The shambolic and amateurish way we seem to approach negotiations to sign players is an absolute disgrace. It sends a message to prospective players, their managers, the media and the NRL in general that we have no idea what we're doing and that it's best to avoid WT unless you have no other options. Hopefully Sheens can do something about this.

I'm glad you wrote ' we seem to', because none of us know what is going on in the background. Finucane has the same player manager as Nicho Hynes, so they were always going to have the leverage at the sharks.

There is more at play in this "we make an offer and they say yes or no" world. There are player managers feathering their own nest, facilities, wimpish CEO's, terrible recruiters. To be honest, I think we are building a reputation as no longer being pushovers.

I dont particularly care how its reported by Hooper, Rothfiled, Chammas or anyone else. They are not reporters, they are no better than facebook type rumour spreaders, so I take with a grain of salt anything I hear about recruitment or the internal runnings of the club.

I think that’s probably what is occuring also.
The media and everyone are up in arms about it because it doesn’t suit their narrative. Which is a club looking to rise and willing to bring in whoever and whatever on the players and players managers terms.

All internal reports is that Hartigan was good operator and a shrewd recruiter.

I think what also isn’t being leaked and therefore analysed is our strategy.

We are clearly looking for a team full of value add players. Call it risky signings or what have you but with this approach you win some you lose some.

I’m sure the Tigers had a last minute stab at Finucane as a bit of an each way bet.
Pick up a decent player for a little bit more than over the odds, but he still would of been a good signing for under 700k, providing that the salary cap managers had worked out a way that we could afford it.

The other side was and it had the desired impact, it dragged up the winning clubs bid to ensure that they can’t be effective in the player market in the near future.

The indication was that sharks tacked on the 4th year to meet us at the table. But that was at a lower salary probably about 350-400.
Means the original sharks offer was still about 700k a season. So I’m not surprised we offered the same plus a year.
Finucane it seems ended up turning down 300k in the end which In context doesn’t appear all that bad.

Okay

Who is up next

We have almost 1 million dollars of Packers money to spend. For any normal club, the world would be our oyster. Not to worry, I’m sure we’ll pick up a discard or two over the off season. It’s the only time of the year we sign anyone these days.

Discards..

Like Blake Austin, Kevin Naiqama, Martin Taupau types ?

Isn't always a bad thing....

I can see discards being guys like Zac Lomax, Hudson Young, Joe Tapine, David Klemmer.

Glass isn't always half empty.

You can always find a bargain in a discount bin, but I’d rather brand shop.

That off contract list is looking budget as it gets.

We should be looking at players who are under contract and unhappy (Tapine, Klemmer)

Or players stuck behind current starters.
Or guys wanting fresh starts (Lomax, Cotric)

These brand shop players you speak of exist but they're the ones in special circumstances mentioned.

I wish Maguire and Hartigan would read all these suggestions.

Why ...do they need a laugh ??

They don't need to laugh if they are clowns (more likely highly paid ones). The laughs are on us.

Has any club ever sought salary cap relief on the basis of a reduction to save the embarrassment of not being able to spend it all because no one wants to come"

Hooper said yesterday on MMM that we offered two years with a third year option and only after his manager contacted us before committing to the Sharks deal. So who do you believe? Kent or Hooper or neither.

We officially submitted a 2 year deal AND only formally once we were out of the race for TPJ. We didnt come back in with a revised offer.

Good luck to the sharks - 4 years is a long time.....

What forced the sharks hand to extend it?
Didn’t Kent mention a 2.8 mil contract?
Don’t think we’d pay him 1.4 a season now.

Wouldn’t you just start extensions of some of the key players that are off contract 22 or 23 and front load that into this year?
