillar to post for failing miserably for not fixing the defence when it was his number one goal, yet Cleary gets a free pass for not changing the culture when that’s his main goal. Double standards.

Ohh please get over your defense of JT

You cant see rhyme nor reason on anything when you are fixated on him.

I am sure JT spawned this bloke, he will never be cobvinced of the the ineptitude of the myth JT

Lol, perhaps.

Its ridiculous but im sure he knows, he is just debating the fact for arguments sake.

you know things are messed up when all the people who asked the critics to give Jason Taylor more time are the same ones asking questions of Cleary so soon into a rebuild.

Lol I love it.

Gunner started the topic because he’s still hurting from Taylor getting the flick .. and trying to put the heat on Cleary. Nothing to read here…

There was a lot heat on him after the game. Not just from uncle gunner.

Anyway, I never started this thread for any other reason other than at times this year, it feels like nothing has changed. We’re still losing when it matters.

Plenty has changed at the club. Under Taylor we were a basket case. Then Ivan comes, he signs up a host of players, maybe some questionable, but he needed to. Its been a work in progress. This year we have performed alot better than expected, and even though we may miss the top 8, we have achieved alot. Most people had us wooden spooners and most on this forum had us comming no better than 12th. Now we lose a game to the dogs and you want to sack Brooks, Farah the coach. REALLY, understand your dissapointment but get real

If you are referring to me, I have literally not called for any sackings. I’m now over the frustration from Friday night, and looking towards this Friday. The Warriors have left the door open for us. We gotta make it count.

Doesnt matter if you have called for his sacking. Hopefully now you understand a little how people were treated when they tried to point out some issues with Jason Taylor.

Every single time anyone criticized him the old boys defended him.

The only posters who have called me out in this thread have been the ones most vocal in their hate for Taylor. So i take that with a grain of salt.

You can only do so much about culture when you have a roster which on paper would be favourites for the spoon.

How do you create a winning culture when you've got a team of plodders?

True, but Cleary signed a lot of those plodders. His next round of signings need to be more impressive.

Who else was he supposed to sign? We were a bottom of the table team with little appeal to anyone whatsoever. He recruited a bunch of proven NRL players who would compete, even if not the most talented.

So we have a team that for the most part competes, but sometimes lacks the quality to put sides away. Which given our roster isn't that much of a surprise, even if it is disappointing.

I agree with all that, but the bottom lne is he has to own his signings and their performances. Surely?

He does and has. At various times he's mentioned we're ahead of schedule and that some signings were more stop gap solutions rather than part of the long term plan.

We must stay the course now. As heartbreaking as it has been through the end of the Sheens era to Potter to Taylor…we now have a stable Board, management and momentum with Ivan Cleary. To change things again would pretty much seal a pattern that would become endlessly self fulfilling for the club....probably not finals football this year but good times ahead. Couple of top signings would be proof positive.

Sooo.just waste the cash paying stop gaps…sound plan..

But …..That’s how we roll at West’s Tigers !

Given the choice of playing experienced players who'd at least been there before, or untested rookies or nsw cup players I don't mind that he went the more experienced route. We're not too far off the top 8 which is a great effort all things considered.

That we're disappointed not to be in the 8 given the squad we have is a sign of how well we've done.

We've improved a lot, and while i wouldn't call the season a success it's been a huge improvement on and off the field.

I get what you are saying re the recruitment, but the fact is he is the first coach since Sheens to have a balanced salary cap at his disposel, therefore lives or dies by that. If the last two coaches were held to account for recruitment when they were powerless, obviously Cleary should be held to the sams standard seeing as how he has the full cap at his disposel.
